I think it's important to follow a few people where you never have any idea what the fuck they're talking about but it seems interesting
@prehensile Misskey won't let me follow myself...
@prehensile I so want this to be a subtoot about me.
@prehensile Doubtless explains half my followers.
@prehensile do you mean online? Because I keep doing this IRL and it gets me in a lot of trouble.
@ThetaSigma ya know? that's fair :P

@prehensile I follow some coder/ tech types who post about coding/ tech things that might as well just be saying, "And you don't understand this, you don't know what this is, and here's another thing you have no idea about, what's this? You wouldn't know would you?"

But there's obviously enthusiasm and a deep love of what they're doing so it doesn't really matter.

For example, I just bookmarked a post sharing an article on Bronze Age Islanders and whether they might have fished or not.

It sounds like the most boring thing to read I can imagine, but you know what, the person who posted it thought it was worth reading and so I will in a bit.

My horizons have broadened somewhat since being on here. It's so cool to be exposed to people and their eclectic thoughts, passions, and interests.

@Air_Quotes_Comedian the trick w/ the Nerd Posts, is to know that some of it? it's just not going to be "for" you. the _good_ tech folks, though, will translate the important parts into laymans terms, so you'll see things like "cool new software does a thing!" and "security update, please patch your phones!". (I try to do this, but can't say I'm _good_ at it ;) )
@prehensile Occasionally I also follow unknown threads and messages. It's a learning curve, and good mind exercise.

@prehensile

I seem to always have at least one in real life as well and there is NO end of entertainment 😂

@prehensile I just read the Community posts
@prehensile yeah... I have no idea about programming, but people who talk about it seem interesting.
@prehensile exactly. i best enjoy movies that i don’t understand, i want to think 🤔
@prehensile without doing this I find myself flooded with this every day so why add to my exposure?
@prehensile and that’s why I’m glad @SwiftOnSecurity moved over here at the same time as me!
@prehensile If you don't understand it, what makes it interesting for you?
@prehensile That’s how I learn anything these days! I don’t think enough people do it.
@prehensile I’ve been doing that a bit as I rebuild after the bonfire that was Twitter collapsed around me.
@prehensile You have my follow, then 🙂
@prehensile I thought everyone did that
@prehensile I wondered why I followed you. 😆
@prehensile This is why I follow everyone on Mastodon.
@prehensile
Not to toot my own horn but I don't think they let us follow ourselves here
@prehensile agreed. It makes for a much richer browsing experience.

@prehensile I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

Followed!

@prehensile ok I’m intrigued - follow request submitted

@prehensile

Warning: side-effects may include unsettling changes in your worldview.

I fully endorse this course of action.

@prehensile ...and thats how i ended up nodding and smiling at a crew of astronomers ;) (turns out they're people, too!)
@prehensile Me, too! Sometimes I love feeling clueless! A stranger in a strange land!
@prehensile honestly, at least half of my feed!
@prehensile yes, yes, a million times yes! I am naturally curious about the world and where I fit in. I strive to understand and have a working knowledge about anything and everything (a tall order, indeed). Social media has brought so many people with different or similar ideas and opinions, hyper-specific careers, habits, hobbies, struggles, kinks, joys, sorrows… lived experiences… into my small world, which feeds my curiosity and makes my world that much bigger.
@prehensile Agree. Though it usually has me looking up definitions & explanations elsewhere for quite some time.
@prehensile I do this with research papers.
I know what Petri nets are, and I have a vague understanding of category theory, but I don't know any homotopy theory, and this paper is interesting in the way of "this could be really amazing IF I UNDERSTOOD IT" https://arxiv.org/pdf/2005.05108.pdf
@prehensile a lot of people tell me I'm that person for them ☺️
ESSAY | Is Sufi poetry the new religion?

Through carefully composed aphorisms, Egyptian poet Yahia Lababidi envisions a universal faith based on love.

@prehensile I follow someone because I like their art. They natively speak and post in German. I don't know German. Thus I'm completely lost. But still dig their art.
@prehensile I’ve decided that that’s the core Mastodon experience
@prehensile It sounds like a good strategy online, but when I do that in person it involves a lot of explanations, frustrating delays, and documentation from the state board of mental health.
@prehensile I feel like that's why my husband married me
@prehensile that’s actually the ppl I unfollow if I ended up following them. I’m here to talk to ppl not stare at them in confusion. It’s why I check profiles when someone follows me to see if I wanna follow them back.
@prehensile
I don't know what you mean but I followed you anyway
@MaQuest
@prehensile Aye sounds braw. Am up for that. Fuck aye here have a follow.
