Should I keep posting on here?
It’s hard to know whether folks are still using this network! Would love to hear your thoughts on how to improve

Obviously the people have spoken. I’ll have some big news about my coverage of #Ukraine soon.

I’ll make sure to post regularly on Mastodon and keep you all in the loop!

Point taken that I need to follow more people! Who should I follow that is really active here if I’m interested in #nationalsecurity #ukraine #politics #intelligence #Europe #china #taiwan ?

Me, getting this outburst of positive energy on Mastodon that I haven’t seen in a long time due to mainly using Twitter:

Oh so this is where all the friendly people went!

@timkmak It's much nicer here or anywhere else compared to Twitter. Musk has really screwed up that place.
@timkmak great to have you here. Looking forward to seeing more of your posts about Ukraine.
Here it only matters who you follow, no aggressive algorithms 👍
@timkmak I primarily use Mastodon and Spoutible now, and try to keep Twitter use to a minimum. I use Post.News a little, but not as much as I did a few months ago. I know you would be welcome and have positive interactions on all three of them!
@timkmak Welcome to the Fediverse, here's a bit more energy ⚡
@timkmak but at what cost, Tim? This can be a horrifying place for a troll. People simply ignore our irritating replies, block us, or respond politely (which cannot feed us). Most of us have already been banished by power-drunk server administrators, and the few of us who remain are barely getting by with no engagement.
@timkmak I’m sure, if you ask nicely, someone can say mean things to you. Every once in a while. And they will put it under a content warning.
@Elbaserman @timkmak You win the internet for me today. Thank you so much for the LOL.
@timkmak it’s a bit less shouty and obvious that people are listening/reading here but it’s a nice place to be. I just caught onto you and your coverage of Ukraine and I’m a new follower.
@timkmak Love that you're here, Tim, even if it means a duplication of efforts to get your content out.
@timkmak Oh my gosh! Hi, Tim! 👋🏼 I am so glad to see you over here! I loved following you on Twitter, your writing is excellent. I don’t visit Twitter (I quit a few months ago) but I can affirm Mastodon is so much better. 1) We are mostly real people, and 2) yes, we are actually nice - thoughtful at least. Welcome!!
@timkmak Dude, I couldn't with Twitter anymore. Actually, no. It was more like a dysfunctional relationship. I see me on there less and less until one day...I quietly delete my account
@timkmak you can start following the hashtags :)
@alx @timkmak what I came to say. I started with hashtags I liked and then found people who interested me from there 👍

@alx @timkmak YES! It's so cool to see people I don't follow show up in my feed because of an interesting hashtag.

#videogames and #games are also great sources for new games to try.

Only wish you could put hashtags in a list!

@pixelpusher220 @alx @timkmak In the latest mastodon versions you can most certainly put hashtags in a list.
@zbecker @alx @timkmak interesting any idea when/version it was added?
@pixelpusher220 @alx @timkmak around a month or two ago. I run my own instance so I read the changelogs when I update.
@timkmak Mastodon doesn't have full text search (or a directory since we are a federation, not a site), but you can enter hashtags, such as you show, in the search box and find out who is using those tags.
@bosquebill @timkmak But you can make use of tootfinder.ch and make your posts searchable.
@timkmak you can search known people, too, like Marc Elias, also hashtag searches helps you connect.
@timkmak you can follow those hashtags straight up to start!

@timkmak I like to follow hashtags, and then I can see some people to follow or see updates even if I don't follow someone. I only have a few people and a bot in my Ukraine list so far, but it helps me to check that too.

Anne Applebaum
@anneapplebaum posts here occasionally

Euan MacDonald
@Euan_MacDonald was posting regularly, but hasn't posted lately. Maybe cross-posting became more difficult?

I also just started following uanews Bot
@uanews

@timkmak
FOAF (friend of a friend), works pretty well, follow someone with a set of the interests you're interested in and they're likely to boost posts and individuals that have their own Nexus of contacts, etc.
@timkmak the official account for the European Commission is here: @[email protected]
@timkmak check out stigmastodon.com or fedi.directory!
@timkmak I suggest following @w7voa for current events news. He’s a fellow journalist.
@timkmak I also found viewing my local server feed helped me find both content and new people to follow in the initial stages of learning Mastodon. Since you are on journa.host you should obviously find content there that will be relevant. However, you are the only UKR based journalist I have seen on here yet so you might be alone for now.
@timkmak Yes, please post here more often, so we don't have to check Twitter. If you use hashtags, more people will see your posts too.
@timkmak Thank you! Made a Journalists list just to make sure I don't miss your posts! 😄
@timkmak Awesome. We promise not to call you state media!
@misc the lack of a bullying and capricious overlord does seem increasingly attractive….
@timkmak we need more journalists here! Surprised npr doesn't have their own instance.

@timkmak Yes.

It helps to use hashtags. We can follow hashtags here, so we are more likely to see your toots, if you are using popular hashtags.

@timkmak I definitely am still using it. Daily! Would love to continue to see your posts, since I’m no longer on the hellsite.

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@timkmak
If you follow very few then your consumption may be small.
@timkmak "Build it and they will come." If you are not ready to abandon the other place, simply cross-post here. We are a community of curious folks always looking for more information about our world.
