As we speak, a discernible backlash is beginning to take shape. It's the leading edge of an angry reaction to the right wing, uber-Christian power grab.
It's very hard to see history from inside history. But we are living through a moment of stunning historical significance. Nothing should be seen from a normal perspective because nothing about right now is even remotely normal (sorry, American news media!).
Christo-fascism has been present in America for a long, long time.
Donald Trump gave it full permission to sit at a table it does not belong at. But then, Trump shouldn't have been at the table either. But for Russia, Trump would NEVER have been POTUS. Is it a coincidence that American Christo-fascists see bonds with so-white-he's-practically-translucent Putin but not with other Americans?
Trump's day in the barrel has come. When the indictments start dropping, they might not ever stop. We'll get plenty of bravado from the bloated orange traitor, but he won't help himself one bit. He won't help any other Republicans either. In fact, Trump's inability to shut up - or to take responsibility - will begin to bite more and more Republicans in the ass.
And they're going to have to defend themselves legally.
Once the first rat abandons the SS Trump, there'll be a headlong rush for the gunwales. The rats will learn quickly: it's really, really, REALLY expensive defending yourself against this level of federal charge. And there's only so much legal defense cash to go around. Same goes for GoFundMe dollars. Then the rats will have to settle for the best deals they can cut - with all the good deals already long gone.
These bastards all know the depth and extent of Republican complicity. Hell, the GOP's leadership knew as early as June 25, 2016 that "Putin pays Trump". That was a month before they nominated him. It's in the Washington Post (May 17, 2017). Kevin McCarthy exits a meeting about Russia undermining Ukraine's fragile new democracy and enters a meeting of GOP leaders. The FIRST thing McCarthy said upon entering: "There's two people I think Putin pays - Rohrbacher and Trump - swear to God!". No one in the room (filled with GOP leaders) disagreed with McCarthy or even challenged him.
They knew it was true - "Putin pays Trump". Meaning: Putin controls Trump. Putin owns Trump. And that means a "President Trump" poses a grave national security risk.
The GOP knew when Trump said "Russia, if you're listening...!" that Russia WAS listening.
One of the Grand Jurors in Georgia said the other day that what's coming about Trump and his corruption would be "massive". No doubt. And that massive corruption was all geared toward keeping Trump in the White House where he (thinks) he can't be prosecuted for his crimes.
And, please, let's stop pretending that Trump might not know what he did was criminal. Every bit of the reality we live in screams "he knows exactly what he's doing!!!"
This is one of those moments when we need to make absolutely certain that the swing in the other direction - the backlash - goes all the way to where it must.
The goal: level the playing field here in America so that, finally, everyone gets the same shot as everyone else. We can't aim for that - we'll never get there that way. We need to swing for the fences. It's not like the things we want in our dream world are terrible things.
A world where the most possible people experience the most possible happiness might be hard to pull off but that doesn't excuse us from trying to get there.
Let's start with the first real, concrete steps in bringing Donald Trump to the justice he so richly deserves.
