For a long time, I had grown despondent of the web ever escaping the trap of the corporate network effect. Mastodon feels like a way out; I'm glad to be here

So, #introduction. I'm Paul Voosen, the earth and planetary science reporter at Science magazine. I cover #climate, #NASA, #geoscience, Mars rocks, foram tales, gyres, ridges, slabs, clouds. And mostly, I'm here to listen in. So I'm going to try and convince as many geoscientists to join us here as possible.

@voooos Welcome :-) Although I joined in 2016 I have hardly been here - I am finding its become all the good things the bird moved away from.
I hope you enjoy it!
@voooos Also CLOUDS. I am a halo spotter...

@voooos

It is nice to not be bombarded by advertising.

@voooos Such important work! I'm just a space nerd/HS teacher, but looking forward to Mastodon possibilities!
@voooos great to see you on Mastodon

@voooos so great to experience Mastodon. No adds, no noise.

Now the learning period starts 🤭

@voooos Followed for the science, but also noticed your Google generated header. I had one on Facebook for years.
@wasootch It is positively archaic now in AI years, but still strikes me as a wonderful mix for my beat -- Earth, humanity, and CS mixed together.
@voooos glad you are here Paul!
@voooos Welcome Aboard! #LookWhosHereNow
@BakerRL75 Thanks! I've actually been here since early Nov -- no idea why my intro got recirculated again, but that's social media for you.
@voooos I think it’s great! We have so many more users now, and it takes a bit for them to find people across instances. This just helps the new folk know who’s here or who’s joined.
@voooos May I suggest listing at http://mastofind.net
Mastofind

An opt in mastodon discovery, verification and search application.

@voooos Thanks Paul. I want to believe we’re breaking free of “big silo” social media. I have a hunch we’re heading for dual internet where noisy, mass populism defines one channel, while more sober and intellectual, salon-like channels are where the more serious minded of society choose to loiter and exchange views. The daily corrosive impact of the MAGA movement may make such an elitist-ish schism unavoidable.

@voooos I see this is from Nov. but welcome! :)

Do you think you could get @newsfromscience posting here on Mastodon? Maybe they could make an account on journa.host?

I do see there is https://sciencemastodon.com/@sciencemagazine but they have never posted.

Science Mastodon
@ChrisWalter You know I pushed for them to create that account, but I have only limited sway to get them to use it, esp given our small social media staff. (I'd obviously love to see that, of course.) I'll ask them to evaluate it again at some point.
@voooos Thanks. Probably, the easiest thing will be when/if their social media manager program supports Mastodon since then they can add it to the list of places they automatically post to. I think that is the way the communications team on the telescope I work on does it.
@voooos Thank you! That's a great community service.

@voooos I like it better here every day ✌️

Especially enjoyed in your bio "distrusts narratives but still writes them".

Let me know if you need any cheese around here. 🧀

@voooos Welcome! Glad to have you here.

@voooos

welcome! I look forward to getting to know you thru your posts.
