More cities in #France install "Méduse" anti-noise radars, which have 4 microphones, and a camera to automatically ticket vehicles that exceed a certain number of decibels

@straphanger I think this is the kind of thing @zapaman might be interested in…
@straphanger the hell freezes before that happens. that must be ironic.
@straphanger cool, can we deploy automatic speech/speaker recognition on those as well?
@straphanger I've been obsessed with this idea for #NYC ever since these started getting rolled out in France! Excited to see usage increase.
@straphanger What a great idea we could use that here.

After a certain threshold, you can pretty reliably determine the gender of who is driving a vehicle... by how much noise it makes...

This is not a 100% correlation, but a person could make a good amount of money if they could figure out how to bet "male" on stupidly loud vehicles going by,

@straphanger how about they spend their money narrowing streets and make cities more walkable instead?

@straphanger Attention @cstross there is _no way_ that a "Méduse" antinoise system is not a Laundry-adjacent project like the Basilisk network

@trochee @straphanger @cstross

While I'm all for eldritch horror and Laundry references, I feel it needs to be said that "méduse" in French also means jellyfish.

Now, it may or may not be a coincidence that these devices are first being tested next to the ocean.

@montessiel @straphanger @cstross that's what i would EXPECT from the Deep Ones
@straphanger It sounds like a variation of the #Klingon proverb: qaStaHvIS wa' ram loSSaD Hugh SIjlaH qetbogh loD 😀
@straphanger @wayemason
This is amazing.
@TonyaCanning @straphanger still working to get the province to let us do tickets for photo radar red lights noise etc. Since the MVA was written in the 1930s it doesn't really support that kind of thing lol
@straphanger makes me proud to ride an electric motorbike.
@straphanger oh boy do we need this on Marine Drive in White Rock BC..
@straphanger I want this in #Lichtenberg #Karlshorst #Berlin. I'm sure we could crowdfund, even.
@larsmb @straphanger You trust Berlin officials to track down something mobile for noise pollution when even stationary church bells escape them?
@straphanger In the US, it's Subarus, Mustangs and Chargers. And the message they all convey - "I'm being driven by an unvaccinated douchebag with testosterone issues..."

@straphanger @mhoye this is amazing. I just hope there is support for those who can only afford jacked up rides, heh.

I live next to a mechanic and, LET ME TELL YOU, mechanics all drive jacked up cars. When they leave for the day, I can feel vibrations in my stomach.

@straphanger @spride that's one step closer to my ultimate goal: a device that automatically fires a terawatt laser at any car or motorcycle exceeding 85 dB.

@memory @straphanger

I’d actually like to see a momentum limit enforced over a speed limit. A bike doing 30 mph (don’t laugh, I’ve achieved that) is much less dangerous than a semi doing the same speed on the same road).

@spride @straphanger 85 decibels, not mph/kph :) But your idea is nonetheless intriguing!
@straphanger I wonder how often these will hear a loud noise but photograph the wrong thing.
@straphanger

I'm not for omnipresent surveillance, but I am for making sure people don't behave antisocially in ways that compromise our ability to live densely. So, good and bad here, but more good than bad, on balance, I think, provided there's no recording and archiving.
@straphanger @backstube a much better approach to fine/punish those individual idiots, rather than the stupid suggestions in Germany banning motorbikes from certain places or at certain times, implying all motorbike riders exhivit antisocial behavior
@straphanger We could so use something like this on my street! Doesn’t help that there’s a Harley dealership not far from here.
@straphanger ooooh we had two of these motorcycles passing by when I was in front of the door with the cat recently, who got appropriately scared, and I wished for nails on the road or something… this is a good initiative!
