Crow's claim about buying it for a museum can't be squared with Thomas's mother still living in it after the purchase, the improvements made to the home, nor with Thomas breaking the law to keep it secret.

Harlan Crow Bought Property from Clarence Thomas. The Justice Didn’t Disclose the Deal.

The transaction is the first known instance of money flowing from Crow to the Supreme Court justice. The sale netted the GOP megadonor two vacant lots and the house where Thomas’ mother was living.

@maxkennerly @ProPublica every historic site /museum must include a [checks notes] new carport.
@maxkennerly @ProPublica the sad fact is that Thomas is a crook. He's been on the take for 20+ years from that guy.
@maxkennerly @ProPublica "It belongs in a museum", a.k.a. The "Indiana Jones defense".

@maxkennerly @ProPublica
On the one hand, the Justice Thomas/Harlan Crow scandal is a bottomless wedding cake of graft, endlessly rising, each tier larger than the last, out of a lake of corruption-flavored fondant, captivating each observer with the question of how much more of this thing there could possibly BE.

But on the other hand, he should have been impeached before the little plastic Crow-and-Thomas figurines even cleared the surface. How long will we continue to stare before acting?

@DougWar40k @maxkennerly @ProPublica "out of a lake of corruption flavored fondant"
@maxkennerly @ProPublica The illicit $20k/yr deal leading to Justice Abe Fortas resigning in 1969 would be $163k/yr in today's money. Seems Thomas has already bested that. https://www.politico.com/story/2008/05/abe-fortas-resigns-from-supreme-court-may-15-1969-010346
Abe Fortas resigns from Supreme Court May 15, 1969

On this day in 1969, Abe Fortas, denying he had done anything wrong, resigned from the Supreme Court to return to private law practice.

@maxkennerly @ProPublica This really just gives me a whole new appreciation for this Alito quote.
@maxkennerly @ProPublica Now I have this vision of Crow claiming it was purchased as a museum dedicated to the life and career of Thomas, and yes, Thomas's mother was still living in it, but that was b/c she was one of the displays
@maxkennerly @ProPublica perhaps the honorable judge felt the law does not apply to him

@LordKonnen @maxkennerly @ProPublica

the always relevant Wilhoit's law:

“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

@maxkennerly @ProPublica What line is crossed by acting as an illegitimate institution, acting without integrity, and stacking the court with right wing ideologues whose sole objective is to obliterate half a century of precedents with will o’ the wisp reasoning and selective history to fit the nation into their religious orthodoxy?

@maxkennerly @ProPublica OK so when does Clarence Thomas face any consequences whatsoever?

(Kidding, I know there are no consequences)

@maxkennerly @ProPublica Plus development and sale of developed lots...

@maxkennerly @ProPublica

It's amazing the kinds of discoveries to be made when journalists "Follow the Money" with the Supreme Court.

Now do Kavanagh, Alito, Roberts, Gorsuch, & Barrett.

Undoubtedly, there's more public corruption to be found.

@maxkennerly @ProPublica The real question might be why didn't #ClarenceThomas do the improvements on a house that his Mother already owned? Was he not able to finance such improvements to "improve the house (neighborhood) himself? Was he in financial trouble and could not finance such a project? Did we have a #SCOTUS justice in financial difficulties? What bank would not lend him, even $600k (ballparking it) ?
@maxkennerly @ProPublica Brazen lying for the cause will probably square it just fine with the relevant audience.

@maxkennerly @ProPublica

He and Ginny had been paying the property taxes on this place until they sold it to him. Do they pay rent because they don't pay the taxes now. Seems odd they wouldn't think that someone taking over your bills isn't a directly reportable new income stream.

@maxkennerly @ProPublica

Besides broadcasting to the world that Clarence Thomas is a shit son. Did he put a roof on his moms house? Newp. Did he list it as a rental property w/ no income (even after he sold it)? Yep.

@maxkennerly @ProPublica
“Crow told ProPublica that his gifts to Thomas were “no different from the hospitality we have extended to our many other dear friends.””
So Thomas isn’t the only judge he’s bought?
