Hey fedi.

Let's try not to be dickheads to the newcomers this time around, ok?
@Are0h difficulty: impossible
@zkat i was just gonna say ... still a worthy goal! @Are0h
dickhead blues / brain, by Kara Jackson

@Are0h can I be a shithead, at least?

@Are0h couldn't even do that around people who've been here for months.

It really seems like the Fediverse kind of doesn't want people to use the Fediverse, is my impression after today. At least, not anyone who isn't among the techie elite.

@Impossible_PhD @Are0h
I'm surprised you describe it as "techie elite". The posts in my timeline this morning were from a psychiatric nurse, an electrician, an freelance musician, a cartoonist, an unemployed single mother, a community mental health campaigner, oh and there's one "Linux expert". And of course various newspaper and other media.

But perhaps it's different in German where the Fediverse is more established?

@StephanMatthiesen @Impossible_PhD @Are0h
Guess it depends whom you are following. And the attitude and -of course - luck.
I have a good mixture.
My timeline contains people from all over the world which is always very interesting.
@StephanMatthiesen @Impossible_PhD @Are0h we think there's a certain old guard of ... it's a bit like a bunch of AOLers joining IRC and usenet, where there's a little more of an etiquet set up and so that makes new folks feel like there's an elite class, not helped by, yes, some in the fedi being dickholes to folx who violate fediquet

@StephanMatthiesen @Impossible_PhD What I think I've seen is a lot of is the anti-growth crowd being largely techies.

I think part of this is "anti-growth ≈ want things how they used to be ≈ long-time user ≈ early adopter ≈ techie", but also the "It works for me, what's the problem?", "You can just start your own server" & "Actually, Mastodon is very simple" crowd are pretty unwelcoming to non-techies.

So maybe it's less about techies dominating in general, than among the not-welcoming crowd?

@sgf @StephanMatthiesen @Impossible_PhD Why do you welcome them? They didn't give a shit about us before, they are here because their beloved walled garden locked them out, and once that's sorted they are back there again. And tell their friends how Mastodon is shit and Twitter is great. So, why not being a bit frank and honest about that? I don't need to block them, but too much welcomeness is not worth it.
@sgf @StephanMatthiesen @Impossible_PhD It's also not really about tech. Completely not. That's sooo lame excuse. In fact it has nothing to do with tech. Just common sense should be sufficient for not pushing Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc to what they are today. And none of the folks that are coming atm actually have that little amount of common sense. They are still part of a big problem, and just waiting for the next situation to materialize that again.
@pino @StephanMatthiesen @Impossible_PhD Thank you, person-in-tech for hating on the new people. We didn't actually need an example of what we were discussing in the thread, but I guess it's a contribution, of a sort.
@Impossible_PhD @Are0h honestly if thats the impression youre getting, you just need to follow more/other people. I think many arent used to the idea any more of the tool needing us to make an effort to shape our experience.
@jefmes @Impossible_PhD I feel there should be a better solution. If this is the experience of someone who's been around a few months, it can be the experience of a new user, whose most likely response will be to quit Fedi.
@jefmes @Impossible_PhD Ah, another white guy coming in hot with nothing of use to say.

CLASSIC
@Are0h @Impossible_PhD LOL yes because all white guys are right-wing MAGA types who don't have any understanding, empathy, or sympathy for what other people experience. C'mon now, that's not helpful at all, and not who I am. There are shitty people in all corners of the internet, and I am fully aware that different groups experience horrible crap in ways I don't experience. That doesn't make it untrue that people of all backgrounds have to make an effort to manage what they're taking in.
@jefmes Ha, nobody said anything about all white guys being right-wing, so you're projecting here.

And I don't know who you are. That part is true.

I know that you're another white dude offering unhelpful information because you refuse to see from any perspective other than your own.

That has no political boundary.
@Are0h I don't see how you can say I'm not seeing other people's points of view when I'm saying I get it and am fully aware people have been having not great experiences because of how some of the servers are configured, and how different the experience can be depending on where someone jumps on board. My point is that it's different than other single-entity controlled services, it's much more like usenet, IRC, and "old internet". We have to put in the work to use the tools well. That's all.
@jefmes Because the topic isn't about tools.

It's about how people behave. And suggesting that person was responsible for how people express toxicity because of who they follow is a ridiculous assertion to make in a space like the fedi where people don't have to follow you to be dicks, as you are showing.

Obviously, the tools need to improve, but talking over people as if it is the only thing that matters is not the way to go about it.

Saying you understand that context is fine. Applying it is a whole other effort.

You need to do better on the latter because you sound like every other insufferable white dude in tech who doesn't want to address the core of problem.
@Are0h And you seem to be seeing everything and everyone else through the lens of race issues when if you knew me, you wouldn't even go there. The tools and tech I 100% agree aren't the problem, people always are. It's why I got booted from Twitter for calling out shitty behavior from the new overlords, why I left social networks like Nextdoor because of crappy, racist, Trump-loving neighbors, and why I generally dislike ad-driven social media that distorts our perceptions. We can all do better.
@jefmes And that's great for you, but it's pointless when you bring those behaviors here.

I didn't ask for your resume and for you to prove you are a Good White Guy™

What I did say was to do better instead of trying to impose a suggestion that has nothing to do with being said.

If you're about doing good like you say you are, this shouldn't be a great ask.

This is not about Jeff's feelings on the web, man.

For christ sakes.
@Are0h Alright man, I think we're on the same side of this conversation but just talking past each other. I hope people in general find a place in the fediverse that works for them, and I'll leave it that. I'm just glad everyone has options here that they don't get with the other services, hopefully that can keep improving in time.
@jefmes LOL, you're not even hearing what I'm saying. That's why we are 'talking past each other.'

Please just go away.
@Impossible_PhD @Are0h It's an odd thing I must admit, keep going though as there are quite a few tech luddites on here too.
@Impossible_PhD It really feels like that sometimes, but I try to remind myself that it's a small-but-vocal minority. We can try to help those getting crap from that minority, and help build the Fedi we want. We'll get there in the end. What Ro said, basically.
@Impossible_PhD @Are0h I’m in both Mastodon and Post.news. I’d take a look at Post, it may be closer to what you’re looking for.
@Impossible_PhD @Are0h I have felt this when wading into certain conversations. I just have to remember there is no “Fediverse” decision making authority / algorithm that will filter those types other than me for my timeline. There certainly are people who actively try to push others out, but these are individuals not the fediverse. The only recourse for that is to block and encourage new people to block as well.
@Impossible_PhD @Are0h Yeah, I'm just excited to think I might belong to the tech elite since I'm here 😂

@Are0h sorry, I couldn't help it ... I'll do my best this time ....giggles

Hugz & xXx

@Are0h I kinda feel like the people who should read this aren't gonna read this
@Are0h @kjrsten but ma, I want to act like the local HOA 😇
@Are0h let us know when they've settled in so we can start posting again.
@Are0h @kazaii This is the plot of the new Tom Cruise movie.
@Are0h Well ... as long as they don't be dickheads ...
@Are0h we can only hope! But I am afraid we won't get 100% nice person participation, and extreme minority that are dicks will be poster children for how mastodon is "bad".

@Are0h

Don’t be a dick, even if it’s just a tip 🙃

@Are0h as a newbie first time around I found it ok. Got to grips fairly quickly. Get a bit annoyed at posts that are just twitter copies
@Are0h some people are just naturally dickheads though ;)
@Are0h @AnthonyJK yes please, have already been in one argument about this, apparently its an unfair ask…
@Are0h Sorry but i refuse to stop being a dickhead to #Nazis #Racists #religious zealots #Climate denials and anti #LgbtPlus
@fonecokid LOL, obviously, there are exceptions.

Don't be that person.
@Are0h
But they are wrong on the internet!
😉
@Are0h The HOA mfkrs are already out in force.

@Are0h

Less passive-aggressive lecturing from the self-appointed Keepers of the Flame would be nice. It's supposed to be enjoyable here, not a purity test.

@Are0h Where's fun in such approach?
@Are0h @hynek not using the word “dickhead” would be a nice start :) just sayin… (and agree with the sentiment)
@[email protected] You're not my dad, random white man.

Take it back a notch.
@Are0h is that supposed to be a sample of the welcoming vibe you allude to or are you just grumpy?
@Are0h actually, never mind. This doesn’t seem fruitful from the outset. I don’t mean to start an argument. Let’s each enjoy our respective day. Take care.
@Are0h .. except when they're Nazis. Important clarification.
@codinghorror LOL don't be glib. This doesn't really need to be said... unless you're a Nazi.
@Are0h ehhh it kinda does need to be said! out loud! quite a bit! these days especially!
@codinghorror to whom? people you know?
@Are0h to newcomers specifically, as indicated in the original post
