People who are not qualified to drive shouldn't depend on cars to get around. The vast majority of people are not qualified to drive.

"Oslo has been putting in place modal filters, to block [cars] while still allowing access for #walking, #cycling, and #PublicTransit

... protected bicycle lanes are really car #infrastructure, right? ... If you remove the majority of the cars and slow down the ones that are left, people cycling don't really need anything special at all. #StreetDesignManual for #Oslo is available in English, unlike the #VisionZero and #ClimateAction Plans of US cities like #Portland, it has actual mandates to #TrafficEngineering, where we use the proven (to kill dozens of ppl per year with cars) #MUTCD and #AASHTO guidance and just put what we wish would happen in the plans while #TrafficEngineers hobble those goals with cars-first designs based on counting cars, creating #InducedDemand for only cars, hostile to people.

The key thing about using #TacticalUrbanism to uncover a complete low-stress bikeway network from under the parked cars or spare lane of congestion, is that you can afford to do it all at once and iterate, be responsive to feedback, and get the #InducedDemand you want immediately: people on #bikes and #transit, rather than after you finally connect dozens of disjoint showpiece projects πŸ™„ as if you could actually survive those decades of debt.
@enobacon I found that automatic driving demo that Google did years ago very upsetting, realizing all of the things happening on the road that my human eyes and brain can’t account for. And I am a relatively careful driver, I know some people are just playing on their phones.
