A lie can go halfway round the world while the truth has a paywall.
@matthew_d_green
The New York Times is here to remind you that sometimes the lie also has a paywall.
@dymaxion @matthew_d_green Exactly. More like lies are also behind a paywall.

@dymaxion @matthew_d_green The New York Times's paywall is porous. Not only can you gift an article, but check in with your local public library in the U.S.: they probably have subscriptions free to patrons, both print and online.

I couldn't agree more. Very well put.
@matthew_d_green And then came 12ft.io and Bypass Paywalls extension

This may be a lie, but I couldn't get through the paywall to verify.
Probably true, I'll just go with it.

@tobigehrmann @matthew_d_green Fantastic article. Spot on. Thanks for sharing. I hadn’t seen it

@tobigehrmann @matthew_d_green I never saw that before! It's nearly three years old but appears still very accurate.

This situation fits a tech world axiom: If you don't pay for the product, you *are* the product. The people being lied to are the product for very rich right-wing organizations--and certain people. Do we *really* believe that Musk bought Twitter as a business decision?

@matthew_d_green
Who should pay journalists?
@GreenFire @matthew_d_green that reminds me, before the internet it was common sense that any information you didn't pay for is propaganda
@matthew_d_green Paywalls are why people read Russian propaganda for free
@matthew_d_green Washington Post: "Democracy Dies Behind a Paywall"

@matthew_d_green this needs to be in granite somewhere.

or maybe a chrome plugin that changes the text on every news website paywall to this :D

@matthew_d_green The reporting has one. The truth, maybe can slip around the edges. But neither can be accepted without comparison with other sources.

@matthew_d_green Yes, no one wants to acknowledge the degree to which paywalls have removed the majority of journalism from the web for the vast majority of people.

And then they wonder why disinformation is everywhere.

@matthew_d_green You'd need more than one subscription to access multiple sources. There are so many of them already, I think the next logical step is a kind of subscription package, that includes several news sites, movie and music streaming, science journals, etc. All conveniently bundled with the internet connection by your friendly neighborhood ISP.
@matthew_d_green So true. "Here, let me correct that error with this peer reviewed... oh never mind. Elsevier says it will cost me $20 to unlock it."
@matthew_d_green @holyramenempire Not just with spooky internet disinformation, either. A couple of years ago I discovered that the only way to watch Maddow and MSNBC was by paying $50/mo for cable or YouTube’s cable service. Fox News, however, has always been free. (Not sure if these are still the case.)
@matthew_d_green *because* the truth has a paywall.
@matthew_d_green Have you been trying to download 70-year-old journal articles from JSTOR again?
@matthew_d_green That means that you can buy the version of the truth that you want.
@wyliecoyoteuk @matthew_d_green Artisanal, fair-trade, small-batch truth in conveniently disposable, resealable packaging.
@notALLpixels @matthew_d_green alternative truth, like alternative humour.
