why does everyone want to own the libs

as an open source developer i own multiple libs

i would happily pay people to take them from me

you do not want to own libs. its so much work

@qdot I have two libraries that are popular but they're in a language I haven't professionally used since 2013. I'm not sure I can recommend it. In fact I'm pretty sure I can't.
@tedivm @qdot wait, *you're* the guy who wrote securesocial for scala play! ?
@ghorwood @qdot Nope, I'm actually going to use scala for the first time next week for a different project. I was referring to my PHP Libraries, JShrink and Stash.

@tedivm @qdot i was trying to be a smartass...

anyway, this is great line taken out of context. legit.

@qdot once you own the libs, they very quickly start to Own You !!
@qdot Lololol took me a second glance to get this
@qdot Owning is so 2010s. Everything is subscription now.
@qdot you merely owned the libs. I was born in them, molded by them.
@qdot rms has owned so many libs
@qdot Those who want to "own the libs" have never experienced the compatibility issues that arise.
@qdot if you love the libs, set them free. if they come back to you, you own them.
@qdot owning libs to own the libs
@qdot what gets me is when people pronounce it “lybes”
@qdot As an open source developer why would you want to own the libs? Public domain those libs!
@qdot i saw someone today post that they wanted to own the LABS too.

@qdot

sudo chown vinesnfluff /usr/lib/

Owned the libs 😎👉

@qdot @huxley oof, not only that it is a constant pain when tons of people wanna use your code, but then just complain about it… and how you should do it “better/differently” but not actually offer any assistance >.>

Like bruh… It is all here, Open-source feel free to fork and do a PR since you are saying you could do it better… I am one person, trying to maintain this damn thing…

@hack13 @qdot not sure if you missed the "own the libs" joke -- it's an American right wing phrase 😁

(Sorry to explain a joke unnecessarily if you already knew!)

@qdot you have licensed it accordingly? May be legal issues if don`t (it may make harder for people to contribute...)
@qdot owning multiple libs? In this economy?
@qdot @lanodan As a Lisp programmer,
owning the cons is so much more interesting.
@qdot This made me laugh even though I'm not really a developer

@qdot In one GitHub org, I maintain 53. It's… well, it's a burden. And with work being programming, too, I'm too often too burnt out to roll releases at night. At least their in-house changes are pushed to a public branch. 😭

It's a TON of work.
(Another 28 on my personal GH.)

@qdot @arthurwyatt I guess you forked your life up, then?
@qdot

> why does everyone want to own the libs

Sharing libs is communism and you'll go to DLL hell

@qdot This is how you own the libs:

@qdot the #freesoftware movement was destroyed by free software activists who lost sight of the original mission of making software free and content themselves with owning the libs

nobody ever assigned them their copyright again.
