Pet peeve: spinners that wobble.

Speaking of things that have been driving me bananas. This envelope arrived by post sometime in the middle of December. Of all the mail I get, little of it is addressed to THE CHOCK.

I'm instantly curious what's inside.

Huh.

A QR code. And it's big: 5" x 5" (13 cm x 13 cm). And that's all that's in the envelope.

Of course, I scan it.

And that leads to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

Of course, it does.

So now the task becomes: who did this?

I plugged the sender's address into Google and got back an interesting result:

"Public bathroom in San Bernardino, California"

Helpful.

Street View showed someone's front yard. No bathroom in sight.

I continued searching Google and came up empty.

The envelope sat on my desk and has taunted me since then. Until last Friday night, when this toot showed up:

A case of COVID inspired this nagging mystery, and now both Seth and I have recovered.

On a whim, I went back to Google and there's more information now. It now reports "Brenden Luna Distributing" at that address.

Searching for that, and ignoring all the Brendans and Brandons, leads to a seller on Amazon. We're getting close.

The "Luna" on the address is from this seller:

@chockenberry Merry Christmas, Chock. Glad to have brightened your day; you’ve certainly brightened many of mine over the years.

As I tell my kids: be the mysterious phenomenon you want to see in the world. Someone out there will appreciate it.

@TALlama @chockenberry a can of spam in the mail is good too…
@TALlama @chockenberry My eight year old is learning “digital skills” at primary school. The class is all now Rick-rolling each other via Teams links and finds it hilarious. Good to know our digital heritage is being passed on to the next generation.
@chockenberry ok that evangelion Garfield sticker is badass, or an abomination, or both
@chockenberry I can't believe that joke hasn't been outlawed yet. 😋
@chockenberry That is awesome but would be so much better if it didn’t bring you to a YouTube page that had two adds before the video launches. Totally kills the joke

@chockenberry well It's definitely not me 😆

I live in Calgary 🇨🇦

@chockenberry this story has to be a Serial style podcast 😃
@chockenberry My bet it’s one of your closest friends…F’n with you. #wellplayed
@chockenberry I had a feeling thats what it was!!

@chockenberry 🤣

Possibly the best Rick Roll ever.

@evankstone @chockenberry speaking of Rick Rolls: during remote 3rd grade in the pandemic, one of my twins took the other’s chromebook and tried to Rick Roll their teacher, instead, to both their surprise, the teacher shared his video with the entire class
He also hand drew a QR code for that certain video one time, and it worked. I regret teaching them what Rick Rolling is.
@chockenberry This is a good Rickroll, but the all-time best remains the time when Rick Astley did an AMA on Reddit, and somebody successfully Rickrolled HIM. 😂

@chockenberry

Which is cryptic, because that was a very large QR code that can just lead to t.co/elon

@chockenberry why wouldn’t it be Star Trek though?
@chockenberry excellently done 😂
@chockenberry Thanks for your bitcoin contribution…
@chockenberry Perfection. This is what the postal service was destined for.
@chockenberry Honestly, I was hoping it linked to that

@chockenberry

So, why did you scan it?

On what platform?

Connected to internet?

Why did you not just decode by hand? /s

@chockenberry always a red flag when you see "Open in YouTube"
@chockenberry You’ll never let me down.
@chockenberry out of curiosity: that thing is a sticker. Any ideas where you’ll post it?
@TALlama Car maybe? I’ll be showing people the dangers of using their phone while driving 😉
@chockenberry perfect. Even if they can safely scan the code, the real danger lies after the URL resolves and the Bluetooth connection blares to life…
@chockenberry I recognize that URL well enough to know not to follow it
