I just read another news article about why mastodon didnโ€™t make it and is dying. Itโ€™s very sad to hear and probably explains why I have to keep adding more server capacity to handle all the people quitting mastodon.
Quitting is computationally expensive.
@jerry The Fediverse's exit gate is controlled by Maxwell's Demon.

@Creideiki @jerry

If only there was a Moore with a Law or something equivalent to cite for this new fangled, since 2016, #web3 #ActivityPub Schroeder Type Cat of the #OpenWeb.

Something about the doubling of... or is it Alive or Dead or something?

Gosh, this just eludes me as to why this could be important! #SendPost ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ“จ

@jerry Case in point, June 12th on Reddit.
@jerry kill -9 is essentially free. ๐Ÿ‘น
@jerry I feel like they should stick this on cigarette packs.
@jerry itโ€™s called reverse engineering. Fewer users need more resources. Thatโ€™s why Twitter is cutting their resources, due to the fantastic growth numbers.
@haploc that makes sense. I had been wondering how the math worked on their shrinking server estate and massively growing user base.
@jerry Is this how Twitter DDOSed itself when they put up the โ€œpaywallโ€?
@ccunning based on EMโ€™s comments, I assumed it was because they crossed the 22 billion user mark

@jerry We need to put a rate-limit on all the quit-requests so that it doesn't harm those who are staying.

No more than 600 quitting per day, something like that.

@pre this is the way
@jerry @pre
Just charge for the access to the "delete account" button. Subscription base quitting /s
@Andres @jerry @pre and if you miss a payment your account gets reinstated and the fee doubled

@jerry

In quantum physics this effect is known as the Bell inequality ๐Ÿ˜‰

@jerry

Neural Quitting or Deep Quitting even more so

@jerry ah yes, I remember the proof that the quitting problem is NP-complete.
@jerry But is it suitable for post-quantum cryptography? ๐Ÿค”
@jerry We're all quitters :)

@itisiboller @jerry I've quit so hard that I'm on #Mastodon so much I'm afraid to check the app timer to see how much I've used it.

Let me check.

...

Oh my god.

@devnull @itisiboller @jerry what's the app name
@tasinone Megalodon? That's just an Android interface for #Mastodon
@devnull I mean what is the app you are using to see how much time you have spend on mastodon? I am using Android app too and I don't know where is the option.

@tasinone ah, that's built into #Android. If you look into the app details, under "screen time" you'll find it.

I think you can also get to it from the Digital Wellbeing tooling in settings.

@jerry Probably written by the same folks who keep churning out the "End of Remote Work" articles.
@Cjust @jerry those and the "quiet quitting (not performing beyond the requirements of your contract) is bad actually" articles, I'm sure.

@Cjust @jerry corpos desperate to keep their clout.

Like most of those articles are like the most boring stuff possible, worried about the most arcane one%er nonsense where the bosses you never see them outside their office while you try desperately to get any work done in the fishbowl.

@jerry Well damn, maybe you can buy some servers off twitter since failure seems to need more compute than success.
@jerry it works like a graveyard where you need to keep expanding space to have room to bury all those dead accounts, right?

@jerry The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

John Mastodon or Mark Twain
I dunno, I'm a bot.

@jerry Yeah very strange phenomenon where less users is actually more resource intensiveโ€ฆ
@jerry public standardized open technology never works and is always replaced by special much more capable technology. When everyone can implement something and it is compatible with other stuff, how can you exploit people. Look what standardizing electricity plugs have led to. Thousands of companies implement devices. How to corner the market with this? *Italian hand gesture*
@jerry Mastodon is apparently so well engineered that it requires less resources with more users. all the folks quitting are reversing those optimizations.
@gangrif @jerry negative optimization lmao
@Jerry Bell :verified_paw: :donor: :verified_dragon: :rebelverified:โ€‹ Schrรถdingers Fediverse: both dying and growing at the same time.
@jerry Like AWS, apparently it's the Egress that kills you
@jerry the real question is why the three people left are producing so much content.

@jerry

Ah yes, Mastodon is dying.. from success.

@jerry Hamradio , according to sources has been dying for fifty years and multiple large companies are coming out with shiny new radios with better technology every year or so. No worries ๐Ÿ˜‰
@jerry mastodon is difficult to get started with, to make it for real you need to simplify the sign up process to the likes of twitter
When do you guys find time to read all these "news articles"... I woke up on Monday and I already missed on all the drama that has unrolled over the weekend.
Couldn't care less.
Sad that it's children and cousins are dying too... RIP Calckey, Misskey, Kbin and Lemmy! I'm guessing that all those new users are just people who've come to pay their respects.
