If you "Log in with Twitter" to any websites, get ready for that to stop working. Maybe the sites will send money to Musk, but maybe they won't. You need a Plan B, right now.
@dangillmor I can't even remember. Maybe Medium? But that's only if I want to create, which I haven't done there in years.
@dangillmor Anyone who uses one platform to log into multiple services is just begging for trouble. Yes that includes password apps.
@dangillmor 😬 good way to highlight how “login with” ties you in to a platform. Hopefully orgs have the user’s email and can make an alternative auth method available
@dangillmor Does that rely on the API? Or is it just oauth?
@petersterne Good question. But I wouldn't make any assumption about Twitter connections working for any purpose at this point.
@petersterne Seems to me the login function has to -- as some level -- use the API. Again I'm not positive, but I wouldn't even consider relying on it at this point.

@dangillmor @petersterne I stopped updating the bird app on my iPhone last spring & sometime in Nov-Dec it would not work w/o updating. I switched to web access, which used to be fine but is now a good way to see the tech falling apart.

In the last week it keeps logging me out & forcing me to reenter my password. They are changing things.

My usage of the site has dropped off a cliff.

@Cmmcd @dangillmor @petersterne I can imagine for someone with 500k followers, it might be hard to give it up. I only had 150, and deleted my ten year old account without hesitation when Musk bought it. I do miss all the shitty reporters though, and none of my elected officials are on Mastodon, but...oh well.
@dangillmor I hadn’t even considered the open id facet. What a clusterf…k. Leave it to a nepobaby to bring it all crashing down.

@dangillmor I'm not positive this is the right (or only) spot to see where you've used "Log in with Twitter," but it should be at least one place to look: https://twitter.com/settings/connected_apps

Similarly on Google: https://myaccount.google.com/security then under Security scroll to the bottom of the page for a section "Signing in to other sites"

Log in to X / X

Log in to X to see the latest. Join the conversation, follow accounts, see your Home Timeline, and catch up on posts from the people you know.

X (formerly Twitter)
@dangillmor @hacks4pancakes If you log in with Twitter, maybe consider whether you really trust a company that just fired half its workforce for failing to cater to the ridiculous whims of its owner to hold the keys to your online identity.
@dangillmor Ooof, I hope I didn't do that with many things.
@dangillmor Link to more explanation on this?
@dangillmor Huh…I figured this move was a money-grab by Musk. It DIDN’T occur to me that it’s really more akin to a hostage-taking situation for third-party services built on “Log In with Twitter” — they can’t afford NOT to pay up. (Though, frankly, I have no idea how popular that actually is in comparison to other “Log In with X” services.)
@dangillmor As much as I despise musk, and twitter, surely they wouldn't go so far as make that not work?
@loke It would be stupid, yes.
@dangillmor I worry about those that did this to begin with
@dangillmor I feel no pity for people who were willing to collect and sell data to Twitter

@dangillmor
*glances at Yubi Key*

I don't understand what you're saying. 😂

@haruki_zaemon I assume this would be the case for http://www.conceptmaps.io/?
Published Concept Maps - conceptmaps.io

@dangillmor And remember that when you "Log In through *****" you are handing more data about your habits and preferences to *****. Convenience comes has a hidden price for us an benefits those big platforms whether they be Google, Meta, Twitter or whoever. @Fascinatorfun
@dangillmor My overarching plan is to stop signing up for things that I don't truly need, and leave those that have outlived their usefulness.
@dangillmor People actually do that?
@dangillmor I have none of that. All my logins are unique.
@dangillmor
I'm here.
This is it.
We are plan B. 😁
@dangillmor I have never understood why one should log into a website through another site. Why not always go direct?
@Ken15 @dangillmor Convenience. Single Sign On reduces the need for people to create accounts, thus speeding the sign up process and vastly reducing boarding friction.
@theronster Good explanation, Aaron. Thank you.

@dangillmor Though that's true for any "Log in with __" as any of them can restrict or delete at any time, with varying levels of rescuablility in the service you hope to use.

Sad and frustrating that we are still in this mess after oauth and a zillion other id federation standards over more than a decade.

@dangillmor My Plan A has always been not to log into to anything with third party credentials. That's just stupid.

@dangillmor

@leo

Probably worth mentioning this to TWIT audiences.

All to much of a possibility that "Login with Twitter" will fail en-mass or for individual sites 🫤

Phony Stark seems to want to drive Twitter off a cliff for whatever reason.
