Afghanistan’s Forest Cover Expands by 35%
The National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) announced that by the end of the Iranian calendar year 1404 (March 2026), Afghanistan’s total forest area had reached 1.6 million hectares, marking a 35% increase compared to the year 1391 (2012–2013).
Forests now cover 2.54% of the country’s total land area, according to the NSIA. These woodlands are primarily located in the provinces of Paktia, Khost, Badakhshan, Badghis, Nangarhar, Herat, and Laghman.
Provincial data places Nuristan in first place with 272,000 hectares of forest, followed by Kunar (253,000 hectares), Badghis (180,000 hectares), Paktia (170,000 hectares), and Khost and Paktika ranking fifth and sixth, respectively.
The NSIA described natural forests as one of Afghanistan’s most vital national assets, emphasizing their significant role in driving economic growth. Since the Islamic Emirate returned to power, authorities have established a special unit dedicated to forest protection and imposed a nationwide ban on deforestation.
