I seem to recall similar trends back in 2008, but that was when dominance was much more up for grabs.
At least then it was trying to offer alternative features. Now that all networks have basically all the features, there's not much to differentiate the offering from all the rest.

jmht@mmasnick That is/was inevitable. For however bad Twitter and Facebook became trying to figure out how to pay for themselves, a significant value they presented was that "everyone was there" (until they weren't). As the playing field fractures, this value is lost, or at least eroded.
