#Ivory’s release is amazing news for Mastodon and the fediverse, but there is no shortage of great apps out there or in the making, such as:

- Woolly by @mttvll, the creator of Fenix

- Mammoth by @JPEGuin, the creator of Aviary

- Mastoot by @libei

- Ice Cubes by @dimillian

and many more...

It’s the indie social renaissance! 🙌🏻

They're all great, but don't forget @elk . Even if it's still at alpha stage, it's great and can be a very good replacement for many apps.

@stefano @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian @elk

Yes! I was only thinking about native mobile (iOS) clients, but Elk is my daily driver on desktop (web).

@maffeis reminds me of the early Twitter days when a great new client came out every few weeks. Often building new features and iterating in ideas of the others.
@Fabrini indeed! A good time to remember how many innovations actually came from third party Twitter clients: Twitterrific introduced the term “tweet” and was the first to use bird iconography as we know it, Echofon introduced the mute feature, Tweetbot popularized the drawer UI pattern, Tweetie (@loren) invented pull-to-refresh (!)

@maffeis @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian

A lottttttt less for Android, unfortunately

@blherrou @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian have you tried @Tusky? It popped up a couple times in the replies

@maffeis

And don’t forget the lovely and whimsical @tootapp by @WAHa_06x36 ! We sure are feasting!

@maffeis @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian @vmbrasseur and one of the best parts is that it is nigh-impossible for anyone to ruin these apps in order to serve ads!
@maffeis @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian @gedeonm Ivory is my favorite. My only minor quibble is that in the profile view it shows reposts in a separate tab instead of everything together.
@mikec415 @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian @gedeonm yeah, most clients do that! I’d also like to have an option to show reposts in the same feed
@maffeis am enjoying the Tusky client on Android
@maffeis no love for Android? 😊
@kalpik I’ve just shared some of my favorite apps that I’ve used. I haven’t tried any Android client, but a few people suggested Tusky in the replies
@maffeis yeah, got some good suggestions already, thanks 😁

@maffeis @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian Agree! Love seeing all this great competition/innovation. Brings out the best in these amazing developers. I particularly liked Mastoot and Ice Cubes.
@maffeis get more than one app, support your local indie developer!

@maffeis @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian @paulca

IceCubes is an excellent app. The app icons alone take it up a notch. #icecubes #app #MastodonApps

@maffeis What about Android clients in the works? These all look to be iOS only, unfortunately.
@baralheia I haven’t tried any Android clients, but a few people recommended Tusky in the replies.
@maffeis @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian
So, what is unique or compelling about the #IvoryApp ? I've been using #Tusky (like it), tried #Yutio (like it too). Why the buzz about #IvoryApp?
@HyL @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian I’d say it depends on your taste/needs. The reason of all the buzz is that Tapbots is the developer behind Tweetbot, one of the most prominent third-party Twitter client for iOS, and they have quite a big and loyal user base. I can imagine a lot of people will find out about Mastodon from them, now that the third-party Twitter clients are dead.
@maffeis 🙏🏻. I'm in the Androidverse, so anything ios-oriented is off the radar completely. Helpful to understand the source of the furor!

@maffeis @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian @ommoran
I'm trying #IceCubes now, thanks for the recommendation. I've been dissatisfied by all of the clients I've tried so far.

I tried #Ivory and was immediately put off by the "you have to sign up to favourite, but don't worry, we won't charge you yet". Pass.

Developers should get paid, no question. I should be able to have a short NSA trial first if you're going to charge me. There were strings attached to Ivory.

@advmoto @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian @ommoran I have not used Ivory since it launched officially, and I understand your concerns, but that's due to how the App Store works: there are currently no other ways to offer a free trial outside the subscription process. I don't see how they could have done it differently, to be honest.

Thankfully, you can immediately disable the subscription in the Settings app, and you will not be billed after the free trial time is over.

@maffeis @advmoto @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian

For starters they could have told me how the app would be limited rather than making that limiting "discoverable"....

@maffeis @mttvll @JPEGuin @libei @dimillian

I have to admit that, after a few months I am still stumbling around the #fediverse the experience is archipelagan: I arrive at an island only to recognise that I have been here before but came from a different direction.
