No. No no no no no no no. This is the worst idea I've ever seen in my life.

"church owned"
"public access" (so not public)

And let me guess, the books on science and anatomy will be in private men's only club libraries?

Why do these people want to live in the 1890s??

@futurebird "Why do these people want to live in the 1890s??"

Hate. Sheer hate which they have nursed for generations.

@futurebird Rows of approved bibles and "Left Behind" books. No Qurans or Buddhist texts. Some dogeared copies of The Turner Diaries.
@tanepiper @futurebird Oh, I'm sure they can find the funds for lots of new hard cover printings of The Turner Diaries.
@tanepiper @futurebird
No books on evolution or climate change science either. Basically a print version of Conservapedia

@futurebird
Bingo:
They get to pick whom in the public gets to access their libraries.

Meanwhile they engineer the death by starvation of truly public libraries.

@futurebird
Why are they trying to destroy public libraries in the US?
To paraphrase Brother Mouzone from The Wire:
“You know what the most dangerous thing in America is, right?
A person with a library card.”
@frasca @futurebird To a degree that’s been supplanted by access to the Internet. Another thing they try to stop from being available to everyone. Their answer to that is a flood of miss information to make accessed information digitally problematic.
@Pineywoozle @futurebird Agree!
A well-curated library has a signal-to-noise ratio that is several magnitudes larger than the internet.
And libraries come with librarians!
Librarians are cool.
@frasca @futurebird lol I worked in a library all thru college and my best friend since childhood became a librarian. I couldn’t agree more “Librarians are cool” 🥰😉👍 #Librarians #Books
@Pineywoozle
Yes, they are. To paraphrase Pratchett: Uuuuk! @frasca @futurebird
@frasca @futurebird I’m still functionally incapable of not giving a helpful answer to a question. The adorable collie with a melon helmet on in the post in this link will attest to the effect of the librarian’s virus (Note, not my dog, not my helmet…Mines much larger😉) https://masto.ai/@Pineywoozle/109371013380331259 #Librarians #Books #Virus #Dogs #Humor

Attached: 1 image I am functionally incapable of not giving a helpful answer to a question. I believe this is due to being infected w/ the #Librarians #Virus when I worked at the #science library in college. There was no vaccine at the time. The virus eventually takes over to such a degree that even when asked how to judge the ripeness of a melon by complete strangers a demonstration on the technique & auditory assessment of thumping is inevitable... I’m not melancholy, I’ve accepted my fate.😜 #Dogs #Humor ish

@Pineywoozle
Alas the lawsuit against Internet Archive.
@frasca @futurebird
@frankboon @Pineywoozle @futurebird The same players going after The Internet Archive are also going after public library's ebook lending.
@futurebird look at this guy. He looks like he would LOVE to live in the 1890s!
@Emilyy @futurebird There were suffragettes and other progressive moments there. It would still be too woke.
@futurebird I feel like we did this and it was a disaster and we lost centuries of art and science
@futurebird I know the answer to this question, but HAVE NONE OF THEM READ UMBERTO ECO'S THE NAME OF THE ROSE? We know how this story ends.
@futurebird Ok, Who left the bag of idiots open?
@futurebird If the fear is creating grooming centers, maybe this is not really...
@futurebird ok welllll we all know that when people have been sexually abused and tormented by an institution, it's been the Church doing the abusing. priests are the OG groomers. these people really hate kids.
@futurebird They've only got one book they care about and they don't even read that. Why would they need a library?
@futurebird well that's a nightmarish vision

@futurebird

The Republicans are rebuilding the 1890's because their donors live in another Gilded Age.

Monopolies. Pollution. Pandemics. Abusive labor practices. Disenfranchisement for immigrants, POC, and women. Bigotry. Homelessness. Mass death events.

The kind of income inequality that leads to world wars.

@futurebird Becase they could physically beat (and maybe kill) anyone who talked back to them in the 1890s.

@futurebird

I remember when the the publisher, Penguin Books, of the classic "Lady Chatterley's Lover" by DH Lawrence, was taken to court for obscenity. The case was decided in favour of Penguin Books which was crucial step in liberalising the country’s cultural landscape, encouraging frank public discussion of sexual behaviour that meant sex was no longer a taboo in art and entertainment. It also shifted views on major human rights issues including the legalisation of homosexuality and abortion, the abolition of the death penalty and divorce reform.

It is widely believed that the real outrage was the idea that a titled woman of the upper classes could possibly fall for a lowly working class gamekeeper and have a torrid sexual relationship with him! Outrageous at the time!

Seems like the USA is going backwards.

@futurebird
'Liberal Grooming Centres' - AKA places where >genuine< information about people and places, past and present is always available.
@futurebird It's like they took the book Fahrenheit 541 and used is as a manual. How can they possibly see this as being better? They are either lying or they are dumb (probably both).
@futurebird I worked at public libraries for a long time because of the access to information that they allow. Even though I no longer work at a library, I will fight jerks like this guy to the death to keep public libraries PUBLIC (meaning NO church involvement).
@futurebird I absolutely hate this proposal but somehow it annoys me even more that this guy is not really going to do one damn thing to foster libraries in churches...other than try to erode trust in public libraries
@futurebird
This is going to get someone killed.
@futurebird things were good for them then?
@futurebird The 1890s are far to modern for them. They want to go back to the stone age, except they take Christ back to before Christ.
@futurebird Republicans want a Christian theocracy. Understanding this explains everything they do.
@futurebird OK 1st of all, why is this guy pretending like he spends any time in a public library.
@futurebird @kimschulz Unification of church and state? Thought that was against the Bill of Rights.
@futurebird just thought I'd take a moment to remind ppl that *actual* grooming is done by trusted adults with authority - teachers or clergy for example! An environment of secrecy and repression is necessary for pedophiles to succeed. The great pedophilia scandals of our time have been at churches not drag clubs. Gaslighting! #grooming #homophobia #pedophilia
@futurebird i’d like to destroy this thing (libraries), but I don’t want you to know that that’s what I’m doing so I’m going to throw up a smokescreen and say that we’re saving decent God-fearing America’s access to knowledge…
@futurebird that’s literally what happened in Europe in the 1930s I think it was in Belgium I can’t remember
@futurebird Galileo Galilei would beg to disagree. Took him over 500 years to be pardoned for heresy.
@futurebird Power. That’s it. They want power to hurt the people they hate - and they hate anyone who opposes their power.
@futurebird In the free market of ideas, churches are welcome to compete. But not supplant...
@futurebird 1890? People were more enlightened. He wants to bring us back to the 13th Century.
@futurebird and no access for women, trans, "antifa" and, clearly, non christians. And the list could go on forever.
@futurebird What is wrong with these people?
@futurebird if it’s church owned it’s definitely not public.
@futurebird They want to live in the 1890s because that's what they mean when they say "MAGA."

@futurebird He could go live in Saudi Arabia today if he wants theocratic fascism.

Probably better that way anyhow. Christians are famous for burning Libraries. The Aztec, Inca, the library of Alexandria.

@futurebird hum…just what type of books will be in this library that you are promoting?
@futurebird This guy is a certifiable lunatic.
@futurebird Ironic considering where a lot of the money to build the libraries came from in the first place. A #1 Grade AAA Capitalist of the Robber Baron era. Andrew Carnegie.
@futurebird Pinhead politician. Probably never read a book in his whole life. Or he doesn’t understand what a library function is? And no, we should not ever give money to any church. Let them fail and close. The rich are losing control. Less and less people are going to their ungodly churches. Say no to welfare churches! It’s funny how they can cut Medicaid? And then want to give money to worthless churches! GOP is doomed! 😂
