This extends to #IT and #infosec too. Open source projects don't have a profit motive, they don't sabotage their own usefulness for money, and they have much better prospects for long lifespans. The worst that can happen is that the community implodes for some reason, at which point they split up and continue on separate paths (or forks as the case may be).
Long story short, use fediverse technologies for social stuff, use open source for technical stuff, don't feed the juggernauts your money or clicks, cause they don't care anyway.
