"If you are a subscriber to either Tweetbot or Twitterrific, I beseech you to decline these prorated refunds. It’s a couple of bucks for you, but in the aggregate, this amounts to an existential sum of *already booked revenue* for these two companies, both exemplars of the indie iOS and Mac community.

"Reinstall the app if you’ve already deleted it. Tap that ‘I Don’t Need a Refund’ button and feel good about it. We have a month. Spread the word.”

Tweetbot and Twitterrific Face the Cliff

There is something noble about two longtime rivals — competitors, yes, but with nothing but deep respect and camaraderie for each other — facing this terrible cliff together, with dignity and grace, considering their users first, as ever.

@marcoarment @gruber I’ve done this! I had deleted the app for Ivory, but redownloaded to avoid a refund.

@marcoarment @gruber @tapbots A few days ago I cancelled my yearly subscription. I assume that still lets Tapbots keep the money, I just won't be charged again in May. I hope. My intent was for them to keep the year subscription. Full on with Ivory now.

Also, part way through Mac Break Weekly. Nice to hear you on there. Hopefully it's not another 10 years :)

@chrisleboe @marcoarment @gruber @tapbots that was my assumption as well but it seems this is NOT the case. You need to follow these steps or you will get a refund automatically. To achieve your goal you need to tap the button (as I just did). Thanks to everyone who is sounding this alarm; it is not obvious or intuitive that this is needed.
@xtoph @marcoarment @gruber @tapbots
Weird, the update just showed up now. I thought I was losing my mind.
@chrisleboe @marcoarment @gruber @tapbots it doesn’t apparently. Need to do the app button thing
@chrisleboe @marcoarment @gruber @tapbots You still need to download the app and tap the button, otherwise you will get the refund from January to May.
@chrisleboe @marcoarment @tapbots No: if you cancelled, you should reinstall and tap “I don’t need a refund” — otherwise you’ll get one.
@marcoarment @gruber I just did that as soon as I saw Gruber’s post: re-downloaded, declined the refund, deleted the app
@marcoarment @gruber I just assumed when I deleted the app what seems like ages ago now, that that was the default behavior. Just re-downloaded the app to hit the ‘Don’t Need a Refund".

@marcoarment Just done this. I’ve been happily using @ivory since it’s wide(ish) release and very very happy to not only pay for this new app, but also not be compensated for TweetBot’s demise owing to DoofusHead’s idiocy. Very very happy with TapBots work and attention to detail.

★★★★★ would sign up again and again.

@marcoarment @gruber thanks for the heads up guys. Just reinstalled and refused the discount. I had no idea.
@marcoarment @gruber is this something where Apple is going to give me a refund I didn’t ask for and don’t want?
@mattstocum @marcoarment @gruber Yes, only most of the refund money will be coming out of the pockets of the app companies and only a fraction will be paid by Apple itself.
@garland @marcoarment @gruber that’s the exact reason I don’t want a refund, and was happy to pay for Ivory as soon as it was released. Oh well, redownloaded Tweetbot and opted out.
@marcoarment @gruber @leo declined the refund! Thank you for sharing this. I had already deleted Tweetbot so had no idea. Happy to support these fine folks.
@2DSteve @marcoarment @gruber @leo same here. Thanks for letting us know. I deleted Tweetbot too so I wasn’t aware.
@marcoarment @gruber and the companies behind those apps will help you out next time you need some cash, right?
@marcoarment @gruber Thanks for pointing out that you need to reinstall. That was easy. ❤️ @tapbots and @Iconfactory
@marcoarment @gruber Thanks for the heads up! Had already deleted Tweetbot so I had no idea; declining the refund is the least I can do to support a company that brought me my most-used piece of software this past decade.

@marcoarment @gruber

Does this work if I’m still using the TestFlight of @ivory ? I would like to transfer my Talbots subscription but I don’t think it did anything?

@marcoarment @gruber better yet - subscribe to ivory ;-)

@marcoarment @gruber I didn’t think I deleted the app but maybe didn’t update it … went to the App Store and searched and hit OPEN and found the “don’t need a refund” button.

This was after trying to find this in the subscription section of the App Store where it said my payment method was refused.

@marcoarment @gruber Thanks for the heads up. Happy to refuse the refund and pay the subscription for @ivory as @tapbots have given me a lot over the years in the bird site. Anyone who follows me please make a point of refusing the refunds for these developers
@marcoarment @gruber let’s also add subscribing to Ivory or purchasing another Iconfactory app to the call to action too
I opted for the remaining time to be given in their new app, Ivory. I’d not ask them for a refund. Wouldn’t feel right about it. But getting a paid beta? I’m down.

@marcoarment @gruber

Ive done that.
Thank you for the hint!

@marcoarment @gruber thanks for pointing this out. I downloaded, declined the refund and deleted again. I was completely unaware.
@marcoarment @gruber Opening Tweetbot for me didn't prompt the "I don't need a refund" screen, instead showing the same reauthenticate screen. Manually updating the Tweetbot app solved this.
@marcoarment @gruber there is nothing "indy" about the iOS. period. get over it, get a pine phone. Yes, they still sell the one for $149, but you have to look for it, because they're featuring a new one for people who like to spend lots of money, like Apple always did.

@marcoarment @gruber I feel this is a really gracious way for them to handle this, particularly @tapbots and their pivot to Ivory, which I leapt on.

The macrumors forum on this has devolved into a silly and curiously tribal argument about 'charity' and 'fairness’ - split along M*sk party lines perhaps?…

@marcoarment @gruber Thanks for the pull out about re-installing. I didn’t realize I needed to take action for them to keep the subscription.
…or, you can apply your remaining subscription towards Ivory, Tapbot’s Mastodon client. (As mentioned in the full post)
@marcoarment @gruber I was a Tweetbot subscriber and change to Ivory.
@marcoarment Thank you, just done that. Also. Really enjoyed you on Macbreak Weekly.
