$44 billion to run the site like a 7th grader would.
@gruber I’m an idiot for questioning whether that was a real screenshot.
Elon Musk changes CBC’s label to ‘69% government funded’ after broadcaster announces Twitter pause

The broadcaster has disputed the designation, saying its editorial independence is enshrined in law.

thestar.com
@NullNoMore Oh, yeah, I checked right away.
@nickheer -- I still can't quite believe it smdh
@NullNoMore @nickheer @gruber dig a little dealer and you will learn that most media/news in Canada had taken money from the Gov as part of a bailout program including the Toronto Star.
@gruber ruining value one day at a time.
@bertjwregeer @gruber and then you have tesla investors calling for Elon to stop playing with Twitter and focus on tesla 😂
@gruber What an unbearable asshole. I really hope Twitter finally crashes a burns so #SpaceKaren shuts up (at least for a little while).

@CarlosSierraOz @gruber I'm 71% sure he'll use generative AI to fake users and engagements on the platform to attract advertisers and skew political discourse.

Elon Musk reportedly planning to launch AI rival to ChatGPT maker

Tesla and Twitter boss said to be bringing together team, weeks after co-signing letter demanding pause in AI research

The Guardian
@phrees I believe you, Musk has proven time and time again that he’s unethical and a liar. I don’t really understand the cult of Elon beyond the cultural stances he takes, he’s shown to be a shady and unprofessional asshole.
@gruber Please, don't insult 7th graders

@gruber This is insulting for 7th graders. They already know their percentage equations 😅

Of note, CBC/Radio-Canada have paused their Twitter posts: https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/cbc-says-it-is-pausing-its-use-of-twitter-after-government-funded-media-label-applied-1.6359113

CBC says it is 'pausing' its use of Twitter after 'government-funded media' label applied

CBC/Radio-Canada said it is "pausing" its use of Twitter, a day after its main account was labelled "government-funded media" by the social media platform.

CTVNews
@edwing @gruber twitter refused to translate the tweet about it
@mzdt @gruber I don’t know what to think of it. I guess that they (social media site) don't give a thought of their user's experience - or they didn't pay their translation bills.
@edwing @gruber well, there's so much chaos over there, everything has plausible deniability...

@gruber Can you imagine being the engineer tasked to implement this?

::: record scratch :::

You may wonder how I ended up here…

@caseyliss @gruber no sympathy for said engineer. you work for Musk at this point you know exactly what you’ve signed up for.
@herid @caseyliss @gruber I mean if it’s that or you and your family getting deported

@herid @caseyliss @gruber rumor is they're mostly H1Bs now whose visas are tied to working specifically at Twitter. I've read posts that said being fired can mean being deported. Not sure how accurate that is though since I've not done the research.

Of course if you willingly chose to work for Twitter *after* the buyout you really have no excuse.

@caseyliss @gruber I wonder what the breakdown is of employees who are memelords vs “I literally can’t find another job right now”

@kyle @caseyliss @gruber

Twitter employees updating their CVs to say that they worked for MySpace instead of Twitter:

@kinyutaka @kyle @caseyliss @gruber odds that Tom would willingly be a reference for folks trying that 😂
@caseyliss @gruber you bet this stuff is just becoming a list of stupid hard-coded strings somewhere. It’s going to be a nightmare to maintain.
@gruber I just saw this and I had to go check to make sure it was real. It is. And, simply, wow.
@gruber news organizations and journalists with even the slightest ounce of integrity have to leave. He’s a spoiled man child and an asshole. Who would put up with that shit?
@gruber nobody taught him the difference between good attention and bad attention
@gruber And there’s going to be nothing stopping him from saying to NPR or CBC—use it or lose it. You want to pause your account? I’m opening it up to anyone to use and throw a check mark on it. All legitimate media should be dumping that platform.
@gruber Bill & Ted redeemed themselves in the end. I don’t have the same hope for #SpaceKaren.
@gruber @tchambers The perfect case for fixing tax laws and ending the billionaire Federal tax exemption. #TaxTheRich
@gruber Definitely not worth $44B now...
@gruber Tesla is facing growing challenges, SpaceX has a major launch attempt scheduled, and this is how he spends his time.
@gruber Had to check twice that it was real. Crazy.
@gruber and just like that, I deleted the app from my home screen. Being a Canadian, I find that insulting, and I am so glad that I decided not to get a Tesla for my next car

@johnlupien @gruber It's quite amazing he doesn't care (or aware?) that the demographic who care about journalism is a significant chunk of those who are environmentally conscious and will adopt EV early.

Tesla investors are worried about the collateral damage of Musk's Twitter on Tesla and rightfully so. Tesla car sales might still go up in near term because of the first-to-market advantage but long-term impact will be clear.

@nhan @gruber I used to own some fractional shares of Tesla, but when he compared Justin Trudeau to Hitler while some truckers where holding Ottawa citizens hostage in their home, that was it for that « investment »

@gruber One good side of this is it’s going to cost Poilievre and the CPC votes, and they can’t afford to lose any. Canadians, by a wide margin, support the CBC, support maintaining or increasing funding for the CBC, and think it’s important for their Member of Parliament to support the CBC.

@fsinn @gruber Monsters of Suck tour with Bernier when
@gruber And he even stole the idea from one of his acolytes
@jsit @gruber holy f did he just put a label on major news outlet without any solid evidence.
@gruber Does SpaceX's Twitter also have a "government-funded business" label attached to it? 😉
@hisham_hm @gruber Or Tesla, for that matter…
@gruber i've seen plenty of fedi admins like this as well but the difference between them and elon is that the fedi admins are actually funny
CBC Should Start Their Own Mastodon Server | The Tyee

Now’s a great time for our public broadcaster to stop relying on privately owned platforms to reach its audience.

The Tyee

In fact, it's time for #CBC to consider starting an own #Mastodon / #Fediverse instance.

After #Twitter labeled CBC as "Government-funded Media", #CBC and #ICI.Radio-Canada decided to pull out of #Twitter. The only logical consequence would be to create a #Mastodon account or an own instance.

CBC pauses Twitter activity after being labelled 'government-funded media' | CBC News

CBC/Radio-Canada has paused activities on its corporate and news Twitter accounts, after the social media platform put a "government-funded media" label on its @CBC account, in its latest move to stamp public broadcasters with designations.

CBC
@gerald_leppert @Anthony @gruber so ridiculous to suggest "government funded" is bad. We live is a damn democracy! Better we can vote out fools that be beholden to rich fools who hold the purse strings and are responsible to NO ONE!! How are those news channel labelled on Twitter?? They should be labelled "stinking rich, old, white guy funded."

@eharvie I think the problem for CBC is the significant difference between "Publicly-funded media" and "Government-funded media" whereas the latter implies government involvement over editorial content, as found in authoritarian states.

@Anthony @gruber

Government and media account labels on Twitter

Labels on government and media accounts provide additional context. Learn more about the different labels and what they mean.

@gerald_leppert @Anthony @gruber government funded IS publicly funded - in a democracy anyway. In the same way that the Canadian medical system is publicly funded - it's not "government" funded. Schools, arts organizations, universities - publicly funded. Not "government" funded. They would be funded regardless as to which "government" is elected.

@eharvie I agree. It is the definition of Twitter of "government-funded" that is problematic and falsely implies that CBC is not editorially independent.

@Anthony @gruber

@gruber can we agree that dump hole should be called Tshitter?
@gruber @tchambers It’s surprising only if you’ve still avoided the realization that Elon Musk is a pathetic, Nepo-Baby menace, bent on enabling fascist ascendancy in the US to avoid paying taxes on his own government-subsidized businesses.

@gruber

He came onto the world's biggest platform and announced to the world that he is actually kind of an idiot.

@gruber I fail to see the relevance of this label. It’s not a government organization by any stretch.
@gruber the sad thing is he probably paid someone to make that joke up for him.
@mldsmith @gruber see other comments - it was suggested by a fanboy, who I'm sure is now beyond themselves with excitement...
@gruber Leon Skum 🙄. One of the symptoms of a failed state.

@gruber

Twitter is being run precisely as its Saudi investors desire.

The semblance of a capricious and volatile child just provides plausible deniability.
