I currently keep my Mastodon use only on personal device so I can't easily post updates from the AASHTO 2nd Annual Safety Summit. I'm live tweeting some of my notes you-know-where starting here https://x.com/BarbChamberlain/status/1846183526254928126?t=Td8BA-RKWEAfb_CYtl3UnA&s=19.

In Houston for AASHTO Safety Summit opening today.

From the head of TxDOT: Nov. 7, 2000, was the last day in Texas on which no one died in a crash on Texas roads. 80M VMT/year means their crash rates are 30% below average, which reminds me that rates aren't a great measure.

@NoRomBasic @bikemonterey The new #AASHTO Bike Guide really is going to come out and it will have more recommendations around protected bike lanes. Don't recall offhand what it includes. In snow country those lower curbs permit snow plowing into the bike lane which obviously isn't ideal. If they come back through and plow the snow truly away, that's great.

@CathyTuttle It’s not bad for the US. Engineers here don’t have good specs on how to lay these out, so they are always kind of odd. The raised curb islands should be narrower to provide more queueing space for people on bikes. That would have happened if the bike lanes were wider. We need better templates for them to copy and paste into their plans. Maybe #AASHTO will release their new bike guide this year (I’ve been saying that since 2018)…

@glightly Yep, seems like it's a common practice to put these stupid buttons on the wrong side of trails. They just did the same thing here at two crossings on a brand-new trail segment that has push-button operated flashers. Obviously designed by someone who has no idea about bikes or accessibility! (And they installed bollards at the worst possible spots, too.)

@BarbChamberlain Any word from #AASHTO on that new bike guide that was supposed to be out back in 2018? They’ve really been dragging their feet on it.
https://cal.streetsblog.org/2023/11/03/i-lost-my-job-at-caltrans-for-speaking-out-against-highway-widening Most state departments of transportation are stuck in the past in multiple ways - culture, corruption, male-dominated, old-world thinking. To build our future we need new leadership and we need to hold our electeds accountable for "driving" change. #Caltrans #AASHTO #Newsom #YoloBypass

My concerns were repeatedly brushed off by my bosses, who seemed more concerned about getting the next widening project underway than following the law

#StreetDesignManual for #Oslo is available in English, unlike the #VisionZero and #ClimateAction Plans of US cities like #Portland, it has actual mandates to #TrafficEngineering, where we use the proven (to kill dozens of ppl per year with cars) #MUTCD and #AASHTO guidance and just put what we wish would happen in the plans while #TrafficEngineers hobble those goals with cars-first designs based on counting cars, creating #InducedDemand for only cars, hostile to people.

ATTN folks in the field of transportation with questions about the impact of Twitter's recent changes. AASHTO's communications committee is hosting a virtual meeting on Dec. 15 with representatives from various DOTs to discuss just that.

Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: Atwitter over Twitter: Assessing the Current Landscape (hosted by AASHTO's TransComm). After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

Twitter has become a necessary tool for most government agencies, especially state departments of transportation. The platform allows organizations to quickly push out important messages to a wide audience, including customers, media (who amplify those messages), and other stakeholders such as lawmakers. However, recent changes at Twitter have created challenges for state DOTs that have come to heavily rely on the platform. While parody accounts have always existed, it has become much more difficult for the general public to discern between real and fake accounts. And the larger question remains—are our audiences still there and is it still the platform that we as state DOT communicators have come to rely on? If the answer is no, where do we go from here? Join the AASHTO Committee on Communications (TransComm) this important discussion, where attendees will hear state DOT communications leaders discuss their experiences navigating the current Twitter landscape, including the new (and maybe not-so-new) challenges they’re encountering. While this situation is still very much evolving, attendees will be able to connect with colleagues on an issue that impacts us all. Moderator: Lloyd Brown, HDR Speakers: Mike Allende, Washington State DOT; Tracey Bramble, Iowa DOT; Katina Lear, Georgia DOT; and Carly Olexik, North Carolina DOT.
