Looking for feedback from pdx.social users about allowing federation with Meta's new threads platform. My main concern is that data from our server that makes it's way into threads will then become part of Meta's data collection.

The fact that they can't launch in the EU because it would prevent them from mixing their data sources for advertising is telling.

Please boost 🌲

@foozmeat I vote not federating with them due to privacy concerns. Thanks for all you do!
@foozmeat need more info on specifically how to defederate Threads... I want nothing to do with it.
@foozmeat Yeah, as much as I don't like Meta, I wanted to give their users a chance... but those app permissions looked scary and you make a good point about the EU. So, I vote 'no' unless they can do something to show they can be trusted. If EU allows them, that might be a step toward consideration.
@foozmeat @scuttlefield there’s no guarantee that if they meet EU privacy law that will apply to their US operations.

@foozmeat I can't think of any reason to give facebook anything for free.

I've had all facebook domains blocked for many years and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.

@foozmeat @edox Seems like any public posts are fair game for data collection by anyone - including Meta - regardless of federation, no? They could go scrape all your public posts right now without ever launching Threads.
@techphotoguy As of this weekend pdx.social has AUTHORIZED FETCH enabled so scraping becomes more cumbersome.
@foozmeat @techphotoguy
What does that mean? I've only seen Mastodon from the user side.

@foozmeat I won’t miss them if we don’t federate and I appreciate you checking in.
@foozmeat Staunchly against federating with them. Very heartening to see this is the common opinion, too!
I'm all aboard the "Meta can go kick rocks" train!
@foozmeat I'm not on pdx.social, apologies, but just to chime in, I don't think a platform like Meta or that of any other for-profit co could ever be able to be aligned with Mastodon. It feels like they just want to get their "tentacles" on users they are losing...

@foozmeat Fwiw, the EU thing might not be true: https://social.vivaldi.net/@justinionn/110659636319486102

It was also mentioned that Facebook will just scrape what they’d want anyway, regardless of federation. That’s probably true too.

I’m OK to wait and see, but I’m interested to see what a lot of new users (people I actually know IRL for example) do with the Fediverse.

I don’t think FB is going to give much of a choice here. They don’t even mention Fedi in Threads descriptions. They might just connect to the big instances.

The Irish DPC later clarified that this isn't strictly true. This clarification isn't being as widely shared. https://www.businesspost.ie/tech/data-protection-commission-we-are-not-blocking-instagrams-threads/ #Threads #Meta #TwitterMigration #Ireland #EU

@gogobonobo Servers can make scraping harder by enabling "Authorized Fetch". I'm sure Meta will work around it but it makes scraping by regular bots more difficult.
@foozmeat not a fan of anything Meta 👎🏻
@foozmeat I'm not on pdx.social, but as a Portlander, it's nice to both see that you're taking feedback from those on the instance and that the replies so far seem to err on the side of not federating with Meta
@foozmeat I’m against federating with threads. Seems like a meta just wants to fill the Twitter sized gap in machine learning data.
@foozmeat i vote no. thank you for asking for feedback first, regardless of what happens!
@foozmeat I wouldn't mind our federating with Threads. There's some accounts over there that I'd like to follow, and doing that from here seems more privacy-conscious than running Meta's app on my phone.

@foozmeat After reading the latest blog post from Mastodon on the subject I change my mind to being in favor of federation with Threads on the basis that Mastodon is built to limit cross-instance privacy issues.

What to know about Threads

There’s been a lot of speculation around what Threads will be and what it means for Mastodon. We’ve put together some of the most common questions and our responses based on what was launched today.

Ooo, that's interesting. I've been reconsidering myself. I'm not sure the privacy concerns are more of an issue whether we federate or not. And individual users can block the whole instance should they choose. I want to encourage Fediverse participation, if we can do it safely.

@foozmeat

Please don't federate with Threads. I want no part of that.

@foozmeat No, do not federate with Meta in any form whatsoever.

@foozmeat
I vote against federating with Threads.

🔸Privacy concerns.

🔸Threads is already being real welcoming to hateful people. There are at least a handful of trans people among those who I've been talking to, and I would really prefer not to inadvertantly lead hate to them.

🔸I already don't have an Instagram account, and deleted my Facebook account a while back. I don't need them keeping tabs on me again.

@foozmeat DO NOT federate with Meta. Please.
@foozmeat I lean towards not federating with them, but since its not their platform their ability to gather data is limited by the platform. Additionally, if they really wanted to, they could scrape all the same data since its all public anyway.
