Hey Nerds and Geeks of the Fediverse:

I'm bailing on Evernote. I have an Obsidian license, but it's got a bit of a learning curve.

Where do you store your notes/clipped recipes/random shit/brain? Leave comments if you have other things, or particular reasons?

@justanna I use my phone and iPads for work and personal life, so we use a variety of systems:

Paprika is excellent for recipes. It helps with the doubling of recipes easily and shares well between @Vidyala and me.

Personal notes: Iโ€™m slowly changing from Notability to Apple Notes. I use the Apple Pencil on tablets all the time (helps me recall more easily than typing).

Work: my work iPad has apple notes. Most co-workers use one note but the pen integration sucks with it.

Stacey is analog.

@justanna
On my PC I use Nextcloud notes.
On my Android I still use Google Keep sadly.

@justanna My notes are in unsaved Notepad++ files... which I only ever save if I ever need to reinstall Windows or access it on Linux.

Yes, I know, it is heresy and the worst system ever. I keep meaning to actually learn Obsidian but other things keep getting priority...

@rakuno @justanna You should really slap a content warning on this, because OMG. Horrifying!

Edit: It's the word unsaved that turns this from quirky to psychotic.

@Krikket @justanna My bad. I will try to remember it in the future as to not accidentally cause trauma to others!

EDIT: Well, Notepad++ keep the notes as long as I don't close the tabs... And if I save and close the tab I WILL forget the notes. You have no idea how often I find a random text file on my HD I completely forgot about...

EDIT 2: I should also add that those for notes I don't really care about keeping around. If I *really* need to keep them around then I will save.

@rakuno @Krikket @justanna Iโ€™m up to about 250 unsaved tabs in notepad++ on my work computer. What are you at?

@bearmine @Krikket @justanna I am not alone!

Right now I am at about 3. Best I ever got were about 11. I know, it doesn't even compare.

Now, if we were talking about opened tabs... I'd rather not share. That is a really embarrassing number.

And yes, I know of bookmarks. I even use them. Some times. ๐Ÿ˜†

@rakuno @Krikket @justanna I tend to open up notepad++ tabs for scratch sheets while coding. So itโ€™s a smattering of code snippets or temp Python scripts mostly. Sometimes data like csv or json dumps.

Edit: oh and I never close tabs. ๐Ÿ‘€ so they just build up over the months.

@justanna I like apple notes personally for just quick notes but I'm slowly starting to move everything out of the Apple ecosystem. I use obsidian on my computer - I think I might switch to Nextcloud Notes for my phone or maybe Obsidian as well

@justanna I have bits and pieces from a lot of different systems lying all over the place at this point because for digital notes, at least, the solution I consistently return to is 'a folder full of text files in a Dropbox.'

I also take a lot of notes on paper, especially when away from a computer; I have a Traveler's Company notebook that I love a lot for this purpose.

@justanna I keep them in obsidian, I try to use Hashtags so that I can find them later by tag.
@justanna I use goodnotes on my iPad. What I like most is that I can set up different notebooks for different subjects.
@justanna i use apple notes like some kind of savage

@justanna I use possibly the worst possible option... which is a bajillion individual Google docs and then search for whatever I happen to be looking for.

I use Trello for the podcast for keeping track of show topics, but it's been progressively less enjoyable since Atlassian bought it out.

@belghast Yeah - I've noticed that about Trello lately. I use ToDoist for tasks, but it's really just for to do lists, and doesn't do major organization particularly well. For what I need it to do, I love it though, esp as Husbot and I can share lists.

I have a MASSIVE and very well organized Google Drive, but I hadn't thought of trying to use it for notes - doesn't seem optimal for saving links and stuff? How do you manage that?

@justanna I don't often save links, and the things that I use regularly I just have the URLs memorized.

For some stuff... I use my blog as external storage for links I care about. The Game Tools section on my blog for example is just a place for me to share links to things I will want again when I am playing that game.

For shared lists the spouse and I use Google Keep.

Diablo IV Tools - Tales of the Aggronaut

The idea behind the game tools section of Tales of the Aggronaut is to have a simple way of compiling links and resources that are personally useful to me. At some point, I completely stopped using bookmarks, and as a result, I tend to just type in the sites that I am trying to reach. ... Read more

Tales of the Aggronaut
@justanna for anything work-related I use o365 tools

@justanna

My main note taking is work related and use OneNote for that.

For personal, it's in Keep.

@justanna I save things by tossing them into a pair of overflowing bookmark folders. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
@justanna I use obsidian and obsidian.el in Emacs (I'm the author). org-mode is great, but it will not outlive Obsidian since obsidian is just markdown :)
@justanna I use Notion, although from what little I know of obsidian, it's not 100% comparable. it's super easy for little notes and like, lists and stuff, but it's pretty easy to fall down a rabbit hole. (^_^)
@justanna I usually use notion for everything!
@justanna highly recommend org-mode - steep learning curve but it's the end game for notes and organisation tools.
@justanna I email them to myself in GMail, and have a folder set up for anything "from: my@email" and "to: my@email"
@justanna I dump everything in Obsidian. I have used Evernote (and Orgmode) for years, but Obsidian is easiest. It is possible to amazing things with Obsidian, but you donโ€™t have to, you can just start simple. Then slowly over time, add more functionality.
@justanna #Emacs #OrgMode FTW. #OrgRoam is nice as well.

@nickanderson

I use #emacs #orgroam on the laptop and import to that from #orgzly on android. It's not seemless, but functional.

@justanna

@justanna I would highly recommend Notion.

@justanna
I was struggling with Obsidian (but I didn't give up yet) so I decided to try something else.

@joplinapp is what you're looking for. It is open source and it works great. I have also connected one of my cloud services through WebDAV, so you can synchronize your notes.

I hope it helps! โœŒ๏ธ

@justanna
I really like Notion :)
@rinitealeaf @justanna Yup, am with Rini. I use Notion for TTRPG notes, Grimoire notes, Animal Crossing/FFXIV tracking stuff, book tracking things. For brain stuff I just dump it on Discord somewhere or my phone's memo app.

@justanna
There's so many possibilities. Probably depends on if you want to keep your notes in the cloud vs. offline for privacy.

I keep my stuff offline. For that, I use org-mode for most things, but it also has quite a learning curve.

I also use ZimWiki [1] and CherryTree [2] for some things. They have much easier learning curves but of course have their own +'s and -'s. All these are FLOSS.

Zim - a desktop wiki

Zim is a notepad like desktop application that is inspired by the way people use wikis.

@justanna In the past Iโ€™ve used Turtl (https://turtlapp.com/) and been pleased with it especially as an Evernote alternative. Personally I use org-roam but wouldnโ€™t recommend it to someone who doesnโ€™t already use emacs. Obsidian Iโ€™ve heard a lot of good things about #turtl #emacs
Turtl: The secure, collaborative notebook | Turtl

The safe way to remember everything. Take all your important data with you.

@justanna I'm using #emacs but I would like to try out #logseq in the future.
@Sydymar @justanna i too use Emacs and org-mode for notes. Whatever you choose, make sure it is an open format I would say.
@justanna logseq here. I came for its simple concepts. Daily journal, links and back links. It syncs up fine with syncthjng across mobile and desktop. I'm starting to use the search and queries more. It's also standalone so it's a separate app from other tasks.
@justanna Bear for iPad and iPhone
@justanna I use Apple notes and evaluate whether itโ€™s useful before storing in Obsidian vault

@justanna I haven't used Evernote. What did you like about it, and why are you bailing on it?

I think Obsidian has a lot going for it, especially the possibility for user-created plugins, and also some real red flags (requiring a license being the biggest), but I think the #1 criterion for any PKM is that it must use plaintext/a simple markup language (which Obsidian and several others do). Like @nickanderson and @dekkzz76, I like Org-Roam, but that is because I'm already an Emacs nerd.

@blake @justanna @dekkzz76 well, orgmode is just so flexible and there are so many tools. Orgrr, denote, zettledeft, Deft, orgbrain and more. I've not tried obsidian but if I hadn't discovered all the other emacs magic I could see myself using logseq.
