My daughter told me today she no longer tidies her room, instead she 'resets' it to tidy each Sunday for the week ahead . She said mentally this helps because tidy sounds such a chore while reset doesn't, and the thought that there's a weekly reset means she doesn't feel bad if the room gets messy in the week, because she'll reset on Sunday!
Anyway I thought it was cute and might be useful for someone
@Tattooed_mummy I've found the same idea very useful too!
@Tattooed_mummy I like this. I've been needing to reset my office for months...
@ElHadjiMurad @Tattooed_mummy I shared this with my wife today, she loved it
@Tattooed_mummy Resetting laundry to clean rn.
@Tattooed_mummy already finding helpful framing and strategies for life. Sounds like she's on a good path in life. Congrats!
@Tattooed_mummy this absolutely is useful! Re-framing things in your mind is incredibly powerful. Personally I’ve got to make use of this more often in my own life.
@Tattooed_mummy I'm very impressed of her, it took me 23 years and living on my own for two of them to come to this realization myself
@Tattooed_mummy that's brilliant. I never thought about it like that.

@Tattooed_mummy

This is super insightful and really helpful. Be sure to tell her that the fediverse says thanks for the lifehack and sends our regards 🙏

@Tattooed_mummy I like that! I have trouble keeping things in my life organized, and scheduling such a Reset would be a way to periodically get things back under control. Usually I do a huge cleanup only after losing something or missing a deadline.
@Tattooed_mummy
Wonderful way of conceptualising it!

@Tattooed_mummy

I do this! Change the sheets, do laundry, wash dishes, clean bathroom.

Psychologically, Sunday is an 'easy' day for me to putter, and I like things fresh for Monday/the new week. ✅

I really like the thought of 'reset' though. 😃

@Tattooed_mummy

In my language / culture you don't tidy up deeply your house once a week. You «do Saturday». «Fer dissabte» is cleaning up and leave the house very neat. I guess your daughte «fa diumenge», «does Sunday».

@Tattooed_mummy honestly that's how I approach washing the dishes--I "reset" the sink and draining board every evening when I make the cats' dinner, by rinsing and putting dishes in the dishwasher, hand-washing the stuff that needs hand-washing, washing the cat bowls that have been soaking for prepping their breakfast in the morning, giving the sink a quick soap-and-water wash, and wiping down the counters. more stuff might accumulate after that, but I don't worry about it--I'll take care of it when I do the reset at catdinnertime!
@Tattooed_mummy that's a really cool way of framing it
@Tattooed_mummy what an awesome way to frame it!
@Tattooed_mummy this is super useful to me as an adult who has a lot of emotional baggage and negative connotations associated with cleaning. Tell her thank you from me!
@Tattooed_mummy your daughter is very wise!
@Tattooed_mummy @sophie My oldest does this in practice, but multiple times a week, as their ADHD goes berserk if their space gets too messy. Phrasing it like this, though, really makes sense!
@Tattooed_mummy Indeed!!! Reset sounds much more convenient!

@Tattooed_mummy

That's an excellent example of mentally reframing an issue.

When housework is framed as "something only women do", that person is set up for their 1st divorce

When chores are framed as "something only menials do", that person faces a rage-filled future where the so-called "menials" refuse to fit the white supremacy narrative

When domestic labor is framed as "unpaid", that person faces a workplace where staff quit after they're asked to "take notes" or "fetch coffee"

@Tattooed_mummy That's great! It's amazing how much our mindset and language around it has an effect.
@Tattooed_mummy I like that idea. An added benefit may be that since she knows she resets on Sundays, she may unconsciously keep the room relatively clean during the week.
@Tattooed_mummy What a creative solution! Good for her!
@Tattooed_mummy Oh, nice! I really like this idea. Thanks for sharing!
@Tattooed_mummy that is really good. I’ll try it on my kids but I know I’m using this for myself
@Tattooed_mummy I like it. Similarly, I find trash day to be cathartic. 👍🏻

@Tattooed_mummy

Once when I was a teen, my father came to my bedroom door, upset by how messy my room was.

“Dad, you just have to think of the floor as… one big shelf!”

@Tattooed_mummy my goodness, certainly a different perspective. Especially if it is something that you don’t like doing…
@Tattooed_mummy I love this. I think my whole house needs a reset though. 🙂
@Tattooed_mummy I like this 👌 I might reset my room once a year 😆 🤣 😂
@Tattooed_mummy love this idea and that she came up with it all on her own #mindful
@Tattooed_mummy tell her she's a natural psychologist with that excellent reframe!
@Tattooed_mummy My Room, My Blue Screen of ☠️
@Tattooed_mummy that is awesome. I may just start thinking of it that way.
@Tattooed_mummy @glennf Your daughter is way more mature than me. I’m > 50.
@Tattooed_mummy I’m 62 and retired and still do my Sunday cleaning ritual to begin the new week refreshed and revitalized. Your daughter is one smart cookie.
@Tattooed_mummy I’m going to borrow her idea! Genius!
@Tattooed_mummy it is! Thank you for sharing!
@Tattooed_mummy
……. Thats what I do every week….with my life
@Tattooed_mummy okay I think this sounds acceptable, now to see if my daughter thinks so too.

@Tattooed_mummy I learned about ‘resetting’ from KC Davis. As someone struggling with depression, her book “How To Keep House While Drowning” was truly helpful and felt so much more compassionate and manageable than other approaches. A short read but recommended!

@Tattooed_mummy this is my mantra too. for me the distinction is that “tidy” is a daunting, arbitrary, judgmental definition whereas “what it looked like a week ago” is a very well defined concept.
@Tattooed_mummy Damn! The idea sounds great, but my #ADHD brain won't let me stay in an untidy room for even a day :(
@Tattooed_mummy @HisLittle_1 sent this on, after carefully cropping where I found it…

@Tattooed_mummy

Your daughter is BRILLIANT! I am totally stealing that (with as much credit as I can give) and sharing that with my neurospicy friends.

@Tattooed_mummy That's a great approach! I've also recently heard about framing chores in terms of cycles and stages of a cycle. She's taking her room to the "Sunday reset" stage in the weekly mess cycle!
