I cannot keep this to myself. There is a website (radio.garden) where you can listen to radio stations all over the world for free. No log in. No email address. Nothing.

When the site loads, you are looking at the globe. Slide the little white circle over the green dots (each green dot is a radio station) until you find one you like.

I have been listening to this station in the Netherlands and it absolutely slaps.

EDIT: Replies tell me that this doesn't function in the UK without a VPN.

@Pepsilora is it NPO Radio 2? The Top 2000 songs as voted for by the public? It's terrific. :)
@cliffchapman The site lists it as "omroep horst a/d maas from Horst, Netherlands"
@Pepsilora
Hard a look, it's a very small local station, run by volunteers
@cliffchapman
@edwinek @Pepsilora oh marvellous! Sorry, Top 2000 is a big thing here so was natural assumption, but that's also cool.
@edwinek @Pepsilora @cliffchapman with a name Top 2000 at least you know it won’t be Heavy Rotation ad nauseum
@Pepsilora @cliffchapman In this municipality "Horst aan de Maas" there is a village called "America". This band is from the village of America: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowwen_H%C3%A8ze

@Pepsilora @cliffchapman this is hilarious. You're actually listening to some small-town local radio station...

Thnx for sharing the website, definately going to spend some hours browsing the world of radio stations!!

@Pepsilora @cliffchapman That area of the country is known for heavy regional dialect, so even most people from the Netherlands don't understand what they're saying!

@Pepsilora @cliffchapman first thing I did was to see if Cuba and then North Korea have stations online. They do. 🧐 haha

@cliffchapman @Pepsilora you can even get pyonyang radio (NoKo Hot100 "playin the hits", lol) on here.

edit 1: need to read up on the "opt-in for graphic" before posting that map.
edit 2: they have music. like big band.

@Pepsilora there’s also an app, which is handy for bookmarking interesting stations
@otterlove @Pepsilora Anyone know now to reach those radio.garden stations from the commandline? It seems to be #Javascript-encumbered. I tried “curl $URL | mpg123 -” & “curl $URL | play -”. Didn’t work. #askFedi
@Pepsilora I've known the site for years ❤️
I've been listening from time to time to Brazilian stations - I love their music.
@BaconAndPie any recommendation?
@tinoeberl @BaconAndPie Listen to WRLT 100.1 FM Lightning 100 from Nashville TN live on Radio Garden: https://radio.garden/listen/lightning-100/oE6EwPLY

@Pepsilora yeah that's a fun thing. You get a cultural vibe from each.
@Pepsilora This is way cool!
I'm learning Danish now, and this will be a big help in ear training.
@Pepsilora Thanks for the pointer. Looking for it now!
@Pepsilora Looks like a very useful tool but only works if you are in the broadcast zone. Have downloaded the link to my mobile phone.
@Palky55 @Pepsilora
don't think it's much to do with where you physically are, it's who's gatekeeping your net service or *saying* where you are; I'm using a [cheaper] UK provider and roaming in PT and it will only give me UK stations. Ditto weather stations default give me London weather : /
@Pepsilora I will need to check this out. Every now & again, the radio station I work for gets emails & even letter mail from people who’ve tuned us in over shortwave.
@Pepsilora
Thank you for sharing!
@Pepsilora I just spent 45 minutes with this and Google Street View exploring the two radio stations in Nuuk, Greenland.
@jeffmoore @Pepsilora Thanks for replying to and sharing this! I love podcasting, & I’m also interested in community radio, but it’s super cool to have a map with radio station links like this!
@wfryer @Pepsilora I’ve observed Neil Diamond getting airtime on 4 separate continents. It’s fascinating.
@jeffmoore @Pepsilora It is super cool! I guess each individual radio station has to do something to add themselves to the streaming menu?
@Pepsilora Underrated website. I like to listen to stations in places we've travelled to. Gives another layer of depth to the experience.
@Pepsilora Its cool, but you have to have a good VPN to keep changing regions.
@Pepsilora Or maybe its just the UK, we are blocked from everything
@Pepsilora Yeah just The UK
@BetsyBeeee @Pepsilora Another Benefit of Brexit.
And a relic of our our DCMS committee, who still enforce 3pm TV watersheds on football games.
Anyway since I wasn't alive when Radio Caroline was on the airwaves floating on a boat off the south Coast. There is always a VPN.
@Popcorn @Pepsilora
Good idea.
@BetsyBeeee @Pepsilora OFFCOM and The DCMS Have banned it due to the lack of revenue from PRS License fees. Which is is odd when the ROW seems to manage to not only survive but thrive, and create great music and content.
@BetsyBeeee @Pepsilora Basically if a Bar, café, Hair salon, was using radio garden, they could claim it was free to air and therefore PRS didn't apply. Ill sort it out. Stick it my inbox.
@Popcorn @Pepsilora Thanks - using a VPN on your advice. Able to use the site now. It's really cool.
@BetsyBeeee @Pepsilora No Probs, when some of us don't have the privilege to be able to travel for economy reasons or others, then exploring other cultures music and content is really really important, especially if you are trying to learn a new language.
@Popcorn @Pepsilora
Very true. For those of us living away from our country of birth, it's also an amazing instant connection with home.
@Popcorn @Pepsilora UK blocks non-UK radio stations for good reasons, but they aren't telling you what these are ... Turkey is the other government that wants to prevent people from listening in on out of state radio! #RadioGarden #WTF See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Garden

@RulesBuster @Pepsilora If You Know what these are please feel free to enlighten, us. Their are some media outlets that need blocking a bit like on the fediverse, but if we cant access a Guatemalan folk radio station for some reason, I would love to know what the good reason is.
@RulesBuster @Pepsilora Probably will some how end up been my fault.
@Popcorn @Pepsilora Here in the Isle of Man (80 miles from Liverpool), we can use radio.garden to listen to all the listed stations, both UK and everywhere else.
@Popcorn @Pepsilora
Wow that stinks the UK can't listen to anything?
@Pepsilora @Popcorn does anyone know why uk listeners are restricted? Does it happen to any other country?
@Popcorn @Pepsilora Yep, one of the reasons I got a VPN. It used to work without it. Teases us with that ‘temporarily’ though …
@Popcorn sorry for digging in, but I have to say this is a cool avatar. Dizzy was the first video game character I came across on the good old Schneider CPC64 with datasette and monochrome screen. I loved it so, thumbs up 👍🏻😁
@Pepsilora This website brings back almost forgotten memories of what we can do with the Internet. I have already spent many hours hopping from obscure radio station to radio station around the globe …. ❤️
@Pepsilora An excellent site. I suggest looking for stations in isolated areas of southern US for some entertaining batshit crazinzess.
@thrashcardiom @Pepsilora Only so much 🦇💩🤪 I can endure. Sometimes I like oldy time Ozark & Appalachian hymns like Farther Along as long as I don’t actually have to attend those churches to hear them.
