@daniel

Hi Daniel, that's a few questions, which begs that question, "Why the heck would I use a mastodon account?"

One reason, certainly isn't because I can currently ask or answer questions, including tags and addresses I'm CC 'ing in less than 500 characters - because we can't, generally.

So you're really asking if you can carry the feature sets already supported by most #Fediverse platforms to a resource hog that turns out to be good for little more than short bursts of text and pasting links to 3rd party resources located somewhere else, here's what might help...

In mastodon, there are some links that will imbed images and some that won't. It's willy nilly, and depends how you do it. Every platform handles this a little differently, so settling on one that meets your needs on a platform by platform comparison is prudent.

Those such as #Soapbox, #Calckey, #Friendica, and others actually do support much of what you're asking.

Currently, yes you have to do what others already do in the #silo_space when it comes to linking different types of media platforms. i.e., #Faceplant, #Twatter, #InstaSPAM, #YouTube, #Reddit...

Analogs are those #Fediverse platforms already mentioned above and others such as #Pixelfed, #FunkWhale, #PeerTube, #Lemmy, #OwnCast, #Castopod, etc.

There are currently a few ways that people are achieving what you're pondering.

#ZOT has nomadic profiles and in #Hubzilla you can enable the #ActivityPub addon. But your nomadic profile doesn't include anything related to your other #ActivityPub based Fediverse accounts.

Since you inferred merely adding additional hosts for each of those Fediverse platform analogs under your gultsch.social domain, you might want to consider adding #OIDC support to your Fediverse servers. This can provide you with #SSO capabilities. Some organizations currently do that.

And there's also what #Minds is doing, although they still haven't managed to finish integrating ActivityPub into their platform. They've layered #Nostr into Minds. A few Fediverse platforms are experimenting with doing that very same thing too.

The "ActivityPub"way is, of course, what you mentioned - find the video and and comment or boost it from another account, but many platforms like SoapBox and Friendica will generally render the image or video linked. Calckey will render previews of at least 3 links per post.

So it's not really that much different, when posting links, to how the deprecated, privacy disrespecting, legacy monolithic silo platforms do it, but you also have the opportunities to follow, comment, boost, and #Quote_Post other people's (and your own) content from across the Fediverse.

Kinda kewl, but in most cases, unless you layer something like Nostr or OIDC on top of your infrastructure, there really isn't a way currently to use a single user identity enabling you traverse all of your accounts across the platforms and share, boost, etc.

I hope that helps!

@tallship I am wondering if there is an instance that meets all the following criteria, qoto.org has most of these features but not the first three.

1) Runs a fairly recent version of the Mastodon software that allows editing toots after you have sent them.

2) The ability to specify hashtags or keywords that will automatically hide a toot. There are certain subjects I just don't care about and would like to eliminate them from the toot stream.

3) The ability to automatically hide toots that are not in a message you speak, OR automatically translate those toots for you. Right now I am manually muting anyone who toots in something other than English but that means that if they sometimes toot in English I won't see it.

4) Does not limit toots to 500 characters. To me the larger the better. qoto.org allows 65535 character toots which is ridiculously large but it does mean that no one ever has to break up their thoughts into multiple toots (I hate trying to follow a thought that takes a dozen short toots to fully explain). I would say 2000 characters is about the absolute minimum but really I'd like to see 5000 or more as the limit.

5) Allows you to view all the hashtags you subscribe to in a list, and delete them from that list. quoto.org has that but the other thing I would like, which they don't have, is the ability to see a daily or weekly post count for each hashtag in the list. Basically I am trying to find a way to reduce the amount of toots coming out of this firehose.

6) Has a quote-toot ability (which qoto.org has) or the ability to do a reply with a quote from the toot you are replying to. Another thing I hate is seeing a toot that is obviously a reply to another toot but you have no idea what they are replying to.

7 ) Displays all inages without cutting off the top or bottom of the image. qoto.org does this but I also wish there was a way to reduce the size of images to like 25% of the column width so it would be easier to scroll through the toot stream.

@Lunatech

With respect to the #Fedilab #Android app, it supports most all of those functions (excellent translation and hashtag filtering) constrained, of course, by the character and feature limits of the server platform.

For web access, I use the Vivaldi browser, which has an excellent translate feature.

But the closest your going to get to ask if those features would probably be either #Calckey (the UI takes since getting used to, but it's rich with features and has adjustable character count limits), or https://Soapbox.Pub which has a wonderful rich display of graphics, configurable character count limits (default is 3000 IIRC), has federated events and realtime chat, and soon will have groups too.

Both #Soapbox and Calckey have many other features as well. Including quote-posts and Markdown support. Calckey also includes previews if at least the first three links in your post.

For mastodon, however? I would look at the#Hometown or maybe #Glitch-Soc forks - they're both way ahead of anything stock mastodon offers. Qoto might be running glitch, but I'm not sure.

Obo.sh has a huge character count limit, so I'll often author there, at write.as, or on #Mitra, but OBO is still just mastodon and if you're looking to self-host I would recommend a non-mastodon platform because it really is a huge resource hog compared to others.

Friendica is a whole 'nother world altogether but doesn't limit your writing, supports BBCode, Markdown, and a plethora off other features.

I would actually recommend you try out Soapbox and you can get a hosting plan at https://Btrf.ly and then audio create a Calckey account for yourself at https://Calckey.Cloud - the admin there is s friend of mine and is very helpful.

I also have a #Matrix room where we cover pretty much all things #Fediverse and everyone is welcome. Several major Fediverse platform devs and users alike participate there:

https://matrix.to/#/#fediverse-city:matrix.org

But in the end, the tl;dr of it all is that I too am still searching, waiting, and going for that perfect blend of feature sets. 🙂

No doubt, the new #Wildebeest hosted Fediverse server offering by #Cloudflare at $5 per month is going to rattle some foundations and they have the resources to deploy just about any features you can imagine within a week or so, but... It's Cloudflare. At least it's $3 less than a blue ☑️ at Twitter and it is your own (performant) Fediverse server that you can invite your friends and family to join (I think I might have just thrown up in my mouth a little bit).

I hope that helps!

@tallship Thanks for the suggestions. Sorry if you got the wrong idea, I was not looking to host an instance myself, as I do not have the skills or resources to do that. I was just looking for an already existing instance that I might want to join, that had the features I mentioned. Actually qoto.org would be great if only you could edit toots, but you can't and I do tend to make mistakes while I'm writing that I don't catch until I see the posted toot.

@Lunatech

Yes me too lol. The edit function is not only nice, but rather to be expected and taken for granted as being a feature in today's #Fediverse.

Unlike the cray cray terms of the "joinmastodon" crowd, uFol actual has pretty sane and sensible rules to observe.

Here's the thing. QOTO is mastodon based. And right now so you have is "delete and repost" capabilities - that means that if you do, then any subsequent thread that develops from that post, boosts, quot-posts, likes, etc., Well be orphaned.

But this was corrected with the introduction of the "edit" feature in mastodon v4.0.0.

QOTO is a good, stable operation, and as soon as they upgrade to 4.0.x you'll have everything you personally require.

I recommend you contact Jeffrey Freeman directly @freemo and ask him when he sees this update occurring. It's been a could of months now so I can't imagine it will be much longer 🙂

Best wishes,

@tallship

Yes that is a feature we intend to add in the next release. Hopefully we will have that in the near future.

Side note, anyone who knows ruby and wants to help I am paying for help to get updated out quicker. So paid assistance is always welcome if anyone knows anyone it would help speed up the timeline.
