Got off my call with Reddit just now about the API. Bad news unless I come up with 20 million dollars (not joking). Appreciate boosts. https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/
šŸ“£ Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing. Bad news for third-party apps, their announced pricing is close to Twitter's pricing, and Apollo would have to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is.

Hey all, I'll cut to the chase: 50 million requests costs $12,000, a figure far more than I ever could have imagined. Apollo made 7 billion...

reddit

@christianselig terrible news. I hope they come around to a more reasonable price.

Is there a particularly expensive method or endpoint that could be surgically removed, or is it sort of blankety expensive?

@elijah @christianselig it’s almost certainly meant to kill third party applications and push users to their in-house app. They have no interest in making the api usable.
@elijah @christianselig
I think it's a bad faith proposal from Reddit, clearly intended to kill off third party apps while pretending to be accommodating.
@elijah Each API call costs the same, yeah
@christianselig wow, that’s harsh. Also weird, and unlike many analogus APIs (YouTube, classic Twitter, etc) which try to align developer costs with server costs
@christianselig Just another reason to push for decentralized social services.
@fishcharlie @christianselig There’s a #Reddit alternative that’s a part of the #Fediverse (just how Mastodon is). It’s called #Lemmy. Maybe people can move to that. šŸ¤” https://join-lemmy.org

Lemmy

@gracjan @fishcharlie @christianselig I'm a Mastodon user new to the Fediverse. Do these related services like Lemmy require making a new account?
@swalchemist @fishcharlie @christianselig If someone is using another software that’s part of the Fediverse (Lemmy, Pixelfed, PeerTube, etc), you can follow them from your Mastodon account. You don’t need to create an account on that service. You also should be able to comment on and boost their posts.

@swalchemist @gracjan @fishcharlie @christianselig

As noted to follow users there and interact you can use the Mastodon account. I've wondered about having 'one' account across the servers but it doesn't really work just like the BirdSite isn't doing to well trying to be Youtube ;-)

This is one thing about the fediverse that sorta blows my mind. Each 'service' like Mastodon or Lemmy or PeerTube etc is focused on it's type of content and and features.

BUT b/c it's on ActivityPub everybody on all servers can follow and interact with accounts across the different types. The 'view' you'd see 'here' is a function of being on a Mastodon server. Think of a youtube channel but having the video gallery just viewed here as separate toots with videos.

It's a truly mind boggling level of connectedness, yet each has it's own features, strengths and future strengths ;-)

@pixelpusher220 @swalchemist @gracjan @christianselig Agreed. The thing that I’m personally still trying to wrap my mind around is when should I create an account on another service, vs just continuing to use my Mastodon account and interacting via ActivityPub. Net really sure the answer there.

@fishcharlie @swalchemist @gracjan @christianselig yeah I think the answer depends on what you want out of it.

For most casual consumption scenarios the existing account is fine. For *using* and creating content in that other service, you'd need to create an account

@pixelpusher220 @fishcharlie @gracjan @christianselig I'm fine with it having a different UI. But looking at https://join-lemmy.org/, I see no obvious way to get to the content. I tried copying and pasting a domain name on the Lemmy servers page, and then I could browse content and find usernames to paste back on my Mastodon server to follow them.

Lemmy

@swalchemist @gracjan @fishcharlie @christianselig You may already be following non-Mastodon accounts and not know it. So, as a practical matter, no.

But if you're looking for a UI experience closer to YouTube, Instagram, or Reddit, then yes.

@gracjan @fishcharlie @christianselig @LemmyDev nah, Lemmy is run by Nazis so never using it
@chocolatefossty @gracjan @christianselig @LemmyDev Great. That’s your choice. But as it stands right now, your post is completely meaningless considering you didn’t provide any sources, evidence, or proof.
@chocolatefossty @fishcharlie @christianselig @LemmyDev Currently there are many communists, not Nazis, but I get the sentiment. I’m currently not using it either for that reason, but this situation can 100% change if more normal people start creating servers. No single person or group of people can control Lemmy, just like it’s the case with Mastodon. Lemmy is really small right now (just over 500 monthly active users).
@chocolatefossty could you please explain yourself?
@tivasyk @chocolatefossty the *flagship instance* of lemmy (.ml) is very pro-Russian, and I moved away from it when I started noticing people talking about "Ukrainian invasion" and seeing comments criticizing Russia being heavily downvoted. luckily, as with every part of the Fediverse, there's a bunch of instances to choose from. personally, I'm quite fond of Beehaw.

@gracjan @fishcharlie @christianselig

Wow. Reddit managers seem to be real masterminds for introducing an API fee when an alternative is available.

But what do I know, I have never killed on online service.

@gracjan @fishcharlie @christianselig I personally was on Lemmy a few years ago. Seems to work great. Too bad I felt compelled to leave as every time I'd post a news article from BBC, CNN, Reuters, etc I was called a CIA agent, or propaganda troll, someone pushing fake news, etc. I was made to feel very unwelcome, even though I was posting these things in channels for news. Hopefully it's become a more welcoming place.
@ozoned @christianselig @gracjan @fishcharlie sounds like you were on lemmy.ml. There are other instances: beehaw.org, midwest.social, &lemmy.ca I've all found to be welcoming & "moderate."
@fu Yeah I was on lemmy.ml. Doesn't Lemmy federate though? So if I'm on beehaw.org and there's a post it could come from lemmy.ml and the comments federated. So I can comment from beehaw.org and it'll be reflected on the lemmy.ml post and vice versa?

@gracjan @fishcharlie @christianselig Lemmy is neat. The https://Beehaw.org community has been super buzzy these past couple of weeks and it's mostly replaced Reddit for me.

All I need now is an iOS client šŸ˜‰

@christianselig Insanity. I'm sorry! What a load of garbage.
@christianselig Holy crap, that’s absurd 😵
@christianselig this is so sad :( Apollo is the only way I interact with Reddit...
@christianselig JFC that’s awful, really hope they change their minds šŸ˜ž
@rileytestut @christianselig
Do you really think they will change their minds? It’s all about money and that’s it. I hate it to say so, but it’s always the money šŸ˜” #Apollo is my favorite #Reddit client and Iā€˜m not sure if I will use Reddit without!
@christianselig This isn’t even greedy—it’s just asinine. I’m sorry dude, let me know if there’s anything we can do to raise awareness.

@snazzyq @christianselig It especially feels like a punch in the face, since it SEEMED like Reddit was doing the right thing here, by communicating beforehand and saying why, etc. (And API payment is totally fine in principle!) Then this pricing...

Hopefully the tech content makers (like yourself) will make fuzz around this! This seems closer to "evil" than "crazy". šŸ˜•

@snazzyq @christianselig Didn't you just recently start using Apollo too? Kinda feel like this is your fault :p

No but seriously, this feels almost worth a video to talk about the insane pricing while highlighting a whole bunch of different Reddit Apps and what they bring to the table compared to the official App.

@snazzyq
If more folks start moving to fedi then that will hurt these greedy companies bottom line so just find a reddit analog on fedi and move there
@snazzyq Thanks man, might be time to take Margaret out of retirement and give her a megaphone instead of an inhaler
@christianselig @snazzyq nobody tells Margaret what to do.
@christianselig That is terrible. I hope you can work something out with them. Without Apollo, Reddit is useless as a service.
@christianselig This is nuts. I really hope they come to their senses. Let us know if there’s a way to help that you think will be productive.
@christianselig Colossal oof. I’m so sorry.
@christianselig Guess this is the end times? Sorry to hear that! You made an amazing app.
@christianselig We’ll make our own Reddit…?

But yes that is absolutely absurd.

Were they really expecting any of the third party clients to be able to afford this?

Or was this just a convenient backdoor to killing off said apps under the guise of ā€œwell we offered them a way forward but for $ome reason they declinedā€.

@Sonikku If they believed the rate was justified they’d sell reddit accounts with API access and collect the money directly. See, for example, the way banks were eager to charge ATM fees directly to consumers. The fact that it’s asked of the app providers is a tip that they are less interested in collecting it than driving users to where they collect all the telemetry.
@christianselig Do they want you to buy them?
@christianselig If this absurd pricing effectively leads to the end of 3rd-party Reddit apps, I'll just stop using Reddit like I did Twitter. Hope they reconsider
@christianselig damn, terrible news. Apollo is the only way I can stand to use Reddit, so, goodbye Reddit. Also goodbye on principle, because fuck that, and fuck late-stage capitalism and these companies ruining the internet.
@christianselig at that point they could as well kill it completely
@spielundzeug @christianselig I mean... It does seem like their way of doing exactly that without admitting they’re doing that. Infuriating and saddening 😤😢
@christianselig Sorry you're having to deal with that. šŸ˜• Wouldn’t use Reddit if it wasn't for Apollo.
@christianselig holy shit, that’s insane! I’m so sorry Christian, especially if this is the end for Apollo
@christianselig of course they’d be this greedy, it’s all a plan to kill third-party apps and close the platform off
