WWDC 2023! New Macs, new OSes, and the unveiling of Apple Vision Pro.

Accidental Tech Podcast: 538: We Studied Thousands of Heads

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

@atpfm thank you for the link 🙏
@atpfm no way. This quickly? Hot damn gents.

@atpfm In talking about Messages, Casey said ”Audio messages are transcribed for the six people in the world that use them" – you're underestimating how often audio messages are used by people for whom English isn't their primary language, or where the written form of the language is more challenging to type. Every day here I see people using audio messages.

(that other messaging apps had this feature first is another reason they established greater popularity than Messages) #ATP #FollowUp

@atpfm Apple AR/VR Headset : maybe longer in the making than you think.

@atpfm the mention about Notes app was 💯
Is it the start of Notes becoming the
iTunes-esque bulking up of functionality ?
@atpfm I’m already digging the StandBy feature in iOS 17, but I really think Apple should implement this on iPad, especially older iPads so you could reuse them as digital picture frames or Home automation interfaces around the house.
@atpfm my initial feedback is that the dictation feature and the AutoCorrect are vastly improved. As evidenced above, the random capitalization may be not so much.
@atpfm @caseyliss has the right take on Vision pro. The social stigma, particularly for a douchebag with a $3500 headset, will be extreme. AirPods are $129. These goggles are not that.
@atpfm Marco, “keynote eve” is the night *before* the keynote. Like Christmas Eve is the night before Christmas.
@atpfm I knew there had to be an ‘80s camcorder commercial with a birthday party. Look at this lady. She looks like a Borg! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FQZMDvyO8w

@atpfm it sounds like the game porting tool might be a much bigger deal than Apple suggested. https://twitter.com/film_girl/status/1666127888679321602

“Apple added #DX12 support to macOS and Apple Silicon via its Game Porting Toolkit. It’s basically a 20k patch to Wine that will make it easy to play AAA Windows games on macOS without using a VM. https://t.co/OFwc0NREb6”

@atpfm  Vision Pro Jumpscare 😂😂😂
@atpfm @marcoarment can you kindly go into details about SwiftData and how it’ll help you with Overcast development, PSOU said it improves iCloud Syncing. Will that change your CloudKit decision and its timeline ???

@atpfm do we know, when Hideo Kojima was seen at apple campus? This could approximate when those videos are shot
@atpfm Isn't two 4k screens still just half of a single 8k? An 8k would be a 2x2 grid of 4k's. And then when you deduplicate all the pixels that are shared between your two eyes, my guess is the headset will be overall similar to a 5k.

@atpfm This was a weird one to listen to. @marcoarment came out differently as he was in the audience, and sounded more enthusiastic. Whereas @caseyliss and @siracusa didn't sound as sold on the idea of Vision Pro.

I just don't think this can be called a revolutionary product. They might sell the first version well in VR headset terms (not iPhone terms), but how about the second version? If the leap isn't big enough sales graph will look like iPad.

@atpfm @siracusa I am rather amazed they didn’t show any actual augmented reality. I thought for sure at least we’d see some amazing Find My visualization where your AirTags glow like a beacon or something.

@atpfm @siracusa I also thought we would see something like Google tilt brush from Apple for 3D painting.

@atpfm Concept2 user here, coming out of the woodwork to say that I like “vibe check”.
@atpfm I would have thought clicking your AirPods and having Phish play in another room would be a feature, not a bug for @marcoarment
@atpfm @marcoarment it’s pretty simple to estimate the power draw from the battery size. It looks to be a 10 to 15,000 mAh battery, which are 3.7V cells, so it’s 37 to 55 Watt hours. With a 2.5 hour runtime, that’s 15-22 W average power draw. Quite low for all that hardware and processing. Impressive.
@atpfm @marcoarment There is an optional top strap for the Vision Pro. See this @macrumors article. https://www.macrumors.com/2023/06/09/apple-vision-pro-weight-optional-strap/
Apple Still Hasn't Discussed the Vision Pro's Weight and Optional Top Head Strap

Coming away from all the press coverage and the demonstration videos that Apple released for its Vision Pro headset, most people would be forgiven...

MacRumors
@atpfm If the Mac supported HDMI-in we could use the Xbox, Playstation, etc. with the fancy goggles.
Is that just a software issue on Macs with an HDMI port?
@atpfm Will desktop widgets in the new macOS finally force the, shall we say, more cluttery among you to finally clean up your desktops?
@atpfm On the MacOS naming and pronunciation topic - as a Brit, in the past I always read Sonoma as Sonn-(rhymes with John)-Nom-Ma until I heard Craig say it differently 🤷
