CBC Should Start Their Own Mastodon Server | The Tyee

Now’s a great time for our public broadcaster to stop relying on privately owned platforms to reach its audience.

The Tyee

In fact, it's time for #CBC to consider starting an own #Mastodon / #Fediverse instance.

After #Twitter labeled CBC as "Government-funded Media", #CBC and #ICI.Radio-Canada decided to pull out of #Twitter. The only logical consequence would be to create a #Mastodon account or an own instance.

CBC pauses Twitter activity after being labelled 'government-funded media' | CBC News

CBC/Radio-Canada has paused activities on its corporate and news Twitter accounts, after the social media platform put a "government-funded media" label on its @CBC account, in its latest move to stamp public broadcasters with designations.

CBC
@gerald_leppert @Anthony @gruber so ridiculous to suggest "government funded" is bad. We live is a damn democracy! Better we can vote out fools that be beholden to rich fools who hold the purse strings and are responsible to NO ONE!! How are those news channel labelled on Twitter?? They should be labelled "stinking rich, old, white guy funded."

@eharvie I think the problem for CBC is the significant difference between "Publicly-funded media" and "Government-funded media" whereas the latter implies government involvement over editorial content, as found in authoritarian states.

Government and media account labels on Twitter

Labels on government and media accounts provide additional context. Learn more about the different labels and what they mean.

@gerald_leppert @Anthony @gruber government funded IS publicly funded - in a democracy anyway. In the same way that the Canadian medical system is publicly funded - it's not "government" funded. Schools, arts organizations, universities - publicly funded. Not "government" funded. They would be funded regardless as to which "government" is elected.

@eharvie I agree. It is the definition of Twitter of "government-funded" that is problematic and falsely implies that CBC is not editorially independent.
