Hey fedi.

Let's try not to be dickheads to the newcomers this time around, ok?

@Are0h couldn't even do that around people who've been here for months.

It really seems like the Fediverse kind of doesn't want people to use the Fediverse, is my impression after today. At least, not anyone who isn't among the techie elite.

@Impossible_PhD @Are0h honestly if thats the impression youre getting, you just need to follow more/other people. I think many arent used to the idea any more of the tool needing us to make an effort to shape our experience.
@jefmes @Impossible_PhD Ah, another white guy coming in hot with nothing of use to say.

CLASSIC
@Are0h @Impossible_PhD LOL yes because all white guys are right-wing MAGA types who don't have any understanding, empathy, or sympathy for what other people experience. C'mon now, that's not helpful at all, and not who I am. There are shitty people in all corners of the internet, and I am fully aware that different groups experience horrible crap in ways I don't experience. That doesn't make it untrue that people of all backgrounds have to make an effort to manage what they're taking in.
@jefmes Ha, nobody said anything about all white guys being right-wing, so you're projecting here.

And I don't know who you are. That part is true.

I know that you're another white dude offering unhelpful information because you refuse to see from any perspective other than your own.

That has no political boundary.
@Are0h I don't see how you can say I'm not seeing other people's points of view when I'm saying I get it and am fully aware people have been having not great experiences because of how some of the servers are configured, and how different the experience can be depending on where someone jumps on board. My point is that it's different than other single-entity controlled services, it's much more like usenet, IRC, and "old internet". We have to put in the work to use the tools well. That's all.
@jefmes Because the topic isn't about tools.

It's about how people behave. And suggesting that person was responsible for how people express toxicity because of who they follow is a ridiculous assertion to make in a space like the fedi where people don't have to follow you to be dicks, as you are showing.

Obviously, the tools need to improve, but talking over people as if it is the only thing that matters is not the way to go about it.

Saying you understand that context is fine. Applying it is a whole other effort.

You need to do better on the latter because you sound like every other insufferable white dude in tech who doesn't want to address the core of problem.
@Are0h And you seem to be seeing everything and everyone else through the lens of race issues when if you knew me, you wouldn't even go there. The tools and tech I 100% agree aren't the problem, people always are. It's why I got booted from Twitter for calling out shitty behavior from the new overlords, why I left social networks like Nextdoor because of crappy, racist, Trump-loving neighbors, and why I generally dislike ad-driven social media that distorts our perceptions. We can all do better.
@jefmes And that's great for you, but it's pointless when you bring those behaviors here.

I didn't ask for your resume and for you to prove you are a Good White Guy™

What I did say was to do better instead of trying to impose a suggestion that has nothing to do with being said.

If you're about doing good like you say you are, this shouldn't be a great ask.

This is not about Jeff's feelings on the web, man.

For christ sakes.
@Are0h Alright man, I think we're on the same side of this conversation but just talking past each other. I hope people in general find a place in the fediverse that works for them, and I'll leave it that. I'm just glad everyone has options here that they don't get with the other services, hopefully that can keep improving in time.
@jefmes LOL, you're not even hearing what I'm saying. That's why we are 'talking past each other.'

Please just go away.
