@Popehat It's slightly surprising to see a piece refuting these claims in the NYT, because the paper more frequently legitimizes and amplifies such claims.

Intermittent reinforcement. By occasionally refuting such claims, they are able to more-solidly fix the belief in their 'balance', while still on-balance reinforcing e.g. a 'dirty homeless people' narrative.
