Not sure who needs to hear this today, but remember, your local public library benefits from being used! Usage statistics are how librarians argue for funding! By using this shared service more, you are making it BETTER for everyone else!

It's the glory of the commons, not the tragedy of the commons. Go to the library!!!

I now feel less guilty about having so many interlibrary loan books shipped back and forth across California just for me
@joemo if you live in California did you know that you can get library cards from any California library, as long as you can show proof that you live in California? I have 14 California library card. It makes it easier to find the books I want on Libby app when they are available instead of waitlisting.
@blackcatranch @joemo Intriguing -- how do you do it? My kids keep running out of downloads on their local library cards. 😥
@quinnanya @joemo I live in California - I have 14 California library cards and most of them have limits of 5-15 books for up to 22 days each. I try not to borrow more than I can read at one time and return early if I finish early
@blackcatranch @joemo Poking around on various library websites, it looks like some of them make you come in in-person to get a full service card and the virtual cards are only available for immediate residents? Do you know of any libraries that will let you just apply online?
@quinnanya @joemo for all California libraries, they require that you show up in person to show your state issued identification and proof of address for the first time and then you can renew by phone after three years or whenever the card expires. I drive around the state a lot, so I just stop and get library cards wherever I am.
@blackcatranch @joemo Good to know, thank you! I think we've got a new project on our hands!

@joannarifkin I'm legitimately worried about the lack of infectious countermeasures in basically all public & private spaces near me.

We really need to ensure public spaces remain hospitable for all.

@lispi314 @joannarifkin My local library still has a pick up service where they leave it in the vestibule for you. And I bet if you called the library and explained your situation, they would find someone to bring you your books outside. That’s what librarian heroes do

@lispi314 @joannarifkin

Agreed. I would love to hang at my local library for a few hours knitting frogs or studying Japanese. But I'm not hanging inside somewhere that I'm the only masked person, that has poor ventilation.

@lispi314 @joannarifkin I've noticed almost zero protection even in medical spaces over the past couple of years. Except the library, where every member of staff was masked.
@lispi314 @joannarifkin if you use their digital collection that still counts as usage.

@lispi314 @joannarifkin While it's true that public spaces need to be safe spaces, libraries have services you don't need to go into their buildings to use. I'm sure those count as well.

There's a branch of my local library specifically for people who have disabilities and can't go in person. They mail materials out.
Check out your library's website and see how they can make your life better!

@joannarifkin I love my library! But they have increasingly turned toward automation over personal interaction, a move that has a negative effect on our community here in Central Oregon. Why talk to a real human when you can order your books online and check the books out yourself at a giant glowing terminal? Ugh.
@magdalen @joannarifkin where I am in Maine they still stamp the books.
@joannarifkin I went today, dropped of a whole bunch of books, and checked out another bunch.
@joannarifkin believe me, I'm doing my part by both using the library system and voting for their bond levies. Our library system is amazing.
@joannarifkin Absolutely, even if you check out a book, did not read it (because, life happens), and you bring it back, it is still all good. We get the stats from you checking it out, and you can always try later, or get something different.

@joannarifkin I love the library. I'm watching a DVD that I checked out earlier this week.

Does checking out e-books help? Because I've been checking out a lot of those! I got into that habit at the start of the pandemic when my local library was closed.

@ahimsa_pdx @joannarifkin

yes, checking out ebooks help, sometimes ebooks licensing is more expensive to libraries than you realize so it helps to let them know people understand how to use them, check them out, & value them

@joannarifkin libraries are amazing. They feel like such a beacon of what government should be. Could be my cynicism but it feels like it's almost abnormal for them to exist

@joannarifkin This is so important. If you really want a book don't order it from Amazon, order it from a library, they'll happily get a copy.

Then it can be read by countless people for years. You can read it whenever you want.

You don't have to own something to enjoy it.

#Libraries #Books

@sentient_water @joannarifkin

In my experience you are lucky to have a library that will happily order a book they don't have. But it is definitely worth a try!

@SnerkRabbledauber @joannarifkin I don't know what country you're in but that's not been my experience.

@sentient_water @SnerkRabbledauber @joannarifkin

Yep, I volunteered at our local library for over 10 years. Anytime anyone wanted a book we didn't have it was immediately ordered and added to the collection.

Also, my husband reads ebooks one after another. We get those from the library too. I can't imagine what it would have cost us for all the books he's read.

@sentient_water @joannarifkin the funny part is the reason Amazon took off is because of used books and of Media mail. Which is a discounted rate to ship books via USPS - meant for libraries to use. Basically Amazon & eBay exist because of a federal subsidy.
@alexisdyslexic @joannarifkin Really? That's fascinating. Another example of socialism for the rich & capitalism for the poor I guess. I'd be interested in any sources you have for this. Tho I don't doubt they did.
@sentient_water @joannarifkin I don't have a source for this. I worked at a used book store in the aughts and they had been selling on Amazon & eBay for years at that point, we sent everything via media mail. When I first hear of ebay & Amazon they were bassically just used for mailing CD's & books. On Wikipedia says in 1997 Amazon went public & was primary know for selling music (CD's) and videos (VHS's). Both were 'Media Mail'. The OG streaming service, lol.
@alexisdyslexic @joannarifkin Gotcha. Thanks for explaining as best you can. Anyway let's all order a book for our library.

@joannarifkin

And it's FREE!!

And you can request that they order books you may want to read but not necessarily want to (or cannot afford to) buy!!

(I find that the more I use the library, the more attention they pay to my purchase suggestions)

Did I say it's FREE?? 👍

@joannarifkin Yes, the glory of the commons! Those usage statistics, whether from visitors or online checkout, or ebook access, or other metrics are super, super important.
@joannarifkin
For many in the UK their 'local' library isn't local any more-the Tories caused the local one to close by cutting local authority funding

@joannarifkin

Adding to the chorus of people who agree with you, and also currently reside in places that are pretending there is no pandemic. :/

@joannarifkin yes our local library is awesome and even rents power tools
@danmayer @joannarifkin Ours started doing that years ago, and it's great!
@joannarifkin i hope my library benefits from me being so chronically ill i have to renew books like 10 times each before being able to finally finish them 😂

@joannarifkin wanted to give an insider perspective on this - 100% correct. never apologize for checking out so many books, asking lots of questions at reference, requesting interlibrary loans/purchases, needing help using our eResources or stopping by in the last few minutes, we count all those things, include them in monthly/annual reports, and most of the time* we enjoy helping.

*everybody has that one patron that bugs them but it probably isn't you

@joannarifkin
I request so many things from interlibrary loan that I'm told they've dedicated an employee to my requests!
@joannarifkin I don't suppose you know offhand if digital lending services like Libby contribute to this?
@DavidBlue They do! Apparently it's really helpful because the licenses are expensive so those statistics are particularly valuable!
@AnneTheWriter1 @joannarifkin Joe and I go library-hopping the way we used to go bar-hopping. A couple of Berkeley branches, and Albany (next town over, California). When we're farm-sitting east of Lodi we hit the Friends of the Library stores in Stockton and Sacramento. Gold mines!
We have a dozen or so Little Free Libraries in walking distance, too. And too many books, chronically. Time to circulate some of them, I guess.
@AnneTheWriter1 @joannarifkin I have loved the Peanuts comic strip since I was a teenager ( a long time ago 😊) it’s full of truth about the human condition, hope that doesn’t sound too “wishy washy “ Oh good grief Charlie Brown !

@CosmicBlaze @joannarifkin

#Peanuts #ComicStrips are far from wishy-washy. They can be very philosophically deep and influential.

@AnneTheWriter1 @joannarifkin Too True, the world 🌎 is a better place when we work together 😊

@AnneTheWriter1 @joannarifkin

You're right, #libraries are awesome!

But images without #ImageDescription aren't #inclusive: People using a #ScreenReader hear just one frustrating word: "image"

@khzimmer2 @joannarifkin
Thanks! I've often been forgetting to do that when posting images, and I apparently can't add it in during editing. I've heard that editing ability is supposed to change soon, but it doesn't seem to have changed yet.😕

@AnneTheWriter1 @joannarifkin

It depends on the tool you use for writing your posts.

The Webbrowser interface allows to (a) add an image description during writing the post and also (b) to add it later, when editing your post after you have sent it.

I do not know how the different apps handle both cases but I assume at least the first case should work in up-to-date versions of most apps.

@AnneTheWriter1 @joannarifkin More important than any driving licence.

#alttext though?

@book @joannarifkin

These days, I always do. But way back when I first posted that, I didn't always include it. And on my current Mastodon app, I can't edit AltText after posting. My apologies.

@joannarifkin I need to go to my library!
@joannarifkin
I love that libraries now tend to have great online collections.
@joannarifkin Use it virtually, too. Through BorrowBox and Libby Apps, my library card gives me access to e-books and audio books for free.
@joannarifkin Absolutely! And our modern #library offers much more than books. There are e-books, a streaming service, online news and magazines, and even #free e-learning courses. Check it out!
@joannarifkin Libraries are awesome! There are so few free places to take children in the winter. We go at least once a week to check out and bring back a bunch of books, and sometimes they give the kids a craft or STEM project to try at home.
