If a little voice ever says to you “what if you stopped being artificially polite and just told people on social media what you think, and mirroring their attitude and tone back to them, for a day?” you should drink until the voice goes away.

@Popehat

This.... 100x this.....

@Popehat Don't feed the trolls
@grwster @Popehat It is kinda way too late for that, and to be fair it isn't so much as "feeding" trolls as it is holding up a mirror and watching them react.
@ChuckMcManis @Popehat dunno, I think provoking any reaction / taking up any space in your head is a win for a troll
@Popehat I've been trying to figure out if I could get an program to do what you did over there as a way of segregating users. It has been hilarious to watch but I know it isn't easy on you.

@Popehat

Well I should hope we'd get on splendidly. 😀

@Popehat
Just in case anyone can learn from my experience, I tried this in 2015 and it was not fun or helpful at all. I just met more abuse.

Blocking the source without engaging them works better for many reasons.

@Popehat Thinking something stronger, off to consult the ghost of HST
@Popehat this is not going to solve my drinking problem, ken

@Popehat

Don't feed the internal troll voices

@Popehat
That little voice stayed on Twitter where it belongs. Not engaging in the negativity has been cathartic.
@Popehat the more I drink the more likely I am to listen to that little voice

@Popehat That's why I'm banned from Twitter.

Magas don't like to be called whiny crybaby cowards who rat out their buddies like meth cooks. Who knew?

@Popehat

Me:

- Join Bluesky
- "Things look OK"
- "Hey, there's Popehat".
- "Follow Popehat"
- 😨

@Popehat never been unduly afflicted with being artificially polite, although am selective over whether I respond.

have only ever once changed my opinion as a result of something possibly someone has posted.

Trying to get someone to behave/think differently is usually a waste of time and all you are doing is confirming your own bias.

I like my bisses and no-one is going to talk me out of them.

@Daily_Twerk @Popehat i know it's just a typo but I find 'I like my bisses' charming and could see it on a needlepoint sampler.
@Popehat If I drink enough to make that voice "go away", it's because it's become my outside voice.
@Popehat I like being excessively nice to rude people. It really annoys them. Works very well in the real world too.
@fabricatus @Popehat wishing them peace and recovery from the traumas that made them Like That is reliably infuriating, all the more if you can be completely sincere about it
@Popehat I have a chorus: I go with what the majority says. 😛
@Popehat my bluesky is still pretty underpopulated so you gave me something to do.
@Popehat no voices here, just the clown college song.

@Popehat How's your liver doing today, sir?
@Popehat sounds like a recipe for a world full of Alcoholics and Fascists.. which matches what I see
@Popehat That takes too much energy... and I reserve my energy for people that deserve it.

@Popehat

You did a wonderful job of surfacing the eminently blockable. If you could do that once a month or so it’d be great. ;-)

@Popehat But that is the algorithm though... 👀
@Popehat but if I drink that much the voice just starts shouting louder and I end up agreeing.
@Popehat so uh... is it safe to un-mute you on bsky now? It seemed to be the only way to keep... all of that from consuming my timeline.
@memory The other way is to change the setting so you don’t see all replies from everyone.
@Popehat fair cop— I’d been leaving that on because I was new and it seemed like a good way to find people. Until, suddenly, it was was the opposite. 🤣
@Popehat Applicable to meat space as well.
@Popehat This is why I have an anon account.
@Popehat Drinking make the voices louder and more cutting......
@Popehat it was a perfect blend of irritating and entertaining, the irritation mostly due to the persistent bad-faith reading necessary to construct the version of you people were yelling at.
@Popehat Social Media is the place I go to so I don't have to be artificially polite for a minute. What are you talking about?
@Popehat why? it's the golden rule to treat ppl how they treat you, and you can be creatively honest, which is good for the soul. ignorant arrogant liberal and conservative kanadians get what they give 🤷🏾‍♀️
@Popehat Thing is... it's drinking that makes that little voice pipe up for me.
@Popehat you crazy or troll? people will drink thinking you're right and then they'll start talking. Or otherwise you're crazy coz you self-censor. Hay, I just follow your advices. Which one? Guess.
@Popehat being “artificially ” polite is called manners. It’s also a form of respect. If we all went around expressing what we truly think, I believe we would regret it: as time goes by our opinions do change
@Popehat You'll enjoy the drinking more too if you just stay off social media while you recover 😉
@Popehat when people stop being polite...and start getting real...
@Popehat Rude misinformed people are backed up by a Malthusian plague of idiots.
@Popehat So how many shots for openly mocking trolls in an effort to distract them from bothering anyone else?
@Popehat I get ill from it. Those people aren't well and though I enjoy making MAGA angry, rolling with the pigs makes you dirty and the pigs enjoy it.
@Popehat if you had shared this on multiple other platforms, I would’ve perhaps been saved multiple months of bans, on said other platforms.

@Popehat

My only thought is to replace the drink with smoke a bowl. Repeat as needed.

@Popehat I heard a lot of people say that the problem with assholes on the internet would go away if they were no longer anonymous. Facebook and Twitter proved that that notion was very, very wrong.
@Popehat that voice has long since left me.
@Popehat I needed to hear that, thanks.
@Popehat I am not sure my liver could take what would be required to still that voice.

@Popehat Wait, I was supposed to be drinking this whole time?

Man, that's gonna make social media use at work awkward...
