techbros explain that being wrong actually shows how right they were

Arrest in Bob Lee Case Has Upended Tech Narrative of San Francisco

Some influential tech executives said Mr. Lee’s death reflected a city overrun by crime, but few have reversed course since the arrest of a man who knew the victim.

The New York Times
@Popehat loved what you said about local use of the police in the story about the girl's goat hugs to you kenny
@Popehat early voices afflicted by based mind virus
@Popehat "we're not owned, we're not owned..."
@Popehat It's slightly surprising to see a piece refuting these claims in the NYT, because the paper more frequently legitimizes and amplifies such claims.
@rbellinger
Intermittent reinforcement. By occasionally refuting such claims, they are able to more-solidly fix the belief in their 'balance', while still on-balance reinforcing e.g. a 'dirty homeless people' narrative.
@Popehat
@Popehat yeah but they interviewed Jason Calacanis for this, and he is hardly a reputable source, and nothing will change his mind. He's old guard.
@Popehat It's the zombie ontological argument. "I imagined that this happened, and therefore it could have."
@Popehat
I know statistics don't matter, but California has a slightly lower than average murder rate for the US. Mississippi has the highest rate.
The narrative that blue states have more crime is simply a lie.

Stats of the States - Homicide Mortality

@silverhorseman @Popehat A LOT of people who cite California's "high crime rate" do so by using the raw numbers, not statistics. Of *course* there's more crime! There's *more people*!
@RobinBobcat @Popehat
Yes, even more so for New York, which actually is quite safe, by American standards anyway.
@silverhorseman Exactly. It's pure Confirmation Bias too – you never hear about that time someone was walking down the street past a bunch of homeless people and absolutely nothing happened...

@Popehat Techbros being wrong is the only sure thing in the Tech industry. If someone could find a way to monetize their dumb takes it would be a hell of a stable business.

“We’re IPO’ing ‘Not That’ Company. It’s where you review all the emerging hot new trends in tech and finance…and then we help you open a regular savings account so you don’t piss away your money.”

@Popehat they can't be wrong, otherwise universe will collapse.
@Popehat I always thought I should write about a detective who investigates rich people murders like Poirot, discovers the true other rich guy culprits, and then at the parlor scene they discuss the best way to frame someone much poorer and/or a minority instead.
@Popehat Jason Calacanis doesn’t deserve the respect off being labeled a Tech Bro. he has always been a self serving asshole desperate for attention to promote his agenda and his failed businesses. He came to fame declaring that Google was dead 18 years ago. He was only right once in his life, an insider investment. The media owes itself and all of us some due diligence when quoting him. Meanwhile, Mahalo.
@Popehat These guys are repeatedly and manifestly stupid, which they insist proves how uniquely brilliant they are. Tech bros (and their journo fanboy pals) are the biggest oblivious self own buffoons on the planet. Hey, got some crypto SBF sold them? Money in SVB? Bought a company worth $10B for $44B? Yup, geniuses.

@Popehat
#ElonMusk is about as knowledgeable about crime in SF as he is about profit at #Twitter.

For San Franciscans who know what SF was like before tech arrived and turned it into their bedroom, it’s good to see that these emperors have no clothes.

@Popehat someone needs to take the blame for their bad behaviour
@Popehat - I love San Francisco. Lived there a couple years. It is in fact often dirty and there are sections where homeless people can be found. But the people are very nice, the art scene is magnificent, and the food is outstanding. I’d live there in a second if I could afford a place in the non-earthquake section.
@Popehat The real tragedy is people taking political advantage of the tragedy of narcissists being narcissists who tried to take political advantage of a tragedy of a senseless murder.
@Popehat To reduce crime in San Francisco, police need to increase their enforcement of a pending local law that keeps tech bros from handling kitchen knives.
@Popehat no no they're right, we need a crackdown, ban all techbros from the city limits
@Popehat I vaguely knew crazybob as the friend of a friend and someone I'd followed online from blogs to Google+ to Twitter (and, back in the day, as one hell of a java programmer). I'm annoyed that the techbros used his death as a bad take writing prompt.
@Popehat “Jason Calacanis, a tech investor and podcaster, tweeted a video of Kevin Benedicto, a San Francisco police commissioner, in which the official cautioned against falling into a “preconceived narrative" about a “horrifying act of violence.””
(Well that’s pleasantly surprising to see a little level-headedness coming from Calacanis, who pledged his allegiance to Musk by saying “You have my sword!”)
@Popehat “THESE ARE THE LUNATICS RUNNING SAN FRANCISCO,” Mr. Calacanis wrote with the video. “EVIL INCOMPETENT FOOLS & GRIFTERS WHO ACCOMPLISH NOTHING EXCEPT ENABLING RAMPANT VIOLENCE.” (I stand corrected)
