@fribbledom ich geh mal BlueSky googlen...
@skyr @fribbledom Dacht ich mir auch grad so 😅
@fribbledom we don't even know if Bluesky instances would moderate and defederate content from other instances
@ahriboy @fribbledom Sadly it appears they won't moderate hate speech, and will continue the techbro "freedom of speech, not freedom of reach" dogma:
https://mastodon.social/@hughster/110259609667652608
@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom They are moderating it, by not showing it.
@ekana @ahriboy @fribbledom But it's still there. They'll still be able to recruit and organise, as well as harass and stalk people even if what they're saying is hidden.
@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom At best they can stalk, they can't really harass because the user (whose presumably hiding these bad actors through there algorithm) wont even see them saying things on there post. Sure they may be able to organize, but they can organize on mastodon too, they can organize and recruit anywhere on the internet.
@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom And although I don't like that they can stalk, getting banned doesn't stop them from viewing your public posts on really any social media.
@ekana @ahriboy @fribbledom No, but it's massively easier to stalk you if they're in the same network as you and can follow you in their feed along with everyone else.

@ekana @ahriboy @fribbledom And they can still harass, because they could easily marshall other users on the network who haven't yet been hate-flagged, as well as targeting the huge numbers of users who've neglected to flick the hate switch to "off".

They can organise on Mastodon, yes, but on tiny walled-off servers where all they can see and reach is other extremists. There's no reason to give them another huge mainstream platform to use.

@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom the hate switch is off by default. So no chance someone will have it on unless someone intentionally turns it on. They don't know whether they've been flagged or not to really coordinate in such a way, but at that point it's just a brigade, and again that can happen on all networks. It's at that point that your block button should be ready, and your provider would come in for assistance.

@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom usually in this story the user would take their account private to weather the storm but I'm not sure if Bluesky has that option. But again, it's not like these things don't happen of mastodon.

I'm not saying it's perfect, it's not, but no system is perfect. But the good this is it's being built in the open, and soon people will be able to directly contribute.

@ekana @ahriboy @fribbledom I think it'd be quite easy to figure out whether or not you've been flagged by whether or not you're able to elicit replies from any "normies".
@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom possibly, but I mean that's a degree of difficulty these trolls would have to deal with. More likey they'd just make an alt account built to harass with, but, that can be done already.

@ekana @ahriboy @fribbledom It can. But this doesn't change the fact that they're on the same platform, replying to all your stuff directly, marshalling others to try to dox you etc. in your own threads, and all you have to do to turn your social media site into a dangerous extremist cesspit and be flooded with vile notifications is to flick a single switch.

If you're going to have moderators to flag extremists, why not just have them kick them and their content off? Why won't BS do that?

@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom because they aren't centralized, they are federated, on like two layers. Distribution is provided by a provider, and what you physically see is provided by another entity. Both of these are of your choosing. The labels are for all content across the nodes. Bluesky may just boot those guys, but that doesn't stop them from spooling up another server.
@ekana @ahriboy @fribbledom But the Fediverse shows that a federated system can remove this content, both by removing it from instances and defederating from other instances that won't remove it.
@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom Yeah, and I doubt that's impossible on Bluesky (could be tho). I'm sure the indexer you chose can choose not to crawl from certain distributors.
@ekana @ahriboy @fribbledom If it turns out that you can't, would it be truly federated at all?
@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom yes, it's still multiple independent nodes working in consort.
@ekana @ahriboy @fribbledom Personally, I'd say that federation would require that such nodes choose which other nodes to connect to. Otherwise, it'd just be distribution, surely?
@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom Not by any definition that I'm looking up right now (just so I could be sure). But to be fare we can just say they are decentralized and leave it at that (or at least plan to be).
@ekana @ahriboy @fribbledom And I'm not sure that this does happen on Mastodon, or at least not on this server. The moderation is so quick and so effective that I've seen next to zero extremist content here since I joined.
@hughster @ahriboy @fribbledom it does, but it's very quick to nip in the bud on here at least. Important to remember that dosocial isn't the world. Also Mastodon is not a very spicy place to attack as of right now, that's Twitter. But remember, Bluesky will also be moderated by dedicated teams just like here. The structure is just about different. And it's not like those guys can be super banned entirely. They can it would just be like asking AWS or something to stop hosting dangerous people

@fribbledom I get the sentiment.

That said, there's probably going to keep being a couple different platforms which will be closed, ActivityPriv, ActivityPub, etc. It's just how things go.

@fribbledom Who has even heard of Bluesky?
@Stefan_S_from_H Dunno, a bunch apparently. My feed is pretty full of people asking for invites.
@Stefan_S_from_H @fribbledom I heard about it for the first time yesterday, I think.
@fribbledom @eons I read somewhere that Bluesky is already dominated by crypto and NFT stuff and NFT projects are distributing invites as perks of the NFTs. 😔
@alfredbaudisch @fribbledom @eons Basically all the people I saw on Twitter talking about Bluesky were Bluechecks (right before I blocked them)

@zii_0 @alfredbaudisch @fribbledom I've seen _normal_ people too but yeah, it seems to be surrounded by cryptocrap (ex Twitter's Jack is the head of that thing so is expected to be like that)

Is also super limited, basic features like blocking seem to not work and other things.

@fribbledom You will see this because…they don’t want to leave Twitter, they don’t want to pay for Twitter, Dorsey makes Bluesky (and funds Nostr-il), and so…the the thought is likely that they’ll just move to Twitter 2.0 and continue like Musk never happened…which it isn’t. And it won’t.
A (bad) analogy would be leaving a bad relationship and looking for a less bad relationship where the new person just doesn’t steal…because that’s what you are used to.
@fribbledom The meme that keeps on giving!
@fribbledom oh no, how will we get by without all the people that are still on Twitter
@fribbledom right, bluesky really is a good app can’t wait to use it

@fribbledom
- Bu...but it's from the same guy who made Twitter! 🤪

+ So you think that's something good?

@lordtaku

Nah, just look at my disgruntled face 😂

@fribbledom
Afaik bluesky advertises itself with "no moderation" or whatever. Which, afaik, is not compliant with the NetzDG, which requires moderation of hate speech and illegal content. So at least in Germany (and maybe the EU, idk if they also have a similar law) it seems like bluesky would not be able to do business. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
@fribbledom we have to do what venture capitalists tell us. everything else is just a distraction.

@fribbledom This is exactly how I feel about the #Bluesky Buzz. The #Fediverse is great and open and not backed by a company.* So why bother?

* Technically, #Mastodon gGmbH is a company, but they are legally non-profit.

@fell @fribbledom Bluesky is a PBLLC, so legally-speaking they are exactly the same as Mastodon: https://blueskyweb.xyz/blog/2-7-2022-overview
Announcing Bluesky PBLLC

@eddy @fribbledom Interesting, thank you for pointing that out.
@fribbledom is there any chance Bluesky may join the Fediverse?

@iod

Very unlikely, since Bluesky created their own protocol (AT protocol) and don’t use ActivityPub (which powers the Fediverse).

Most of the hype atm(!) is just generated by being invitation only (remember club house?), co-created by the founder of Twitter - and being “decentralized” with one node only (so not decentralized at all) - so it’s a way smoother onboarding for people who only use the big player and never owned different domains/email addresses 😉

@fribbledom

@fribbledom How is Bluesky going to differ from Mastodon?
@NBCactus the biggest difference is that your identity and your post history should be fully portable, so that's pretty cool imo. but there's no indication how it would actually work because there's just a single server on the network right now.

@fribbledom @skpodila I’m also kind of not getting it. I joined Bluesky too and it’s incrstuously toxic like Twitter already.

I’m somewhat perplexed by how quick that seemed to happen.

I’m confused by the problems of this site and I’m confused how Bluesky got that way already. 🤷🏼‍♂️

@fribbledom 🥥 Well, the girl in red DOES have a really nice bosom. 🥥

@fribbledom

Yep. Waiting for the collective brain trust to pick a platform.

@fribbledom Problem for me, coming from Twitter: "Where are my existing friends here on Mastodon?"

My existing friends: "I'm on BlueSky."

Me: "Got an invite?"

Discoverability is an issue on Mastodon. I completely understand it was originally created by people who don't want to be discovered *by default*, but hey, could we at least opt-in for discovery, somehow?

@admin

Opt-in to what? Which Twitter features make you more discoverable?

@fribbledom Opt-in to search, or to a directory. On Twitter, when someone searches for my name, they find me. I completely understand this is because Twitter is centralized. Of course. But couldn't there be some search function for the Fediverse, please? With opt-in and immediate deletion upon request?
