Threads is Instagram. Instagram is Facebook. Facebook is Meta. Meta is Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook was complicit in a literal genocide.

Meta is a surveillance capitalist that exploits you for profit.

Mark Zuckerberg straight up called you “dumb fucks” for trusting him.

What’s it going to take for you to not help these assholes continue to fuck people over?

@aral it’s insane how much traffic they’ve already gotten given their history.

But, it’s easy to convince people to sign up when so many other people you know will sign up.

@niceglutes @aral

This right here. People will “follow” other people. I was just saying to people in RL about how I wish it was easier for folks to understand the Fediverse. “Things” I want to follow won’t come here. And yes, I know we don’t want some people and some things, but we can block them and/or their instances. So I would rather see more come here than not.

Anyways, I wish people could see the same that most on here already know.

@bennysp @niceglutes @aral

It’s also the fact that the people joining Threads are (mostly) folks already on some part of the Meta platform.

Saying Meta is awful for privacy and ethically isn’t compelling to folks who’ve already given their privacy away and are overlooking ethical issues.

@bennysp @aral @DBHorbert exactly! They’re already in that ecosystem so it’s not a hard sell.

Even new people are likely coming from Twitter, so they’re used to big tech

@DBHorbert @niceglutes @aral yep. I mean, I will shamefully admit that I am there (I was there many years before I really understood this issue). But you are right. They (I) sold to the devil so what’s a little bit more.

Well for me, I am hoping to learn and nothing more. I want to remain here on the true Fediverse.

Rohingya sue Facebook for $150bn over Myanmar hate speech

The social media giant is accused of fuelling violence against the persecuted minority in Myanmar.

BBC News
@aral Agreed, but posting this on this platform is like preaching to the choir.
@aral let's not forget his first version of Facebook was stealing images of women from college websites to be objectified, which he described as "a prank" https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/yes-mark-zuckerberg-did-create-181700059.html

@kc When the Zucc is is trying to act human he's even more creepy. @aral
@kc hahahah this thing of a person tried to rate anyone's appearance it's embarrassing
@aral I just wanna see some funny memes while I wait for code to compile
@aral I'm thinking separate out the community/town/city to Mastodon instances run by the local government (could even be libraries) then federate/gateway in "entertainment" which is what Twitter, etc. is?....if you want the "entertainment" channel, then there is an app for that..Twitter, Threads, whatever...
@aral Zuck the Fuck! Not sure why so many people don't realize or don't remember HE is responsible for election lies , misinformation and January 6! WTF people?!?!

@aral

What’s it going to take for you to not help these assholes [Facebook, Instagram, Meta, by extension, #Twitter.] continue to fuck people over?

Me? I abandoned those media a few years ago. I paid attention, and likely so did everyone reading this post.

Others: Foster awareness. If you're a #writer, get the real information into an article or #novel or #screenplay. If you are a #photographer, take a satirical #photo and post it on-platform and elsewhere. If you are a #videographer... an #artist... Until people who don't pay attention like we do get jolted, they won't switch (†).

Those that get what they want from it: Nothing so long as they get what they want. Figure a way to make it so they don't get what they want.

====
(†) Keep in mind that a #FB, Twit, #Insta, etc. alternative may seem so difficult to set up, like #Mastodon is for many mundanes. If they can't grok it they won't switch. In which case, write better SIMPLE bootstraps for mundanes.

@sfwrtr @aral
To build safer societies, we need to get people out of corporate silos, regain control of Comms, have more public not corporate interest journalism.
@ArtBear @aral Agreed. Propose how to do it.
@sfwrtr @aral
Well I wrote a few ideas down about some ways to do it, a while ago, here.

Attached: 1 image People focus on niceness of Fediverse. It's great but not the most beneficial quality in my view. It's the capacity here for people to properly consider information coming from others they disagree with. Fediverse has best success rate at following this tenet of any larger social network / online community I've seen. It's pretty awesome actually. Optimistic for #2023 #Fediverse #Mastodon Better communication leads to better society, less extremism, better politics & more effective solutions.

@aral
Alternatives.

@Okanogen You literally wrote that on an alternative :)

(And there are others folks are working on, including myself.)

@aral those places are still better than snowflakes in this platform.
@aral People I know and whom I interact with are on Facebook. Mastodon can't make the same claim. Heck, it's uncertain I can even invite people over here barring server quotas. Then, there are folks using handles like it's 90's and 00's. Zuck is incredibly capitalistic yet there is no issue with joining and people are worst case pretending to be someone else. Plus, Mastodon is clunky as heck. Which is why people will give Threads a serious go and give Mastodon a pass. It's a pass for me though
@mceplina @aral oh you forgot the incredible privacy Threads affords….
@jillholl @aral Threads is a Twitter variant. I have no illusions of privacy like I have no illusions of privacy on Facebook. Unlike Mastodon, Facebook/Messenger does have encrypted DMs.
@aral network effect is helluva drug. we have to play lesser of two evils for now
@aral I was just thing about this today. Not in those words…
@aral

Maybe easy, Zuck is right and most people are dumb?
@aral
I exited FB after the 2016 election for exactly those reasons. No regrets.

@aral

Some people genuinely like to be fucked over....it gives them something to 'legitimately' whine about as they have nothing better to do.

I can't think of any other (sane) explanation.

edit: Added CW.

@aral love how you have consistently been talking about this stuff for a decade (or two, most likely .. I’ve been following you ever since FOTB in Brighton) 😁 keep up the good work!

@bjornbjorn Thanks, Bjørn. And hopefully doing more than just talking about it. Fingers crossed what I’ve been working on will start becoming more visible this year as some of the higher-level pieces start getting released :)

What is the Small Web?

Updated June 19th, 2023 Sorry, your browser doesn't support embedded videos. But that doesn’t mean you can’t watch it! You can download Small Is Beautiful #23 directly, and watch it with your favourite video player. Small Is Beautiful (Oct, 2022): What is the Small Web and why do we need it? Today, I want to introduce you to a concept – and a vision for the future of our species in the digital and networked age – that I’ve spoken about for a while but never specifically written about:

Aral Balkan
@bjornbjorn PS. Just one decade. Two decades ago I was mostly clueless about it all. (Privilege is a helluva drug.) :)
@aral yeah sorry I didn’t mean to imply that it was all talk 😅 you’ve surely been hard at work over the years as well 😎 hadn’t seen this latest project before today, so checking it out now 👍
@bjornbjorn Haha, not at all :) But glad the link was useful :)
@aral
I'm trying to make this sound non-combative, but can't think how, so I'll be blunt (but please don't read any malice in it, it's a genuine question):
How were Meta involved in a genocide?
Let Me DuckDuckGo That For You - LMDDGTFY

@aral
Omg, I never even *heard* about this! How terrible! Thank you for educating me.
@aral It’s happening because it is easier to use. Mastodon is great but it took me awhile to figure it out. It was a very bumpy start signing up and using the app. I do lack tech skills, so yeah. So people are going from one greedy millionaire to another.

@aral

What's the best way to avoid helping them?

Because I want (and need) the bigger network but I don't want to hand my data to Zuckerberg,

So I need at least some instances to federate to protect my data.

Full support for the instances that defederate too. I hope they survive being flooded with angry posts demanding that the fediverse become a monolith.

@aral Soooo Threads is Zuckerberg? Thanks for letting me know. I won't be creating an account!
@aral some people apparently believe the wealthy have some sort of divine right to screw people. I truly don’t understand the mindset.
@aral Good question, espechally since I never trusted #NSAbook to begin with and outcalled them as #Stasi 4.0 even before #AllGafamsAreBad / #AllGafamsAreEvil was evidenced - again - by #PRISM...
@aral Meta allowed Instagram users to use Threads as well. If a Gmail user starts to use Google drive, is that a new Google Drive user? So is Meta really attracting new users to Threads? I would think that mostly existing Meta users tried out Threads.
@duco Trillion-dollar surveillance capitalists don’t need free advocates, Duco, they have enough paid ones.
@aral true, but I haven't seen an advocate answering your posts, so why are you mentioning that? 🤔

@duco You made one possible case in your post, which, if accepted at face value (not that I believe it would be given that it is a separate product – if it wasn’t why would it need to have a separate name/have different features/exist separately to Instagram?), could enable Meta to sidestep the antitrust regulation (“it’s not a different product so we are not using our monopoly position anticompetitively”).

My point was that that’s the sort of argument an advocate would make.

@aral what? I have not written anything like that. 🤔 Gmail and Google Drive are different products. But if you are customer of one it's easy to use the other one as well. So my argument was, that Threads is overhyped. The media celebrates them, that they gained 10 Millionen new users in short time, but in reality, that are existing users. It's easy to switch, so they have taken a look, nothing more. Also doesn't mean they will keep using that product.

@aral

The ability to get Meta's data without giving them any of mine, by being able to follow people on Threads without being on Threads.
