New: The Jan 6 committee learned some striking information about how social media companies failed to properly address the threats of real-world violence. But members avoided diving deeper for fear of offending Republicans and tech companies, our reporting found. Incredibly important issue for public understanding that was ultimately cast aside

What the Jan. 6 probe found out about social media, but didn’t report

The Jan. 6 committee's 845-page report offered few details of social media's role in the Capitol riot. Transcripts and an unreleased memo shows the committee knew more.

The worst part of magical thinking as it relates to stock markets is believing that the best hope for progress on our greatest challenges — #climate change, racial #injustice and economic #inequality — are corporations and individual investment and consumption choices, rather than political mobilization and collective community action. 😒😔

If you've ever wondered why Democrats can have better facts about policy, but still lose the political argument, I've written about schemas -- a concept from neuroscience and psychology that helps explain why political messaging too often misunderstands how the brain works and relies on facts too much. https://brianklaas.substack.com/p/schemas-and-the-political-brain
Schemas and the Political Brain

Understanding how cognitive shortcuts work when processing new information is crucial to understanding modern politics—and it's a facet of cognition that Republicans manipulate extremely effectively.

Violent Saudi dictator, Bonesaw Mohamed bin Salmon who "invested" 2 billion in Jared Kushner's new "company," also uses Saudi fund to give untold millions to Trump's golf courses.

Trump's shady dealings don't just affect US National Security, but all of the 5 Eyes intelligence alliance (Canada ,Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States).

Are all the top secret documents Trump stole accounted for? Were they photocopied? 5 Eyes have reasons for deep concern.

U.S.: Investigate New Evidence of President Trump’s Business Dealings with MBS

The U.S. Department of Justice and Congress should investigate the disturbing facts and circumstances surrounding payments by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign Public Investment Fund (PIF), via its wholly-owned LIV Golf company, to businesses owned by former President Donald Trump, said Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN).

@kiplet I say again, I will never stop saying: hypocrisy is not a meaningful accusation to the right. That _you_ are bound - by rules, standards, logic, human decency, some sort of fundamental moral consistency, anything at all - and they are not, is their conception of _what power is_, and why they seek it: so they can exercise power, without constraint, and you cannot.

That's the whole point.

Hypocrisy is the virtue-signaling of fascism.

At least 112 million people were occupying the Americas in 1491. By 1560, this had decreased to less than 5 million. A catastrophic loss of over 90% of the hemisphere’s indigenous population.

(for example, noncompetes are banned in California, home to the world's most profitable, most knowledge-intensive firms,, undermining claims that these businesses need noncompetes to survive).

Then, right as SWA was stranding a million Americans, Khan unveiled a rulemaking to ban noncompetes for every American worker, using her Section 5 powers. Khan's rule is retroactive, undoing every existing noncompete as well as banning them into the future.

But only one of those airlines was a US carrier: Frontier, which only accounts for 2% of all US flights. The US monopoly carriers have gone unscathed.

The US carriers are in sore need of regulatory discipline. In 2020 alone, United racked up *10,000* consumer complaints, twice as many as any other carrier. Under Buttigieg, the DOT investigated these airlines and closed *every one* of these complaints without taking *any* action against them.
