Hey Ontario...

In 2015, 8 years ago & well before the pandemic..
Nearly a billion pounds (1.7B CDN) was given to 11 private healthcare companies to 'help' tackle the backlog of patients waiting for surgery in the UK.
It was the largest deal in NHS history at the time. It didn't work.

Today...“Great swathes of the NHS are now being gobbled up by these 11 private companies, hungry for more profit."
The wait lists remain.

NHS sell-out: Tories sign largest privatisation deal in history worth £780MILLION

The sales to a total of 11 private firms, some with dubious records, are intended to help hospitals tackle the backlog of patients waiting for surgery and tests

@gemelliz selling public HC to a for profit company? Where does the profit come from? Either cost goes up or services are decreased! It really very simple
@gemelliz
Don't forget that several of the private healthcare companies in the UK have declared bankruptcy when it turned out that they couldn't make ENOUGH profit. That speaks for itself and we will see the identical developments in Ontario.
@gemelliz Wake Up Canada … Private Health Costs 💸💸💸

Hey #Ontario..
New data shows for-profit clinics are charging significantly more for surgeries.

1.Cataract surgery costs an average of $800 at a public hospital but almost $1,200 at a for-profit clinic.

2. Hip and knee replacement costs anywhere from $10,000 to $12,000 at a public hospital but as much as $28,000 at a for-profit clinic.

CityNews contacted Sylvia Jones, Ontario’s Minister of Health, for comment but has not received a response.

@gemelliz Anyone that makes money from other people's suffering or illness is a *very bad person*

@BackFromTheDud

Indeed.
The moniker "surgical profiteers" has been bandied about here in Ontario

@gemelliz Ford is just taking care of his retirement plan; enriching his friends with our money, so his friends can enrich him with…our money in the end.
@Jgmeadows geez, how much money does one Family need??
@gemelliz Well, keep contacting her. She has to respond.

"Doug Ford's #Conservative government has simply decided it's bad politics to share bad news...
and once a government realizes that it can just NOT talk about things that make it look bad...
and it certainly seems the #Ontario govt has realized exactly that...
we are in a bad way, friends."

@mattgurney

@gemelliz @mattgurney I don't believe she has a choice. Not responding is dereliction of duty. Given the right levers are pulled, she could be walked off government property if she doesn't do her job. She works for the public. Part of her job is responding to the public.

People need to understand that these politicians don't live in an f-ing castle with a moat around them. Get in their faces. They can't just hide. It's a good thing I live several provinces over.

@gemelliz
🎼"He's Simply UnafFORDable...!"🎶
@gemelliz as an American I am begging everyone in Canada to just look at our healthcare system and do not under any circumstances do anything we do. (UK too. Guys, don't do it. Just don't.)

@nypinta

For the most part in #Ontario, it's a done deal. Our majority #conservative govt was not exactly transparent about the scope of their healthcare privatization scheme during the last election & coupled with an uninterested, exhausted mid-pandemic electorate....here we are. Hopefully, Ontario will have cottoned on by the next election.

@nypinta @gemelliz We're trying to avoid being steered into that. With seven of ten provinces now governed by rightwing parties, though...
@nypinta @gemelliz Sadly, the very people who benefit from predatory systems are usually the ones making the decisions.
@gemelliz
Surprising isn’t it. For profit health care is about making profits for shareholders. The case of Dr Brian Day’s clinics that were rejected by the Supreme Court told us that very clearly. He said it was about choice but he wanted to charge the public system millions.

@LeslieMaggie
And as Canada's largest (and richest) province, #Ontario's health privatization feels like the beginning of the end of #Canada's universal healthcare.
Hospital CEOs, business people & corporate profiteers "who have been put in charge need to be replaced — along with the govts that do their bidding — by representatives for health care workers, communities, & medical professionals committed to the cause of universal, public provision." Slim chance. 🙄

Ontario’s Privatization of Surgery Is a Threat to Canadian Health Care

Ontario premier Doug Ford is outsourcing surgical procedures, handing health care provision over to entities that oppose Medicare. The measure is another step toward the dismantling of public health care in Canada.

@gemelliz I don't understand how anyone, even a hardcore Kool-Aid Ford zealot, could believe otherwise. If it costs $10k in a system that keeps profit out of the equation, then in a system that allows profit, it would logically have to be *at least* $10k+profit. *smh*
@gemelliz Doug Ford pushing for privatized healthcare shows that his first duty is to shareholders not citizens. Shareholders are just another hand in your healthcare pocket.

@Gordarnit

well, public service was never Ford's bag
