Reddit had become so valuable to me for several topic-specific subreddits that it's hard to leave.

But the Musk-like treatment of the people who helped make the site popular -- amplified by the CEO's deceit and arrogance -- is a reminder that highly centralized conversations are vulnerable.

So I'm disconnecting from Reddit and seeking alternatives, hoping that decentralization will win in the end.

Reddark

An open source website to watch subreddits going dark

@dangillmor
Hope the maintainer of reddark.untone.uk will soon start identifying links to these courageous, principled subreddit moderators' new homes in the #fediverse #OpenSource + #OpenData world.

@dangillmor how about subscribing to your favorite reddit channels in RSS?

@Eggfreckles @dangillmor

How does that work? I've never heard of RSS being used with Reddit.

@atatassault

RSS has been at the foundation of Reddit since very early on. Every subreddit can be accessed as RSS feed by adding .rss in the end of subreddit's name. Every user can also enable private RSS feeds and have private messages etc via RSS as well.

@Ohsin @atatassault
Because of your post I started using the RSS feeds to ease out of Reddit and it's reduced my engagement significantly. It'll be much easier to transition to another platform when I finally get around to picking one. Thanks!
@atatassault @dangillmor I just put .RSS after my favorite groups and users. Example: https://www.reddit.com/r/PowerPC.rss
Lemmy - A decentralised discussion platform for communities

Lemmy

@dangillmor #lemmy has filled the void for me. Federated, similarly to Mastodon, and a huge destination for folks leaving Reddit. Reminds me of the internet of old!

Lemmy - A decentralised discussion platform for communities

Lemmy

@dangillmor It's frustrating to watch something that functions as a public square be enclosed on and eroded by greed.

There are theoretically viable alternatives, I sincerely hope that people are more considerate with their next choice of social media platform.

@bh11235 I have good news! https://infosec.pub is running lemmy, and https://fedia.io is running kbin and we control them both

Infosec Exchange
@dangillmor Start your own lemmy server. It federates just like Mastodon does. And, if you don’t want to start your own, look on line. Lot’s of them have URL’s that start with BBS. Many Reddit forums have moved to lemmy servers.
@dangillmor there is no other option. Decentralization or heartbreak.
@dangillmor going dark for 48h isn't going to be enough. Subs should stay dark and users should boycott reddit until they come back on their policy change and propose a more sensible pricing. If we all go back after 2 days, this will just confirm it's ok to bully users and developers.
@dangillmor I found squabbles.io and thus far it's been a great alternative. Run by one guy who has been working and updating the site none stop for the past several days.
@dangillmor take a break. I regularly delete my accounts and start over when something pulls me back.
