I'm on the data job market, and I want to hear about your jobs, especially the weird and interesting ones!
I have been working in Product Analytics as a Data Scientist/Analyst with some light modeling the last few years. I have a PhD in Applied Math and can lean more into math - or I could lean the SQL direction for an Analytics Engineer role.
20+ years exp including being the only data person at small companies

I am an ex-@fastmail employee and current subscriber. Like many of you, I am concerned about the recent lay-offs (https://union.place/@fastmailunited/112672408714595554), and I'm trying hard to not fall into a trap of just believing #Fastmail's statement (https://indieweb.social/@chadkoh/112677853479447745) without critical examination (even though finding an alternative mail provider with feature parity would *suck*).
However:
- When I was made redundant in 2017, my access to internal systems was revoked during the exit meeting with my manager. Which makes sense for a tech company concerned a disgruntled (ex-)employee may tamper with company systems.
- Not even in the post from @fastmailunited does it say "we were laid off because for union-related reasons". It says "we were able to negotiate for a much better severance package than [โฆ] had we not unionized", and they are "going to continue working to get a contract", and they "now have a bunch of smart, kind, and talented folks who are looking for work!"
So I guess what I'm saying is, while it *is* prudent to think critically about this situation and it's your prerogative to vote with your wallet, I'd caution against jumping to conclusions like "Fastmail is now a union buster," based on the little information that has come out from any of the outgoing staff members.
Hello everyone! We have some unfortunate news. @[email protected] has made the decision to lay off 60% of our bargaining unit, including our bargaining committee, in a surprise restructure while we were in the middle of contract negotiations. Fortunately, we were able to negotiate for a much better severance package than we would have gotten had we not unionized when we did. We are grateful for the work that the Communication Workers of America put in on our behalf to get us the best deal they could.
Please read this thread. I'm too tired and pissed to make coherent arguments, but this is the argument I'd make if I had the energy.
So if you're a PSF member: please (a) affirm your intent to vote by June 25th and (b) vote for these bylaw changes.
