Today I discovered that not only is July #Disability Pride Month but also that we have a flag. It is so well done and extremely meaningful. It was created by Ann Magill, a disabled writer.

The entire thing will not fit into the thumbnail but if you open the image, it will tell you what each color and flag feature stands for. It is also in the alt text if you are unable to open it.

#disabled #accessibility #cerebralpalsy #adhd #autism #OCD #PTSD #bipolar #depression #invisibleillness (& more!)

Even more, there was so much thought put into this that the stripes were even made in such a way that they would not trigger any sort of migraine or seizures for people. They are also set up in a way where they have different luminosity so that people with color blindness can more easily discern the different colors!

A very kind commenter mentioned that it would be nice if people could know the hex codes and RGB coordinates in order to replicate the colors perfectly. I had not even considered this, so I went looking and found the codes. If you'd like to replicate the colors for art or design, here they are! (This link has a lot of other info about the flag too).

I would also like to add that "sensory disorders" is not expanded on much in this chart, but it also includes people with migraines, seizures, and other neurological disorders including but not limited to ones related to pain & visual and/or audio distortions. People with migraines & seizures were consulted whenever the flag was changed in 2021, so that it could be easier on the eyes when scrolling.

Just wanted to add that since many neurological disorders don't fall under "psychiatric"

@skeletonpup I had no idea. Now to get businesses to put it every where
@skeletonpup
That is genuinely a cool flag, and I also enjoy the ZX Spectrum vibes of it.
@skeletonpup oh, yellow IS my colour.
@whangdoodler @skeletonpup it’s even more than this. My wife and I are both in this picture at least twice each.

@gewalker @whangdoodler It's awesome and so inclusive, I absolutely love it. You can tell that Ann put a lot of thought and love into this. This is an updated version that is less bright and was made in coordination with people who suffer from seizures, and also made it to where it can be viewed by people with color blindness. So awesome!

@skeletonpup @whangdoodler I’m going to share it with the disability and neurodiversity communities at my work. Thanks for passing on good stuff.
@skeletonpup @whangdoodler inclusive engineering is the difference between civilization and, not sure. Justice by the firm of Solitary, Poor, Nasty, Brutish, and Short?
@skeletonpup I love this so much! πŸ˜€ Thank you!!
@skeletonpup wish they'd include color codes in things like this. when so much care is taken to choose colors, would be nice if they can be actually reproduced.

@tarajdactyl I didn't even consider that, thank you for bringing this up. I went looking and I actually found a link to a site that has them! I know it's not the same that it wasn't on the original graphic (which is not mine but was sent by a friend) but I'm glad they do exist out there! I added this as a comment to the original post.

@skeletonpup wonderful! i could totally see someone otherwise just picking black black (000000) and bright versions of every color which is against the spirit of the flag. thank you for sharing!
@skeletonpup I didn’t know there was a flag either!
@skeletonpup I didn't even know we had a flag, but now I do and thanks to your in-depth image description I know what it looks like and what it means as well. Thank you very much :-)
I love the initiative, but I don’t feel pride for my disability, I accept it.
Maybe disability awareness month would be a better name…
@skeletonpup I'm so happy seeing that Ann's flag design is getting traction - I've been seeing it pop up all around the place!
@skeletonpup Im disabled and sure as hell am not proud of it
@Goldenfeathers And that's ok, everyone has a different disability experience. For me personally, I am proud to identify myself as disabled bc it's not something that I want to be ashamed of anymore. I felt a lot of guilt for things that are out of my control, but I don't want to deal with it in secret like it is something I should feel bad about. My brain is the way it is and I can't change that. Disability pride is about accepting yourself for who you are but it's a personal journey & decision
@Goldenfeathers I'm not sure if you've heard of the social model of disability but it's about viewing yourself as someone in a broken world that doesn't help to accommodate us instead of viewing yourself as broken in a correct world. I follow that viewpoint, which is why I choose to celebrate my neurological differences instead of feeling shame. But again, it's a personal choice and you can of course feel how you want to 😊
@skeletonpup
Thank you for sharing this - I didn't know
@skeletonpup the color composition is just so beautiful
@skeletonpup and happy to find out that i have my color too (with depress), it’s light blue, i like this one!
@skeletonpup I had no idea about this either. Makes me feel included and all warm inside.
@skeletonpup omfg finally a flag that isn't horizontal stripes
@skeletonpup @Aubrie you'll find this interesting

"Discovery (Part 2 of 2)

There was Betty, one of a few Down's children, whose soul purpose in life was to make small gifts for everyone every morning, and spend the rest of the day making sure everyone was happy. And Lawrence, who was so incredibly funny that every third sentence out of his mouth would leave all of us drowning in laughter. And many other wonderful individuals who would require too much space to describe here.

And yet none of them could read or write or perform most any of the tasks we typically value.

That's when I discovered that the intellect I'd previously believed made us human was in fact the least valuable part of us.

And compassion the most."

"Discovery (Part 1 of 2)

When I was 15 years old I did something wrong in high school and my punishment was to spend one week as a teachers aide in the intellectually disabled class, which at that time was known by the old derogatory name of retarded class.

I remember being so embarrassed, and dreading the start of my sentence, but within minutes of entering the class I began a learning experience that would alter my life.

To make a long story short, though the children lived with a range of disabilities, including Down's, I soon discovered they were some of the most endearing and precious human beings I'd ever encountered."
SearingTruth

@skeletonpup oh what! For some reason I had assumed it only included physical disabilities. To be included on 2 more aspects (neurodivergencies and mental illnesses) is a really good feeling
@skeletonpup Cool, I’m as yellow as a minion

@skeletonpup The new one is objectively better for the disabled community...

but the old one still looks metal, I'd wear it on a tshirt
(bright color warning)
