Historically, people were only pretending to belong to very well-respected and dominant groups (e.g. clergy, aristocracy) in order to gain some financial or other benefit and nowadays pretending is has no particular direction i.e. there are rich people who pretend they are poor and vice versa, promiscuous people who pretend they are celibate and vice versa
