We're living through the Who Cares Era, where completely disposable things are shoddily produced for people to mostly ignore, while the government stomps its uncaring boot on our necks. But there's an easy way to fight back: Care.

I wrote about it: https://dansinker.com/posts/2025-05-23-who-cares/

Jefferson Griffin Concedes Defeat in N.C. Supreme Court Race

Three counts showed that the incumbent, a Democrat, won the State Supreme Court election last fall. But Judge Jefferson Griffin tried for months to reverse his loss through the courts.

As a farmer, the best advice I can give you right now for dealing with the horrors of the world is to start a garden. Anything you can grow yourself right now is going to be more valuable than gold in the very near future.

Tear up your yard, get some pots on your patio, turn the empty downtown lot into a community garden or CSA, get some plant lights in your house, build a pvc hydroponic system, throw some herbs in the window, however you can do it, do it.

If there had been a DOGE 50-60 years ago, it would’ve killed ARPANET. Waste of money.

I started a ton of Hibiscus moscheutos (swamp rose-mallow) seeds today from pods I harvested last fall in downtown Durham. The pods are so beautiful that I hated to tear them apart.

In my region, rose-mallow is the 7th most important perennial and supports 28 species of moths and butterflies.

Per the article☝️, the population of American birds has declined by 30% since the 1970s. To help, you must support the bugs that the birds need to reproduce. But only 14% of #NativePlants generate 90% of the yummy caterpillars that drive food webs!

So are you planting these?

At the link provided, you can pull up a list of what *you* need to plant in your ecoregion. Scroll down and click on your list.

Really, asking "what should replace Facebook" is putting things the wrong way around.

A more interesting way to ask the question is, "what did Facebook replace."

People used to build their own websites. People used to have blogs. People used USENET which was truly distributed and un-censorable.

Facebook and Google took the open internet and open standards and monetized and made everything crappy. Enough of that. Nothing should replace Facebook, it's done, stick a fork in it.

If AOC primaries Schumer I may have to move back to my birth state so I can vote for her.

Rather than plant into plug trays and suffer with non-ideal germination rates, this year I germinated in seed trays before pricking out the seedlings. It worked much better.

I moved half my seedlings into plug trays, and half into Aerogardens with seed starters. The results were impressive. The purple coneflowers were 2-3x bigger in hydro, the big bluestems were more like 3-5x larger.

Now to see if going back into dirt shocks the advantage out of the hydro plants or not.
