Mastodon is great, the only thing I miss on this app is quote posts. I know they have a bad rap bc of Twitter, but every major social network has this functionality for a reason (Tumblr, LinkedIn, Facebook, IG). As a journalist, I’d love to add commentary and amplify great info, build on ppl’s points, etc. You just can’t do that the same wait with replies! Is there any chance we might get them on here?
@taylorlorenz Those are in the works!
@tchambers
It's wrong to be critical because this is a small team working semi-voluntary on a largely free product, but it would be good to have rough timescales on this and other features. It has been on the roadmap for a while.
@taylorlorenz
@gpollara @tchambers @taylorlorenz has it? My memory is that Eugen was opposed to the idea until only a few months ago..
@naught101 @gpollara @taylorlorenz On the roadmap and Eugen has affirmed it in the works…
@tchambers @gpollara @taylorlorenz yes, sorry, I was only questioning the "for a while" part. I think it's only been on the roadmap for a few months, which is really not very long at all in the dev cycle of a major piece of software with a tiny development team.
@tchambers The only way I would see this as a net positive that would not be abused as sub-tweeting would be if they worked like replies that contained quoted content and the quote always contained the original version. Haven't considered impact of original posts being deleted.
@taylorlorenz
@taylorlorenz Yes, it will happen.

@jab01701mid

Live footage of this development team

@jcutting @jab01701mid that’s not really fair. What’s your point, they’re lazy? Incompetent? This is a tiny team, implementing a protocol/applications that to a very real degree rivals Twitter, which had a magnitude more developers.
@strasseba @jcutting I agree - I really saw this comment in another context, as the Meta/IG ActivityPub team.
You can obviously implement "Quote Tweeting" on your own Mastodon instance if you want to. I really don't need it.
@taylorlorenz Other #Fediverse software has this feature like #Akkoma and #Calckey
Akkoma

@taylorlorenz I think, though I may be wrong, other versions of #Mastodon like glich-soc have it as well.
Akkoma

@terryenglish @taylorlorenz nope, I'm on a server that uses the chuckya fork of glitch and it isn't there

@taylorlorenz
@atomicpoet Taylor, an influencer, would really, really like the ability to quote post.

Do you want to sell her on migrating to #CalcKey ?

@GreenFire Hey @taylorlorenz, come to calckey.social. We have quotes. And you can migrate your Mastodon account here too, keeping your follower number intact. Oh, and we do post imports.

@atomicpoet @taylorlorenz @GreenFire How does search on calckey compare to mastodon? I can't find any docs on that (other than setup instructions for the 3 different backends), and I'm getting an error when I try to search on calckey.social.

I'd really like a good way to search *just* my own posts. On mastodon w/ instances that have set up elasticsearch, there's no way afaict to just search for a string amongst my posts - instead I get a lots of other people's stuff.

@Andres4NY @[email protected] @taylorlorenz @GreenFire I don't have an answer to your question, but I do know that in calckey, I always get an error if I only type the username without a server name in the search box.

@Andres4NY @atomicpoet @taylorlorenz @GreenFire

Justmytoots.com has limited functionality in that realm. The operative word being, of course, limited 🙂

@atomicpoet @taylorlorenz @GreenFire oh, post imports! I didn't know this was a thing
@lffontenelle @taylorlorenz @GreenFire It is indeed a thing on Calckey.
@atomicpoet @taylorlorenz @lffontenelle
Meaning that your feed at CalcKey.Social can include the toots of people you follow on #Mastodon or elsewhere on the Fediverse right?
@GreenFire @taylorlorenz @lffontenelle Specifically, I’m talking about the option to transfer your posts from Mastodon to Calckey. 😊

Right now, Mastodon allows you to export your posts, which is handy. However, it doesn't provide the feature to import posts. On the other hand, Calckey is pretty awesome as it supports both importing and exporting. So you can easily move your content to Calckey and enjoy the best of both worlds!

@atomicpoet @smellsofbikes

Something for you to think about as you contemplate moving off of .social

@atomicpoet @taylorlorenz @lffontenelle @GreenFire

As awesome as this is, the influence mastodon has just by being as big/dominant as it is shouldn't be understated.

If one moves from mastodon to calckey ... all is good. But lets say they're anxious about needing to move back to mastodon in the future? As mastodon provides no post imports, which calckey can't help, they may decide to stay on mastodon, especially somewhere like mastodon.social.

I've seen this reasoning live. It's a problem.

@atomicpoet Does Calkey/Firefish do anything special to keep old conversations linked up, or is it more like backdated reposting of all your old posts?
@atomicpoet @GreenFire @taylorlorenz I actually didn't know that you can migrate from Mastodon into Calckey! Is that a new feature?
Calckey

A fun, new, open way to experience social media

Calckey
@GreenFire @taylorlorenz @atomicpoet it already exists. I’ll quote your post to demo. Click on the 3 dots top right on the post you wish to quote. Self-explanatory from there.
@taylorlorenz Some Mastodon apps have implemented the feature. For example, @IceCubesApp has it, I recently learned.
For anyone not using the app, it will just look like you shared a link to a toot, so it doesn’t break anything.
@superflippy @taylorlorenz @IceCubesApp when you really think about it a quote toot is just a new toot containing a link to the other one. If the link is presented as a preview card, voila quote toot.
@superflippy @taylorlorenz @IceCubesApp you probably want some feedback mechanism to the original tooter and perhaps some built-in controls (turning off the ability to do quote toots for whatever reason) but fundamentally it is just a link presented as a preview card.
@superflippy Same with the web app @elk, which in general looks very much like Twitter. This should be less work then migrating to Calckey, although it is nice over there, as others have pointed out.
@superflippy @taylorlorenz apart from @IceCubesApp , on Android you have @megalodon and @moshidon with a long press on the share button too.
@taylorlorenz I’ve been thinking of trying out an account on a calckey server to try it out, I think they have it? And still part of the fediverse

@Viss @taylorlorenz The soggy cigarette hung from his lips, jumping up and down as he spoke, the needle of a seismograph.

His eyes remained unfocused, lacking the telltale tiny movements humans subconsciously used to judge something as living. He looks like a doll made out of worn leather, she thought as a fly walked across his forehead, apparently without him noticing.

“There’s been…” he trailed off, the cigarette jumping. “Discussions.”

@alex @taylorlorenz ahhaha yeap, thats the measure of it - and i suspect thats the more polite, presentable variant of it, considering to get any 'clarity on why', youd hafta read the github issues and thats like holding your face up to a belt sander for several months.
@Viss @taylorlorenz maybe she can ask a journalist that focuses on technology and social media. They should know…oh
@taylorlorenz I remember you asking about it when you first joined. A few mobile apps allow a quote post, just not the official, nor the default web client.

@taylorlorenz We're about to switch to Hometown for our instance that allows quote tweets.

The biggest issue with Mastodon is that its incredibly white and homogenous. I wouldn't know about anything going on Sudan if it weren't for twitter.

@timnitGebru @taylorlorenz i think that's a side effect of your network. switching to a fork of mastodon won't improve that (though i would still support switching to hometown)
@timnitGebru @taylorlorenz I do wish more journalists and academics from twitter would migrate over here.
@timnitGebru @taylorlorenz I don’t like #mastodon for #Ukraine news and followed global thinkers on #Twitter who enlightened me for years. It’s now part of the far right anti #democratic media revolution. I’m diversifying my sources: podcasts, subscribing to sources I care about etc. don’t miss the #elonmusk crapform at all https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/07/15/elon-musk-twitter-blue-checks-verification-disinformation-propaganda-russia-china-trust-safety/
Elon Musk's Twitter Is Becoming a Sewer of Disinformation

Changes to the platform have systematically amplified authoritarian state propaganda.

@timnitGebru @taylorlorenz hey where do we check ethnicity and demographics information?
@taylorlorenz @MonaApp has client side support for QTs. They might look a little wonky on other clients, though…
@taylorlorenz That's the main thing I miss also.
@taylorlorenz
As others have said, it's on the
Roadmap

Or come over to
Calckey! We have quotes and search :)
Public Roadmap

Learn what we are working on in Mastodon

@breakfastmtn @taylorlorenz Calckey also has a sort of fulltext search called "antennas"! That's another Twitter feature I miss.
@schizanon @taylorlorenz And you can bring all your Mastodon posts with you! 😎
