“An NFT of Jack Dorsey's first tweet bought for $2.9M is now valued at less than 4 dollars.” cc: @web3isgreat
@tchambers @web3isgreat I wonder who bought it… a lot of art gets bought ‘in house’ to establish a high price. Clearly it’s all bollocks.

@tchambers @web3isgreat And of course the JPEG of Jack's first tweet, which is all that the NFT references, was and remains completely free.

Quite how allegedly intelligent (or at least evidently wealthy) people could get conned into paying for that sort of nonsense remains one of the great mysteries of the past few years.

#NFT

@losttourist not really. Remember Theranos…

@RodneyPetersonTalent @losttourist both of which were hyped to an insanely positive degree by @TIME it's worth noting.

Getting positive press coverage from a source like that tends to help fool people. That Time was doing its own NFT grift seems so crazy I had to double check I didn't hallucinated it

Nope they actually did it too

TIMEPieces

TIMEPieces is a new NFT community initiative.

Time
@losttourist @tchambers @web3isgreat Not to mention, it’s the token that is non-fungible. Anyone could take the same screenshot of the tweet and make a new NFT referring to it.
@toriver @losttourist @tchambers @web3isgreat Good new market. Meta-nfts
@rrb @losttourist @tchambers @web3isgreat Maybe make a «best of» collection of classic NFT images…
@rrb @toriver @losttourist @tchambers @web3isgreat an NFT of a screen shot showing the worthlessness of another NFT.
@trekologer @toriver @losttourist @tchambers @web3isgreat nothing is worthless, if you can get someone to pay money for it.
@losttourist @tchambers @web3isgreat Historically, art sales (used loosely) are common for money laundering.

@losttourist @tchambers @web3isgreat it's really not a mystery.

You link financial success with intelligence. You've lived your entire life in a world where you are bombarded every day with factual proof that this is nonsense - that, if anything, the opposite is true. But you're bombarded even LOUDER by propaganda spread by those with financial success saying that they're smarter, harder working, more worthy than you.

It's not true and never has been.

@amoshiashwili @losttourist @tchambers @web3isgreat Exactly this, they were never intelligent to begin with, usually their money comes from some family member who got lucky and scammed it off of someone else. It's also worth noting that they often believe their own propaganda, and wind up convinced that they're geniuses, because they actually believe the myth of the self made man.
@tchambers @web3isgreat Turns out NFT stands for Not For Trading. ;-)
@tchambers @web3isgreat Yet reading it is entirely free
@tchambers @web3isgreat I definitely agree with your sentiment, but "4$" is a misrepresentation of what is shown in that screenshot. When naming a selling price, the highest bid, not the lowest, is clearly what one should take into account.
@tchambers @web3isgreat worth 4 dollars when they realised a couple of million people have it as a screenshot

@tchambers @web3isgreat
maybe the real value was the grift we made along the way

or maybe money laundered

@tchambers @web3isgreat Every NFT auction should have someone like Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant in North By Northwest) sitting in the audience to call out all the bullshit.
@tchambers @web3isgreat and somehow that's still overpriced
@tchambers @web3isgreat 1) There are five offers, four of which are higher. 2) Taking the lowest offer is not how you determine value. 3) Interested in #NFTs? Talk to a professional financial advisor first.

@henry @tchambers @web3isgreat it's true these are just offers.

Original price: $2.9M

  • current high offer: $0.000043M
  • current low offer: $0.000004M

Don't know about you, but my eyes kind of glaze over when 2.9 becomes 0.0000... not really sure that it matters after that many zeroes.

But maybe you see this differently? 🤷‍♂️

@henry

I mean the highest offer being about $50 isn’t much better than $4, that’s still a several order magnitude drop in perceived “value”

@tchambers
@web3isgreat
Wonder which of the following the trade was:
- sucker being conned
- wash traders faking demand
- money laundering
@tchambers @web3isgreat Second worst purchase Musk ever made

@tchambers @web3isgreat

The price is good for a framed print: hard to find a good frame for less than $10.

@tchambers @web3isgreat

The #LongTail on this is gonna lol at this 'Virtual Real Estate Market™ concept 💥 implosion💥 just like they did in the Second Life in the 2000's Virtual Real Estate Market 💥 implosion 💥' once the web server wot $ays 'you own that jpeg' market catches up to the Halt & Catch 🔥 part, init? 🤔

As a funny aside I noticed that this is NOT priced in Bitcoin? 😳

@tchambers @web3isgreat haha love it

Another NTFail

@tchambers @web3isgreat NFTs price is practically self definitive with no link to demand and supply
@tchambers @web3isgreat Thats my understanding of the NFTs

@tchambers @web3isgreat

NFTs are so dumb. It was back then, And it is now too. People shouldn't buy stuff If they don't understand what it is simply because of the hype.

Thanks to NFTs the terms "Crypto" and "block chain" are now generally considered as something negative. While they are actually an amazing feat of Technology. Sadly we probably won't be able to build on it till people forget the negative publicity they've received like 5G did.

@akz @tchambers @web3isgreat are they great tech, though? The comparison with 5G falls flat because 5G is useful

@__ash @tchambers @web3isgreat But they don't solve anything that 4G with Carrier aggregation can't do.

Block chains are and probably the best way to keep history and ledgers that are basically immutable by some random Governments or Malicious groups. Crypto "currencies".... I have mixed feelings about them but they are more solid transactions than the existing currencies. But I don't think it's sustainable unless everyone is educated enough about why it's better.

I feel like it's like those tech that will be looked down for a while and will be active in future once we hit the limits of existing system scalability. Like how Fediverse's distributed system is.

@tchambers @web3isgreat

I'll take two!!
;)

@iuculano @tchambers @web3isgreat
Joe, for that price you could get yourself a shiny new Twitter check mark lol
@jd @tchambers @web3isgreat yeah, lol, but the NFT have a better chance of actually holding on to their value
;)

@tchambers @web3isgreat

Thanks. This was a much needed lol for a lazy Sunday.

@tchambers @web3isgreat

the only purpose of NFTs is to launder money

@tchambers @web3isgreat
Anything above zero means it's still overpriced.
@tchambers @web3isgreat @briankrebs Who could have predicted that tech bro tulip mania would turn out to be a spectacularly bad idea?

@tchambers @web3isgreat

NFT's are just money laundering for sanctioned rogue states and corrupt kleptocrats.

@tchambers @web3isgreat Lol 😆 I love poetic justice ⚖️ the most. Neener neener 🤑🤪
@tchambers Who in their right mind would spend 4 dollars on that!!
@tchambers @web3isgreat
@sennoma
How much for the beard.
Asking for a friend.
