@DazzlingDamo yeah there was definitely a fifties era of using design tips from US cars with the Euros.
@vwdasher it one of those things that I sort of associate with Ford, maybe Vauhall /Opel but expect it not to have influenced German manufacturers. 🤷‍♂️
Given there were a lot of Americans in Germany at the time it really shouldn't be a surprise.

@vwdasher It was pretty knackered and @kadams1970 had something more suited to my needs at the time. It’s since been sold a couple of times and finally chopped into pieces for body sections.

Watched them scream to victory in the RAC rally around 1983. Very impressive flying through the Welsh forests in the early hours.

Yes, and spectators. It was unnerving not knowing if we were walking on a 6 ft wide footpath through the forest or along the stage itself ... not until a car swept by.

@RobertJackson58585858 yeah a friend rallies and they're far more tightly run nowadays. Specific spectactor spots well back from the madness, it's a bloody dangerous sport.

On another occasion in the Welsh forests we were treated to cars crawling by because idiots were standing on the stage. Some with flash cameras. So sad. Complete waste of a trip.

@RobertJackson58585858 yeah it's much safer now, because of those idiots. And deaths of idiots. Quite horrifying to watch video of those days, people were all over the course. Insanity.

@vwdasher I only recently learned that the sport quarto is built by sicing together sectioned bodies from two different cars. From the rear bumper to the b-pillar it is an 80 coupe and from b pillar forward is a Quattro.

With only 220~ factory examples built, it is much easier to fabricate one in this manner than it is to buy an original one. There are a couple companies that specialize in building them from scratch now.
