@mnutty Don’t believe Romney. He’s just as bad as all the rest of the trump republicans. Fortunately for him, he can read the future somewhat and knows republicans have targets on their backs. @AnnMorris

I would push back against that. His votes for Trump’s impeachment differ from the rest of the subservient #GOP. I don’t think that vote aligns with 100% Trump support

I will push back here. I’m no fan of most of Mitt Romney’s politics. I’m an atheist, so I don’t get the whole praying-on-it thing, I don’t like extraordinary wealth. We can argue about what constitutes extraordinary wealth because Romney’s $300 million is dwarfed by some of the Silicon Valley folks.

All that said, he bucked his party’s line when every other #GOP slavishly fell in behind #Trump during impeachment. For that he deserves more than a nod

@Steveb LOL I had a mind to leave it
@mnutty Normal, well adjusted people know that this is just rhetoric, no matter how vile and awful. However, there are always some people who are not well-balanced and who go out and perform violent acts inspired by this rhetoric, especially in the US which is swamped with guns. It’s legal to talk like this, but it’s morally repugnant.

@OranMagal

I would add a total violation of norms in how a presidential campaign speaks to issues of concern.

Since #Trump, creatures of similar ilk feel empowered to spew vileness unchecked and of course that can trigger the unhinged.

In a leadership role, there is an obligation to speak carefully. #Desantis fails on this and many other levels to be considered a viable candidate for the presidency in #Election2024

@mnutty You’re absolutely right. And norms *do* matter, certainly for leadership positions. Or rather, I should say: they *should* matter, except that so-called “populist” parties are deliberately demolishing norms in reckless pursuit of power at any cost.
@mnutty well it brought me to this article about how he stood by torture or murder at guantanamo bay https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/apr/28/ron-desantis-guantanamo-bay-allegations
Ron DeSantis in Guantánamo: how questions about his past haunt the Florida governor

As a young navy lawyer, the Republican was posted to the notorious prison camp. What he did there – and his role in the investigation of three deaths – remains controversial

The Guardian

@gvelez17

That’s a particularly ugly and disturbing story

@mnutty

Likely simply not there under legal and constitutional constraints.

The charges were very weak on factual bases, and chatter says that it was the best they could do because other avenues didn’t really have legal standing in the first place.

@volkris

I think a court of law will decide that.

We’ll see if #JackSmith can establish the evidence chain beyond a reasonable doubt

@mnutty

Courts will decide, but we will as well.
Just like anything else you are welcome to have your own opinion, and in such a politicized area, everybody naturally will.

In this case a huge factor comes down to weather or not you believe the prosecutor has been able to prove that Trump is a time traveler. Was he able to go back in time from after the election to before? Because if not, the whole case falls apart.
