A thing that I hate is when the transit app has listings for the "east" and "west" routes on the current road but the road very definitely runs north-south
I think if you're the only person on the bus you should just be allowed to ask the bus driver to go directly to your destination for you. Or at least like. Run through the McDonald's drive through for you or something.
Man… this guy is so cool

GOOGLE MAPS: So, first get on the Subway.

ME: Okay, what direction?

GOOGLE MAPS: What?

ME: …what?

* I guess a direction, it's ultimately correct. *

GOOGLE MAPS: Okay, now transfer to the bus.

ME: What direction?

GOOGLE MAPS: What?

Public transit *sounds* like a good idea until you actually go to a bus stop and wait for a bus and eventually realize the bus doesn't exist, bus schedules and transit app directions are pretty myths for children, bus systems don't exist, in fact "Montreal" doesn't exist, "Montreal" is just a social construction, in cold hard reality society is an illusion and people act arbitrarily according to their own motivations and none of those motivations involve driving a bus in a direction I am going
Subways are ultimately the only viable form of public transit because trapping a bus on a set of rails is the only way to prevent it from realizing the futility of its actions, abandoning its route and joining an anarchoprimitivist commune in the country
@mcc It's true, feral busses roam the abandoned farms of northern new england forming ad-hoc self-organizing agrarian communities.
Passenger’s jump from burning MBTA train captivates people online: ‘Who is that brave woman?’

After her leap, the unidentified passenger refused to get on a nearby boat and swam to shore.

The Boston Globe
@mcc @aldeka this is famously why bustitution of the streetcars led to declining ridership. the buses simply drove away to follow their dreams
This Nuclear Fallout Bunker Is Composed of 42 School Buses Buried Underground

One couple in Canada has created the largest nuclear fallout bunker on the continent of North America. The shelter can accommodate roughly 500 people and covers just over 3,000meters of underground space.

Interesting Engineering
@mcc If you haven’t read @annaleen’s “The Terraformers”, please allow me to strongly recommend it at this moment.
@mcc
Except when the subway trains go mad from slavishly following repetitive routes in the endless claustrophobic darkness and escape to become feral cave dwellers, hiding in unexplored subterranean reaches and devouring anyone sent to find them or explore their mysterious tunnels. "Smart subway trains" are a fundamentally hazardous proposition.
@n1xnx I hadn't thought of that
@mcc there are other options, trams and trolley buses, both rein the natural urges of the transport vehicles to run off the rails.
@mcc that does explain the old busses lost in the countryside

@mcc all me weird, but I prefer overhead monorails of the #SAFEGE-Style!

Because that stuff is far cheaper than drilling tunnels and can be dome.quite well...

@mcc Isn't this essentially the plot of Thomas the Tank Engine?
@mcc I might recommend the app called "transit", transit directions are not tacked on after the fact to a driving-first app like google maps
@mcc once upon a time, with my gf we took the bus to go see a movie. From one end of the line go the other. We were supposed to grab the last one in the opposite direction to get back home. We wait at the stop. We wait. People start to leave by foot. We wait. We worry. No backup plan. We wait. 45 minutes late, bus show up. Driver say she had fallen asleep. She tell us we can ride for free.
@mcc ‘Montreal’ is the biggest lie since we landed on the supposed ‘moon’
@mcc sounds like your public transport is fucking ass

Everyone knows bus stops are marked by signs on both sides of the road

Numbered like

H.1
H.2

And all transit apps (who are updated live, please use your local providers app and not google maps who have outdated info)

Always specify at which stop busses arrive
Also Busses definitely should exist, otherwise you simply don't have public transit

Also if nooone uses public transit, they're not gonna have money to service many places, leading to noone using public transit

It's an
investment
@mcc your whole thread screams skill issue

It's obviously possible to build working public transport using busses and trains
(Maybe if your city is spaced out and very car centric, you'll have problems -
In that case may god help you)
@mcc The inability to not show all exits on a map keeps blowing my mind.
@mcc Google Maps: I'm feeling lucky edition
It’s crazy that the largest software company in the world with the most advanced navigation system to this very say doesn’t display the PLATFORM of the train you’re supposed to depart with.
@mcc I saw a relative of his in New York. So cool.
@mcc It would be great to ask for a change in the voice that notifies each stop, or at least add a bit of humour.
@mcc I think you *are* allowed to ask that. But they won't do it.
@aubilenon @mcc idk, I've had late night bus drivers straight up ask folks where they want to be dropped off on the last runs of a quiet night. as long as they're not going wildly off-route or wasting a ton of time they're usually pretty chill.
@mcc seems like it'd mess with the routing though? I'd be willing to ask a passenger if they could use a short deviation, but only if I wasn't already late to my timing point.
@mcc The trouble with doing that is how it would impact people waiting to get on the bus at upcoming stops.
@mcc Actually skipping pickup points is hard, but when I was a kid, on a bus that I regularly took and knew the driver, if you're waiting by the exit they'd ask exactly where you wanted to get off and stop right there.
@TomF @mcc Yeah I used to get off at the last stop before the bus driver put the bus to sleep, so he used to drop me off wherever. :)
@mcc Yeah, fuck those people who might be waiting at the scheduled stops, amirite?
@mcc this is always how i feel when i’m waiting for my bus and i see three different, completely empty buses go by with nobody getting on. like buddy clearly you’re not doing anyone a great service right now so how about we go on a little scenic tour and i get home an hour early
@mcc how about other people waiting at the stops that will be skipped?
@mcc You can! Ask, I mean. They might say no. But they also might say yes!
@mcc There's a little Cessna flight from here down to New York that lands in Westchester and then they shuttle you into the city. Theoretically to Penn Station, but if the shuttle is relatively empty and traffic isn't bad you can just ask the driver to take you wherever and he does. It's great.
@steve @mcc I was the last one on the bus back from college once and the bus driver was just like “ok we’ve passed Santa Cruz and it’ll take me just as long to go to the actual station as your house, so why don’t you just tell me where you want to go”
@mcc thats how it works in Montréal, if your a young student or the last on the bus the driver will usually drive you to your final destination if it’s not too far out of the way.
@Aitchkaye well. I should have asked
