I wrote a short goodbye post on Reddit as we enter the last hours of Apollo. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the support over the years, it’s truly been the journey and dream of a lifetime building this app and meeting so many people. 🥰💙 https://reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/14nb5qs/today_is_apollo_for_reddits_last_day_and_i_just/
Today is Apollo for Reddit's last day, and I just released its last update. 🥹 I just wanted to say a big thank you to the folks who have used and supported Apollo over the years, it's been the dream of a lifetime to build this app over the last 9 years. ❤️ Read the eulogy inside! ❤️

Hey all, With that, Apollo's last update has landed! It includes: - Some fun easter eggs! - Tidies some things up for the closure later...

reddit
@christianselig thank you so much for everything ❤️
@christianselig Thanks for the great app and all the things you did. Really looking forward to what you will develop next.
@christianselig I think Apollo is the app I’ve used the most on my phone. Not only it was the sanest and most elegant way to access Reddit, but it was a piece of software full of joy and little quirky and sweet touches. Looking forward to see what is next, and I do hope that from this debacle something good will come out for the internet :)
@christianselig Thanks for making the best iPhone app. Period. I hope Apollo has a future as some Reddit-alternative client, but until then, I wanted to point you to wefwef.app, proof that your influence has inspired a whole new group of developers
@christianselig I unexpectedly got a lump in my throat reading that. Thanks, Christian!
@christianselig Your post brought actual tears. This is the end of an era for me, with Apollo and with Reddit. I don’t know where we’ll all end up, but thank you SO much for what you brought to the community. I’ll be there for whatever you do next. <3
@christianselig thanks Christian, Apollo has been a great app.
@christianselig goodnight, sweet prince 💜😢

@christianselig Thank you so much for everything. You carried me through covid with the best App in the world. I have left Reddit and will not be returning.

It's a shame, that greed killed one of the best apps. Already signed up for Pixel Pal. Keep up the good work and thank you for everything!

@christianselig As you can tell from my home screen, Apollo had its claws into my daily digital interactions. I've never had an app that did so much right, as far as taking advantage of what the ecosystem had to offer. What kickass widgets! My iPad will be very different after today.

@christianselig #reddit is unusable without #apollo

It’s just such a smooth and intuitive experience. We shall not see its likes again…

@christianselig What time does it shutdown? Would be cool to have a countdown. Using Apollo all I can tonight as a final goodbye but then am moving on to Lemmy/kbin. Thanks for the app!
@WiselyChosen @christianselig I think it’s down now. I was using the app and it crashed and nothing loads now. RIP.
@Morbidchromium @WiselyChosen @christianselig Yep same, I think the end has arrived and I cannot open the app anymore. RIP Apollo.
@imatthewcm @WiselyChosen @christianselig mine still opens, just nothing loads. I was not signed in though, since I no longer have a Reddit account. So maybe that’s the difference?
@Morbidchromium @christianselig Yep same just happened to me. Was thinking I had another 5 hours with it to make some final posts.
@Morbidchromium @WiselyChosen @christianselig shut down like 5 minutes early for you too?
@Turboo @WiselyChosen @christianselig Shut down years too soon due to greed and incompetence of Spez.
@christianselig Repeating what lots of people already said, thanks a bunch for one of the best iOS apps out there! Big kudos for being really engaged with the community around Apollo all this time 👍

@christianselig Thank you for all the years of hard work you've dedicated to this project. I hope you'll think about creating an app for Lemmy in the future. I believe that the Fediverse is the key to preventing such incidents like this from recurring. Plus, it's still in its early stages, giving us, the community, a chance to shape it.

Dude, you're great at making apps, and I'm excited to install more of your creations in the future. Much love! ❤️

@christianselig Today must feel so strange for you, hope you're holding up ok!
@christianselig Smiling because it happened. Thanks for everything, especially your transparency and communication with your users these past few weeks.
@christianselig Thank you! You made a great application used by tons of people. You’re awesome.
@christianselig thank you for everything, I’ve opened Reddit to myself because of your Apollo and right now have moved to https://lemmy.world/ , so hope to see “Apollo for Lemmy” someday!
Lemmy.World - A generic Lemmy server for everyone to use.

Lemmy

@christianselig Thank you for everything!
Guess I’ll see this screen for the last time opening your post, thanks for all the fish @christianselig I'll definitely miss your implementation of whatever cool thing I’ll see on the next WWDC
@christianselig thank you for everything you've done to make Reddit a more enjoyable and easily navigable experience. We'll miss your app so much. Best of luck with Pixel Pals and your future endeavors!
@christianselig thanks for an amazing app. I’m looking forward to whatever you do next.
@christianselig It was the best way to read Reddit and the only way. Thanks for this great piece of software

@christianselig I've used Reddit actively for a very short time, and it's entirely been because Apollo is such a beautifully crafted app.

Thanks for such awesome work. 🫡

@christianselig I’ve been off reddit since the day you made that post about huffman and his greed, and haven’t been back.

I don’t miss reddit at all.

I do, however, very much miss Apollo.

@christianselig thanks. And sorry. And fuck u/spez
@christianselig thanks for a beautiful piece of software that I used more than any other app on my iPhone for years. You are a huge inspiration to me. You’ve got a fan for life, buddy! ♥️
@christianselig If I can give one peice of unsolicited advice… hold off on open sourcing any code until you’re sure that Reddit’s board won’t force Spez’s hand in a month or two when they see a non-significant traffic drop. We can dream.
@christianselig thank you so much for all those years and listening to feedback and everything. What a great app. Absolutely beautiful send off with the wallpapers and even updates to the very end.

@christianselig Thanks for everything, wish you all the best.

One thing I always wanted to ask...

Redwall?

@christianselig sad to see this beautifully crafted app go down, but I am confident this is an important step in your career. You are about to do something big, my friend. I am _pumped_.

I’m so proud of you!

@christianselig thank you for all your work!

Have you considered releasing the Apollo codebase as AGPL or something? I would love to learn iOS development through your codebase.

@christianselig your app made me a Reddit lurker. Thanks for building it, and hope you get another awesome thing to build. Will be tracking you
@christianselig I've never used your app, as I hardly ever use Reddit. Their treatment of you was awful. I don't what you do next, whatever it is I will be happy to promote even if I'm not a user.
@christianselig It's breaking my heart Christian. Thank you so much for all your incredible work. I hope someday you consider creating an Apollo for something on the Fediverse.
@christianselig Sad it has come to this, but grateful for being able to share the experience all these years. Thanks for your great app and hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy your talent still in the future. 🤘💪
@christianselig thanks for the excellent app and for all your work. While it sucks that Apollo had to die, the Reddit API shitstorm made me reevaluate my time on that website and acted as a catalyst to finally delete my account after 15 years, and stop mindlessly scrolling for hours every day. There’s a world of untapped potential out there, I hope you find even more success with the next app that you work on. Good luck man.
@christianselig Godspeed and a sweet eternal rest to by far my most used app 🫡
@christianselig thanks for developing such an awesome app. I’m proud to have been a lifetime Ultra member. A little disappointed I can’t use the Apollo pet in pix pals without subscribing though. Nonetheless I hope you find great success in your future endeavors!
@christianselig thanks for your work man. Now that Apollo is gone there is no reasons for me to stay on Reddit so, good bye Reddit, I guess.
@christianselig you created the best app experience. Thank you for all the work you did making such a great experience for all your users.
@christianselig literally one of the best apps I have ever laid my thumbs on. I can’t wait to see what you build next! Thanks for making doom scrolling less gloomy
@christianselig Would love to see you take on a Mastodon App!
