As Twitter kills third-party apps, new life blooms on Mastodon

Developers who crafted now-defunct apps for Twitter can devote their attention to the network that’s become the primary bird site refuge.

Houston Chronicle

@ivory @[email protected] For those complaining that the story is behind a paywall:

1. If you live in Houston, you should subscribe to the Chronicle to support its excellent local journalism. Period.

2. If you do not, there many ways around paywalls:

Ads, overlays and paywalls, oh my! How to get around the web’s worst annoyances (updated x4)

Over the years, I’m assembled a toolkit of browser extensions and strategies that have made the web tolerable, allowing me to block overly intrusive ads, bust through overlays and scale paywalls.

The Workaround

@dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp Not complaining that there are paywalls, just asking whether the H.Chron lets subscribers or authors share one-time links the way NYTimes and WashPost do.

Apparently not?

@BobStep @dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp Yes the Houston Chronicle has "gift this article" links
@geob42 @BobStep @ivory @[email protected] I have seen those only briefly, as though they are testing it. I don’t currently see it on stories. If you do, can you screenshot it?
@dsilverman Just saw this now, do you still need it?
@geob42 No, I realized that it's hidden if you have an ad blocker turned on. Turned it off, found the gift button.
@geob42 @BobStep @ivory @[email protected] oh, I saw the gift link. They are not there if you use an ad blocker!
@dsilverman @geob42 @ivory @icecubesapp I avoid ad blockers and work around to defeat paywalls. Subscribe to a half dozen publications in hopes of keeping them afloat, especially alternative online only and hyperlocal publications, but also the Times and Post... So I can spread their gift articles around my local Facebook communities, including journalism students... getting some good writing in front of students so they know what is possible.
@BobStep @ivory @[email protected] You mean like gift links? Unfortunately no.
@dsilverman unrelated to the post but I do live in Houston and I’m just wondering if you follow all the nerdy Apple based tech podcasts?
@charlieray I do not.
@dsilverman interesting. Well either way glad we are all here! If you are interested in holiday light shows look me up next season…
@dsilverman Sounds like an interesting column, but there's a paywall.
@icecubesapp @ivory @dsilverman Sounds like an interesting article. Too bad it’s behind a paywall.

The Workaround
@dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp got a non-paywalled link?
@dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp scratch that, I was able to read it on desktop. For some reason I couldn’t while on mobile.

@dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp unfortunately pay-walled link. Here’s an Apple News Link also. https://apple.news/Aioppy5KQRuCLzx0wkcyLkQ
As Twitter kills third-party apps, new life blooms on Mastodon — Houston Chronicle

As Twitter continues its implosion under the chaotic ownership of billionaire Elon Musk, a new social media world order is being born. The killing off of an entire software ecosystem by fiat has given a boost to development elsewhere.

@JustMrLarz @ivory @[email protected] There are many, many ways around paywalls. IYKYK.

Of course, if you are a Houston resident, you SHOULD subscribe to support local journalism. It’s just the right thing to do.

The Workaround
@dsilverman so it’s probably time to add a new icon there!
@nexthopself Agreed. But I'm a mere freelancer, not on staff, I have no sway with Hearst anymore. But I have suggested it.
@dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp like “just one rotten apple”, this is using part of a phrase and ignoring the nearly opposite meaning.
@jason @ivory @[email protected] Maybe. If you read the story, it makes sense (and it's used in context at the end).
@jason @ivory @[email protected] Also: English is a handy language that way!
@dsilverman I’ve switch to using Ice Cubes App and its been more useful and enjoyable than Metatext.I haven’t tried Ivory, don’t feel the need too now.
@Prometheus @dsilverman I’ve been enjoying @icecubesapp too. If they can add Metatext’s mute-by-duration function and OCR for alt-text, it will be my app of choice.
@shawrd773 @dsilverman @icecubesapp I know you can do all sorts of interesting thing with it using chatgpt from your Mac. You can add your request the Github project.🗝️
@dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp Love it! I am loving both Ivory and Ice Cubes (and the mobile web is nice too)
@dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp "more thoughtful conversation and less drama" that's right! More social, less media!
@dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp I only ever hear about iOS apps. Where are the awesome Android ones?

@sasha_strange @dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp Megalodon is my favorite for android. Updates pretty frequently and allows me to view the federated timeline.

Mastodon for Android but it's pink and has more features

@dsilverman @ivory @[email protected] Explosion? So, are we talking apps causing battery overheating here? Nah, just kidding. It is, indeed, exciting.
@dsilverman For those on Android phones I've found that Fedilab https://fedilab.app/ and Tusky https://tusky.app/ are pretty great. The official app is fine, but both Fedilab and Tusky offer better customization and in-app translation.
Fedilab

@dsilverman @ivory @icecubesapp Does Houston Chronicle let you share a link that doesn't get blocked by the paywall?

@dsilverman
I personally block all paywall sites. Especially those, that I have been click baited onto.

Yeah tough for those people who have to earn a living this way. When there is so much excellent free content online.

And I don't want to circumvent paywalls. They are there for a reason.

@dsilverman Time to update that button and text in the last paragraph? :)
@dsilverman
I am looking forward to what you have to say about Android clients. I now use Fedilab, which is much better than the default Mastodon clients but lacks some customization features that I used on Talon for Twitter.

I think it is a warning sign that #ActivityPub is often not even mentioned in such articles.
